Back for his third World Cup appearance, Villar is hoping he lasts longer than he did in Germany in 2006. Seven minutes into Paraguay's opening group match against England, he suffered an ankle injury making a clearance and was sidelined the rest of the tournament in favor of Aldo Bobadilla. Villar also served as the backup to Paraguayan goalkeeping legend Jose Luis Chilavert in 2002. Currently with Real Valladolid, Villar was stellar in helping Paraguay qualify for South Africa, playing in 17 of 18 matches - winning 10 - and conceding 12 goals. Villar has made 23 appearances for Valladolid this season and posted four clean sheets, though the team is fighting to avoid relegation in La Liga. Villar started his professional career under legendary Paraguayan goalkeeper Ever Hugo Almedia at Club Sol de America and also played domestically at Club Libertad. In 2004, he moved to Argentina side Newell's Old Boys, which he helped win the Apertura that season while being named Paraguayan Footballer of the Year.
