Prospects

Algeria is an extremely capable side and a threat to the more fancied teams in its group. Having made it to South Africa the hard way - via a controversial playoff against neighbor Egypt - this will be a highly motivated group. It may not be able to boast the star names of some of its competitors, but should not to be underestimated. Central defender Antar Yahia is a rock at the back, ably assisted by Glasgow Rangers talented defensive midfielder Madjid Bougherra and flying fullback Nadir Belhadj of Portsmouth. Add Lorient playmaker Yazid Mansouri and striker Karim Ziani of Wolfsburg and you have a side with the kind of balance and experience needed to make an impact at a World Cup. It has a low-key start to the competition against Slovenia, and if it wins it will be a definite contender to make it out of the group.

History

South Africa will be Algeria’s third appearance at a World Cup. It has been unable to qualify past the group stages on all previous occasions, with 1982 seen as its most successful performance after defeating West Germany 2-1 and Chile 3-2 before falling 2-0 to Austria and losing out on goal differential. In its most recent World Cup appearance in 1986, Algeria finished at the bottom of Group D, which consisted of Brazil, Spain and Northern Ireland.

Qualification

Algeria started qualifying well, edging out Senegal and Gambia in the second-round group stage and impressing further in the third-round group stage, topping the pile ahead of Egypt following a controversial playoff game after the sides could not be split on their overall or head-to-head record. The last group game in Cairo spilled into violence and alleged crowd trouble in the playoff that took place in Sudan led to political tension between the countries. But Algeria settled matters on the pitch and staked its claim to a berth in South Africa courtesy of a 1-0 win. Yahia was as impressive as any Algeria player during qualifying, scoring three times - including the crucial goal against Egypt in the playoff.
