The French-born Ghezzal plies his trade in Italy's Serie A with Siena, although the club was relegated this season. The striker scored six goals this past season after he debuted with the Tuscany club with five goals in 2008-09. Ghezzal developed as a youth player at famed French club Olympique Lyon, allowing him to learn the game in the city in which he was born. After failing to make an impact with a club in France, Ghezzal traveled to Italy and played at lower levels before he joined Genoa, which loaned him out to Siena. It was not until 2008 that Ghezzal made the choice to represent Algeria, and he made his first appearance with the Desert Foxes in November of that year. Ghezzal scored twice in World Cup qualifying and appears a lock to start up front for coach Rabah Saadane.
