There must have been some bittersweet moments for Kalu Uche, who is going to South Africa after beating out his younger brother and fellow forward Ikechukwu Uche for one of the 23 roster spots for Nigeria. The elder Uche failed to score in nine World Cup qualifiers, but his all-around consistency and ability to play in a reserve striker's role or on the flank made him an attractive pick for coach Lars Lagerback. He also made two appearances as the Super Eagles claimed third place in the African Cup of Nations tournament in January. At the club level, Uche has been with Spanish side Almeria since 2005 and had a career-best nine goals this season to help it remain in La Liga for the 2010-11 season. He also has played in Europe for Polish club Wisla Krakow and French side Bordeaux.
