An adventurous right-back who likes to get forward, Gregory van der Wiel has the potential to become a top class defender. The youngster currently plays for Ajax, breaking into the senior side in 2006 after spending a few years in the youth set up. During recent campaigns he has earned a first team place and continues to improve as he gains more experience. Despite his short international career, van der Wiel was surrounded by controversy after missing a friendly in Australia with concussion. Instead he went to a rap concert and posted a picture of himself on twitter on the night of the match. With this situation dusted over, he is a held in high regard by Bert van Marwijk and his attacking mentality fits the Dutch style of play.
