A budding star, Higuain will make his World Cup debut in South Africa and is part of an embarrassment of offensive riches for Argentina. Capable of playing forward or on the wing, Higuain mixes strength and skill on the ball with the ability to dribble through defenders or shoot from long range. Argentina also benefited from Higuain's decision to play for La Albiceleste instead of France. He was born in Brest, France, while his father Jorge played for Stade Brest. Higuain, though, was developed in Argentina at the renowned youth academy of River Plate. He went on to star for River's senior team and drew the attention of various European teams before Real Madrid purchased him for 13 million Euros. While he was a major purchase for the Spanish giant, Higuain has struggled at times to crack its star-studded lineup. He's solved that issue this season by scoring 26 goals, including a five-game streak March 14-28 during which he totaled eight. Higuain's emergence for Real Madrid has also coincided with some success for Argentina. His first goal for the national team was the winner in a 2-1 victory over Peru in a key World Cup qualifier Oct. 10. He doubled his total by scoring in a 1-0 win over Germany in a friendly March 3.
