Valdivia provides coach Marco Bielsa a luxury, someone off the bench who can replace Matias Fernandez to maintain steady offensive play in the midfield, or someone to play alongside Fernandez or even in a secondary striker role to give Chile an all-out offensive attack when in need for a goal. Valdivia has been with United Arab Emirates side Al Ain since 2008 and is one of the best players in the Emirates league, earning the nickname "El Mago" or "The Magician." A gifted player with the ball at his feet, Valdivia also has the vision to try and succeed with passes few would dare attempt. He also has emerged as a quality taker of free kicks, a skill he has worked on since joining Al Ain. Valdivia made six appearances during World Cup qualifying and scored a goal in Chile's 4-2 win over Colombia in October. He played for Colo-Colo and also was loaned out to Chilean side Universidad de Concepcion, Spanish club Rayo Vallecano and Swiss outfit Servette. Valdivia also played for Brazil's Palmeiras from 2006-08, helping it win the Sao Paulo State Championship in 2008.
