Minute Commentary
90' Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks for tuning in to our World Cup coverage! Be sure to stay tuned later today for the final quarter-final match between Colombia and England!
90' Sweden not very inspired, will need to improve.
Even though the Swedish were able to win this match, they will definitely not be inspired by their performance on the day and will need to improve if they want to have a chance to defeat the winner of the Colombia-England match that’s coming up later today. They looked devoid of creativity and even though their defending was generally solid, they did allow a lot of cross into their box and their keeper was called upon more than a few times to make crucial saves.
90' Sweden win, Swiss disappointed
After what was a dramatic and confusing finish for this match, Sweden are able to squeeze past Switzerland with a score of 1-0. This match was definitely not a thrilling affair, but Sweden were able to do just enough to make it into the second round of knockout action.
90' Game over! Sweden win!
The game ends after the free kick is taken! Sweden win this one 1-0!
90' No penalty, but red card stands
Lang was also given a red card for his foul, but we’ll see what the ref says after seeing the replays.
90' Lang Explusion?
Lang was also given a red card for his foul, but we’ll see what the ref says after seeing the replays.
90' Penalty looks soft but feasible - VAR checks happening now
Lang is the one who brings down Olsson when he when in one-on-one with the keeper. The penalty seemed like a soft call and the referee is looking at the video replays to decide
90' PENALTY IN THE DYING STAGES!
PENALTY FOR SWEDEN!
90' Seferovic Chance!
GOOD CHANCE! Seferovic is able to make contact with a cross from Rodriguez but the Swedish keeper is wise to the effort and is able to stop it.
87' Swedish change
Another change for Sweden, as Berg comes off for Thelin.
85' Corner Switzerland
Good cross from Rodriguez but no one is at the back post to receive it. It’s cleared behind for a corner.
84' Foul by Embolo
Foul by Embolo at the top of the box, stopping a Swiss attack and giving the ball back to Sweden.
82' Change #2 for Sweden
Second Swedish change comes as Lustig comes off for Krafth.
82' First Swedish Change
Swedish change now, as Forsberg comes off for Olsson.
81' Good cross from Shaqiri
Shaqiri puts in another good cross that is just over the head of Drmic.
80' OFF THE LINE!
SAVED OFF THE LINE! A good header from Embolo is saved off of the line by Forsberg before being cleared away by a Swedish defender. The Swiss are getting closer!
78' Swiss coner
Embolo makes a good move on the left side but his cross is impotent. He’s fortunate enough to win a corner.
73' Second Swiss change
Seferovic also enters for Dzemaili
73' Swiss change
First change of the match as Zuber comes off for Embolo.
71' Swiss Corner
Shot from Shaqiri after the free kick is deflected behind for a corner.
69' Let's hope for more action after the goal!
The goal will surely make this match more of an interesting encounter, as the Swiss will have no choice but to try to attack and respond to the Swedish goal.
69' Shot from Ekdal
Ekdal this time has a good shot from the top of the box, but his effort is just too high.
68' Yellow for Xhaka
Xhaka picks up a yellow card for a foul in the middle of the pitch. The Swiss must be careful not to lose their heads after conceding.
68' Unlucky deflection leads to the goal
Forsberg picks up the ball on the top of the box and is able to beat a defender before taking a shot, which is deflected away by Akanji and blocked straight into the back of the net.
67' THE BREAKTHROUGH IS HERE!
THE FISRT GOAL OF THE MATCH!! SWEDEN LEAD!!!
64' Better from Forsberg
Forsberg has looked much more up to the match in this second half than he did in the first period. He swings in the free kick but his effort hits the wall and is fumbled behind for a goal kick.
63' Foul by Behrami again, good chance for Sweden
Foul on the edge of the box by Behrami as he brings down Forsberg in a dangerous area.
62' Booking for Switzerland
Foul and a yellow card for Behrami for a foul in the middle of the pitch.
60' Another attack comes to nothing
A counter-attack is led by Forsberg, who plays a good ball to the top of the box. The resulting cross however is poor and drifts out for a throw.
57' Back to the slow rhythm of before...
A half that started well has seemed to fall into the same rhythm that the first half had – both teams attacking very slowly and unable to link together any sort of dangerous passes in attacking areas.
51' Corner for Switzerland
Cross by Rodriguez blocked behind for a corner.
51' Better start for this second half
Both teams starting this half more creatively than they did the first half.
50' Nice play from Forsberg
Chance for Sweden! Better from Forsberg as he’s able to beat two players in the middle of the pitch. Eventually a cross is swung in and bounces around in the box for a bit before Toivonen strikes the ball with his left foot – his effort is over the bar.
47' Swedish free kick
Free kick for the Swedish in the middle of the pitch after a foul by Xhaka
46' Second half!
The teams are back on the pitch and we’re underway for the second half!
45' Sweden not doing well to create chances
Sweden have had slightly more defending to do but have actually put together a couple of good attacks in their own right. Mostly coming from crosses and defensive mistakes, their shots have done little to threaten the Swiss goal. They’ll want to get their creative attackers more involved in the game in the second half.
45' Switzerland more dangerous thus far
Switzerland have had slightly more dangerous attacking opportunities than their Scandinavian counterparts, with Shaqiri especially providing danger with his crosses from both sides of the pitch. Drmic was unable to put any threatening efforts on goal from these crosses, but he’ll be hoping that Shaqiri will continue to be a spark and provide him the necessary service.
45' Dull first half, let's hope for more in the second half.
An uninspired first half that had just a few attacks for either side. Both teams will want to go into the second half with more attacking impetus, definitely hoping to link more passes together in attacking areas.
45' Halftime!
The half arrives and the teams go into the dressing rooms level! 0-0!
44' Good Cross from Shaqiri
Another good cross from Shaqiri but no Swiss attackers are able to connect with the ball and it rolls across the face of goal.
42' Best chance for Sweden!
Another good chance!! After the corner, the ball finds all the way to the right side and Forsberg puts in the cross that finds Ekdal all alone at the back post. The midfielder can’t quick decide how to best strike the ball, and his effort sails harmlessly over the bar.
40' Corner for Sweden after a free kick
Free kick for Sweden is taken cheekily with the side-foot of Forsberg, and the ball is deflected behind for a corner.
39' Chance missed for Switzerland!
Best chance of the game so far! Good play on the right side between Zuber and Dzemaili as they link up for a couple of 1-2 passes, with the latter eventually receiving the ball at the top of the box to have a first-time shot. His effort is close but sails just over the top of the bar.
36' Corner for Switzerland
Cross by Rodriguez on the left side is cleared behind for a corner.
34' Xhaka long shot
Long shot from Xhaka is powerful but sails over the bar.
31' Free Kick is impotent
The free kick is swung in by Rodriguez and the ball is not good enough, it goes straight to the keeper at the near post.
31' Yellow for Sweden
First booking of the match will come for Lustig on a foul after giving the ball away to Drmic.
27' Swedish chances!
Good chance for the Swedish! A first cross is blocked and seems to bounce off the hand off of Augustinsson, but the ref allows play to continue. A following cross finds it way all the way to the back post and Berg, who puts his effort on target but Sommer is able to make the save. A third cross is made but offside is called.
25' Switzerland content to cross the ball
For all the creative players that Switzerland have in the middle of the pitch, their main source of attack has been the cross, especially from the Shaqiri on the right side.
24' Swiss counter
A quick counter-attack from Switzerland is led by Drmic, who drops the ball back the Shaqiri. The latter crosses the ball into Zuber, who is able to make good contact with the header but his effort is over the bar.
22' No real attacking threats thus far
The teams have been defending moderately well, but the real lack of opportunities in this match is due to the fact that neither team seems to really know how to break down their opposition once they finally arrive to the final third.
22' Swedish Foul
Foul on Xhaka in the middle of the pitch by Svensson.
19' Referee invisible
Apart from a couple of quick fouls in the first couple of minutes, the referee in this match has not had much to do at all – very few fouls or even offsides in this match.
15' Shaqiri crossing well
Dangerous! Another good cross from Shaqiri is just too high for Drmic, and sails just past the far post.
11' Cross from Shaqiri
A deep cross from Shaqiri is less than a meter too short from finding Dzemaili who makes an excellent run into the box. Olsen picks it up easily.
9' Another chance for Sweden!
Another chance now and the game’s pace is picking up! A poor clearance from Sommer allows the Swedish to attack quickly, and the ball eventually comes to the top of the box where Ekdal tries his luck from range – his shot is also wild though and he’s unable to punish the Swiss keeper for his mistake.
9' Good Swedish Chance!
Good chance for the Swedish! A couple of quick passes in the middle of the pitch and the move culminates with a chip ball that finds Berg one-on-one with the keeper – he lashes at the shot though and it’s well wide.
7' First shot from Zuber
The first shot of the match comes from the Swiss, who are able to find Zuber on the left side. He cuts inside to his right foot and tries to curl the ball to the far post, but his shot is a little too central and the keeper catches it easily.
7' Game starting slow
The game is starting at a moderate pace, as both teams seem to be feeling each other out. No real threats on goal to this point.
1' First cross of the match
A free kick won in the middle of the pitch is swung into the box by Sweden, and the header at the back post is cleared by the Swiss defense.
1' We're off!
Kickoff is here and we're off!
0' Almost underway!
The teams are on the pitch and the match is about to start!
0' Match Facts
Today’s match is being played in Saint Petersburg Stadium, where it’s currently a perfect 18C (64F). Today’s referee will be the Slovenian Damir Skomina. His assistants will be Jure Praprotnik, Robert Vukan, and fourth official Nawaf Shukralla.
0' Swiss keys to the match
Switzerland definitely had a rougher group stage than Sweden, capitalized by their draw against the already-eliminated Costa Rica. They’ll hope that their midfield will be the key to push them past Sweden, and maybe even hoping for a bit of magic from their star players.
0' Swedish keys to the match
The Swedish will want to continue with the goal-scoring ability that they were able to show against Mexico. Granqvist is the clear leader of this team, and he'll want to once again lead his soldiers into battle from defense. Emil Forsberg will definitely look to open his account in this game too, as the three-time Swedish Midfielder of the Year has been held scoreless to this point.
0' Lineups
Here’s how the teams will line up! Sweden (4-4-2): Olsen; Lustig, Lindelof, Granqvist (c), Augustinsson; Claesson, Svensson, Ekdal, Forsberg; Berg, Toivonen. Switzerland (4-2-3-1): Sommer; Lang, Djourou, Akanji, Rodriguez; Behrami (c), Xhaka; Shaqiri, Dzemaili, Zuber; Drmic.
0' Team Records
The Swedish finished at the top of their group after defeating Mexico 3-0 in their final game of Group F. The Swiss, on the other hand, finished second behind Brazil in Group E, after a draw in their final match against Costa Rica. Despite their group standings however, this matchup looks to be a close and enticing one.
0' Welcome!
Hello and welcome to our coverage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup! In today's Round of 16 match, we have our third and final all-Europe matchup, as Sweden take on Switzerland!
