Netherlands vs. Costa Rica
Minute Commentary
120' THE BEST WORST GAME EVER
What a game that was in Salvador. It really did have everything and nothing all at the same time. The scoreline may read 0-0 but the Netherlands were denied time and again by a Costa Rica team who just do not know when they are beaten. They may be heading home but they have endeared themselves to the world with one of the finest underdog performances in a World Cup of all time. A pulsating encounter and a dull one all at the same time, there were shots off the woodwork, penalty shouts gone begging, goalmouth scrambles and howlers galore. What it lacked in quality this game more than made up for in drama and it is the Netherlands who progress but Costa Rica, and in particular Keylor Navas, will be the names on everyone's lips tomorrow. Tim Krul and Van Gaal may well also get a mention, it has to be said.
120' NETHERLANDS WIN 4-3 ON PENALTIES
Tim Krul flies to his left and saves Umana's penalty sending the Oranje into raptures. Costa Rica are devastated as Tim Krul and Cillessen embrace. Incredible stuff.
120' COSTA RICA 3-4 NETHERLANDS
It's all on Michael Umana here. He has to score and doesn't, superb save Krul!
120' COSTA RICA 3-4 NETHERLANDS
Dirk Kuyt makes it four from four for the Dutch.
120' COSTA RICA 3-3 NETHERLANDS
Bolanos walks up wearily. He places the ball down, steps up and scores nervelessly.
120' COSTA RICA 2-3 NETHERLANDS
Wesley Sneijder scores.
120' COSTA RICA 2-2 NETHERLANDS
Giancarlo Gonzalez is up next and scores to Krul's left.
120' COSTA RICA 1-2 NETHERLANDS
Robben steps up and scores with ease.
120' COSTA RICA 1-1 NETHERLANDS
Bryan Ruiz has his penalty saved by Tim Krul!
120' COSTA RICA 1-1 NETHERLANDS
Van Persie goes first for the Dutch and scores confidently.
120' COSTA RICA 1-0 NETHERLANDS
Celso Borges goes first for Costa Rica and scores!
120' KRUL TO BE KIND
Penalties it is then, and never has a player been under so much pressure than Tim Krul here surely. He has saved two of 20 penalties for Newcastle United in his career so must be doing something right in training.
120' SO KRUL FOR CILLESSEN
Tim Krul enters the game for his first minutes at the World Cup in place of Cillessen. His only appearance at the World Cup is about to be in a penalty shootout, and that is a huge call by Van Gaal.
120' SNEIJDER HITS THE BAR
The Netherlands hit the bar! Crazy scenes as Sneijder curls a sumptuous effort towards goal, Navas is beaten and it crashes back off the bar. So so close to a winner with the keeper beaten.
118' URENA SO CLOSE
Huge chance missed by Marco Urena who wriggles free of his marker and has a shot on goal well saved by Cillessen in a hugely promising position. That would have been incredible.
116' COSTA CORNER
The corner comes to nothing however as it is swung well over everybody's heads in the centre and out for a goal kick. That was Costa Rica's first of the game.
115' COSTA RICA CORNER
Christian Bolanos twists and turns, gets a shot in and it's blocked away for a Costa Rica corner. Their fans are going crazy here and they sense a chance.
114' NAVAS SMARTLY OUT AGAIN
Navas races from his line to shut down Jeremain Lens as he bursts clear but the offside flag is up and it wouldn't have counted.
113' KRUL WARMS UP
Tim Krul is down on the touchline warming up. Could he be about to come on for the penalty shooutout?
111' HUNTELAAR BOOKED
Keylor Navas claims a high cross in flamboyant style and picks up a knock courtesy of Huntelaar, who receives a booking. Navas is down receiving treatment but this would appear to be a time wasting exercise.
107' ACOSTA BOOKED
Johnny Acosta and Arjen Robben collide on the edge of the box once more and that looked nasty, but both players find their feet and Acosta picks up a booking for his troubles.
106' 15 MINUTES LEFT
15 minutes left then or it's the lottery of penalties to decide who progresses.
105' HALF TIME IN EXTRA TIME
Still deadlock here then at half time in extra time and the Netherlands are about to bring on Klaas Jan-Huntelaar to join Van Persie in the attack in the hopes of avoiding a penalty shootout.
105' TWO ADDED ON
Two minutes added on here as Sneijder's hopeful cross-field ball towards Robben drifts harmlessly out for a throw.
105' RUIZ MISCONTROLS
Ruiz is almost one on one with Cillessen but miscontrols and that's a decent chance missed for the Costa Ricans.
104' FREE KICK COMES TO NOUGHT
The free-kick is fired straight at the wall however and Costa Rica clear.
104' CONTROVERSIAL FREE KICK
Junior Diaz blocks Robben's shot on the edge of the box and the referee blows for handball, although replays show it hit the defender on the back. Great position here from the Dutch and this will be hugely controversial if Robben finds the net.
101' TWENTY TO GO
Ten minutes of extra time played and it's still 0-0, although the Dutch really should have scored and Costa Rica are flagging somewhat.
99' PENALTY CLAIM WAVED AWAY
Marco Urena hits the deck in the Dutch box under the challenge of Ron Vlaar who remonstrates with the striker as the referee waves away the shouts from the Costa Rica bench. That could have been huge.
98' TEJEDA GOES OFF
Yeltsin Tejeda makes way for Cubero now in Costa Rica's final change. Tejeda covered an awful lot of ground and has run himself into the ground for his side this evening.
96' NAVAS FLAPS AND MISSES
Perhaps suffering from overconfidence, Navas comes for a corner he was never going to get to and the ball is scrambled away eventually. He had to slip up at some point surely and is now down holding his knee and looks in some discomfort.
93' NAVAS AGAIN!
Corner to the Dutch as Kuyt forces the challenge. It's swung in by Robben and Vlaar heads goalwards but once again Navas springs into action and diverts the ball away with another good save.
93' EXTRA TIME UNDERWAY
Another half an hour of this thrilling World Cup gets underway and it really is anyone's game at this point, although the Dutch are in the ascendancy here.
90' 90 MINUTES ARE UP
Incredible stuff here as Costa Rica hold on for a historic draw. How on earth the Dutch failed to score right at the death is beyond me but somehow Costa Rica held firm, thanks in no small part to the superb Navas and a profligate Van Persie. They hardly threatened the Dutch goal but yet again a solid defensive effort keeps their hopes of progress well and truly alive. If they can somehow emerge unscathed from extra time, we have seen their form with penalties and it's anyone's for the taking.
90' COSTA RICA SURVIVE SOMEHOW
How did that stay out?! Unbelievable scenes here as first Van Persie's free-kick is beaten away by Navas. Blind takes the ball down and beats his man, fires in a cross and Van Persie meets it at the back post. An almighty scramble ensues as Van Persie shoots but it's somehow deflected onto the bar and eventually Vlaar runs the ball out of play. Remarkable stuff.
90' DIAZ SO LUCKY
Junior Diaz brings down Robben with a tired challenge on the edge of the box and is extremely fortunate to remain on the field as the referee declines to show him a second yellow.
90' FOUR MINUTES ADDED ON
The Dutch are throwing themselves against the Costa Rica defence who stand strong once again. Four minutes added time is signalled here and it's backs against the wall stuff for Costa Rica now.
90' VAN PERSIE SHOCKER
Robin van Persie misses a howler! He gets himself tangled up at the back post after Sneijder's cross picks him out at the back post but the centre-forward misses the ball completely. A great chance goes begging for the Dutch to win this one once and for all.
88' GAME HEADING FOR EXTRA TIME
Robben does his defensive duty now, nipping in and stealing the ball off a Costa Rican toe. A grandstand finish is looking likely here, although both sides are looking increasingly exhausted.
85' NAVAS YET AGAIN
Navas punches unconvincingly from a Robben free-kick and the ball falls to Van Persie who beats a man and fires a shot goalwards but yet again the Costa Rican keeper repels him. A slightly shaky moment there from Navas but he soon shows his class once more.
83' SNEIJDER HITS THE POST
Sneijder strikes the free-kick beautifully but it cannons back off the upright with Navas beaten. Almost a game winning effort that, there were inches in it and the game has sprung back into life again.
82' FREE KICK NETHERLANDS
Robben goes to ground again and it's right on the corner of the penalty box. Giancarlo Gonzalez picks up a yellow and he can have no complaints, it was a tired challenge and this is a good chance for the Dutch.
81' LENS OFFSIDE
Jeremain Lens heads at goal and is denied by Navas but the flag is up anyway and it wouldn't have counted. Navas with another decent stop though, he has been fantastic here again, although he has been underworked somewhat in this second period.
78' ANOTHER DUTCH CORNER
Yet another corner for the Netherlands is won by Robben and Costa Rica use this opportunity to replace the struggling Gamboa who has failed to recover from that knock he picked up moments ago.
76' SNEIJDER TO VLAAR - HEADS OVER
Wesley Sneijder whips in a superb free-kick and Ron Vlaar meets it with a decent header but can only direct the ball well over the bar. Decent chance that for the Dutch but again they fail to make it count.
73' COSTA RICA THREATEN
Christian Bolanos reaches the left hand side of the Dutch box but he fails to pick out any of his supporting cast and the ball is cleared away. Costa Rica threaten again on the break but can't quite find the final ball and the game is descending into a really nervy encounter.
71' GAMBOA GOES DOWN
Cristian Gamboa is in a heap on the floor after landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge with Daley Blind. No suggestions of foul play there, it looks an innocuous one but he is in pain.
69' VAN PERSIE OFFSIDE AGAIN
More great work from Robben and he almost picks out Van Persie but Costa Rica recover and clear for a corner in the nick of time. Memphis Depay lines up to shoot shortly afterwards but the flag is up against Van Persie for offside.
66' GONZALEZ HEADS OVER
Giancarlo Gonzalez meets the cross at the back post but under pressure from the Dutch defence heads well over.
65' INDI BOOKED
Bruno Martins Indi is the latest to see his name scribbled in the referee's notebook as he commits a clumsy foul and Costa Rica will whip another cross into the box from 40 yards.
62' PENALTY DENIED
Penalty claims for Costa Rica here as Campbell hits the deck under the challenge of Martins Indi but the referee waves them away, and that will be a wake-up call for the Dutch as they have been on top largely in this half.
60' AN HOUR GONE
Junior Diaz opts for the safe option as he nods an innocuous looking cross behind for another Dutch corner but it comes to nothing. An hour gone here and still nobody can take control.
59' DUTCH IN CONTROL
Daley Blind nods a long ball back to Cillessen with consumate ease and Costa Rica are on the back foot a little at this stage, with the Dutch pressing.
56' CORNER NETHERLANDS
Van Persie breaks into the box but Giancarlo Gonzalez slides in and clears for a corner. It's swung towards the back post and Vlaar's header is blocked away.
53' ROBBEN FLIES
Arjen Robben goes flying once again after an agricultural tackle from Michael Umana who enters the referee's notebook. A really clumsy tackle there and Diaz, who was also involved, is lucky to avoid further punishment and the Dutch have a free-kick in a promising area.
49' CAGEY START TO THE HALF
It's a similar start to this half as we saw in the first, with both teams feeling each other out and passes going astray.
48' CILLESSEN STOPS CROSS
Joel Campbell's cross is deflected and almost causes Cillessen a problem but he reaches up and claims it.
46' WE'RE OFF
The second half is underway here and this game is all set to be a potential classic.
45' HALF TIME
Ravshan Irmatov blows his whistle to signal half-time and Costa Rica have done a superb job to keep the score level, with Keylor Navas excelling once again in goal. The Dutch pushed and probed looking for a way through and almost broke the deadlock on several occasions only to be denied by the flying goalkeeper. Costa Rica themselves have crafted several half chances but have been forced to concede possession for most of the first period. Both sides look more dangerous on the break, and it suits the Central American side to sit back and soak up the pressure. The Dutch have a far superior side on paper but Costa Rica are more than in this one. A fascinating game so far.
45' ONE MINUTE ADDED
A couple of nice displays of footwork from first Kuyt and then Van Persie add a bit of spark to what has become a slightly cagey affair in these last few moments before half time. The fourth official signals just one minute of added time.
43' COSTA RICA SOAKING IT UP
Costa Rica are sitting back on the edge of their area in a very disciplined fashion, forcing the Dutch to pass the ball all the way back into their own half. Good stuff from the underdogs here and the Dutch are having to work very hard to find a breakthrough as Navas races off his line to collect Robben's through ball towards Van Persie.
40' GREAT SAVE NAVAS
What a save from Keylor Navas! Brilliant free-kick from Sneijder who loops the ball towards the top corner but the keeper they call the eagle soars to his right to tip it away. Great stuff again from Navas.
38' ROBBEN FOULED DIAZ BOOKED
Robben goes flying after a challenge by Junior Diaz and the Costa Ricans surround the referee as he awards the free-kick. Their complaints fall on deaf ears and Diaz goes into the book.
36' BORGES ROUND THE BACK
Good chance for Costa Rica as another free-kick is fired in towards the back post. The ball is headed back across by Borges but just won't fall for the attackers and is cleared away.
34' ROUTE ONE DUTCH
Jasper Cillessen claims the free-kick with ease and launches the ball down-field towards Robben but the winger fouls his man and relieves the pressure.
33' ANOTHER FREE KICK
Johnny Acosta is brought down by Van Persie and it's another promising position for Costa Rica here.
30' NAVAS SAVES AGAIN
Memphis Depay is denied this time by the legs of the keeper, after Van Persie slips the ball to him on the break. Another good save from the emerging Keylor Navas who has been linked with Atletico Madrid today.
28' FREE KICK CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR
Christian Bolanos swings in a tempting cross from the free-kick but it just curls over the heads of the attacking Costa Ricans and runs out for a goal-kick.
27' SLOPPY FROM INDI
Howls of derision echo around the stadium as Martins Indi is the latest to misplace a pass and he puts his side under pressure. Sneijder fouls Ruiz and Costa Rica have a free-kick in the Dutch half.
26' NETHERLANDS THREATENING
Memphis Depay moves too soon and is flagged offside, rightly but narrowly and Costa Rica have to be careful. Shortly afterwards, Robben crosses towards Van Persie who is also adjudged to be offside, saving his blushes as he fails to connect with the ball.
24' GREAT MOVE
That was the best move of the game from either side so far, with great running from Depay complimented by two superb passes from Kuyt and then Sneijder. Real quality on display from the Dutch there.
23' GOOD CHANCE SAVED BY NAVAS
A superb break from Memphis Depay opens up the Costa Rican defence and the ball is worked out to Dirk Kuyt. The wing-back looks up and picks out Sneijder with a lovely ball, who then feeds Van Persie. The striker's shot is well saved by Navas, Sneijder seizes on the rebound but his follow-up fails to trouble the Costa Rican keeper.
20' GAMBOA AGAIN
Cristian Gamboa is in again after being fed by Bryan Ruiz but his cross is cut out by Ron Vlaar. That was Costa Rica's best move of the game so far and they look far from overwhelmed by the occasion.
19' ROBBEN FRUSTRATED?
There have been a couple of moments of frustration for Arjen Robben here so far, and his exclamations are audible over the crowd as another loose pass drifts past him and into the arms of Keylor Navas.
16' ATMOSPHERE BUILDS
The neutral vote is certainly with the Costa Ricans in Salvador as the noise level ratchets up a notch. The Dutch fans are no slouches however and they are doing their best to make themselves heard.
14' ACOSTA TO THE RESCUE
A key touch from Johnny Acosta to divert the ball out for a throw-in there as Van Persie broke with Depay in support.
13' GOOD WORK GAMBOA
Good work from Cristian Gamboa down the right sees him beat several tackles and pull the ball back into space but none of his teammates are there to meet it and the Dutch clear.
10' ROBBEN ALMOST IN
The corner comes to nought however and the ball is worked back to Cillessen in the Dutch goal. The Oranje stroke the ball around again and look to unleash Robben who is onside in a good position but the chance runs away from him and Costa Rica clear.
9' FIRST CORNER
Robben breaks through several tackles and wins the first corner of the game off the legs of Giancarlo Gonzalez.
8' END TO END MOMENT
Robben is dispossessed and Costa Rica break quickly but the final ball is lacking and the Netherlands regain possession. The game opened up there somewhat there and may indicate the nature of this one once both teams get warmed up.
6' SLOW START
Martins Indi and Ron Vlaar exchange several passes in their own half here and it's far from a blockbuster start as both sides feel their way into the game.
5' FORMATIONS TAKING SHAPE
The formations are becoming more apparent here and it is clear that the Dutch are in a 3-4-3. Costa Rica have packed their defence and it looks roughly like they are taking a defensive approach early here in a 5-4-1 formation.
2' NETHERLANDS BOSS POSSESSION
The Netherlands boss the early possession here but the ball is with Navas now after a hopeful long ball towards Robben misses the target.
1' WE'RE OFF
We're off then in Salvador and there's a cracking game on the cards here. Both teams will attack with gusto and it may all come down to the goalkeepers, who will be undoubtedly busy.
0' LINE-UPS
The line-ups are here, and for the Dutch, it's Cillessen in goal, with a defence made up off Stefan de Vrij, Ron Vlaar, Bruno Martins Indi and Daley Blind. The midfield consists of Georginio Wijnaldum, Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Memphis Depay, who will provide support for Robin van Persie. For Costa Rica, breakout goalkeeping star Keylor Navas starts, with Giancarlo Gonzalez, Junior Diaz, Cristian Gamboa and Michael Umana in defence, alongside Johnny Acosta who replaces the suspended Oscar Duarte. Christian Bolanos, Yeltsin Tejeda and Celso Borges line up behind Joel Campbell.
0' KICK OFF APPROACHING
So three of the four semi-finalists are confirmed. Will it be the Netherlands or Costa Rica who complete the set? Stay with us to find out.
0' VAN GAAL
Louis van Gaal is perceived by many as a rather abrasive character (although his methods have won many admirers over the years, none more so than Manchester United) but his admission that he is relying on a lucky children's bracelet to safeguard his team's progression in this tournament is touching in its honesty and shows a softer side to the Dutchman. Van Gaal received the bracelet from the child of a sponsor in the lead-up to this World Cup and is determined to make good on his vow to wear the wristband all the way to the Maracana on the 13th of July. “I didn't make the bracelet,” he said. “The children from the head of the sponsors at ING Bank made it.” He then demonstrated his trademark confidence by stating “I will always wear it when I'm coach of Holland and that is another three matches, as you know.” At the same press conference Van Gaal was keen to emphasise the key role his more experienced players would perform en route to the next round; “We have four or five older players and the influence of these is quite substantial. Robin van Persie is the captain, the man responsible for the younger ones, along with Robben, Kuyt and Sneijder. That's good and pleasant for the coach to have players who will do everything it takes and look after the younger players. I'm pleased with that.”
0' PINTO WARNS OF ROBBEN DIVING THREAT
After his antics in the round of 16 victory against Mexico, the South American's coach, Manuel Herrera, was heavily critical of Arjen Robben's role in his side's downfall. The Dutch talisman went to ground in theatrical fashion after minimal contact from Rafael Marquez, and later admitted culpability for a similar incident in the first half. Costa Rica boss Jorge Luis Pinto has joined Herrera in criticising the winger and has piled the pressure on the match officials by stating “We are really worried about it and I would like to ask Fifa and the referees to watch Robben closely. I think he is one of the best players in the world but referees have to watch out. I hope tonight's officials are careful.” He added that ensuring Robben entered the referees notebook was the 'logical' thing. Pinto was in defiant mood, and while he admitted that the Dutch attack is “very dangerous,” he was at pains to convey the message that his side will not suffer any nerves before this encounter. “There is no shiver down the spine. I respect them, but we have played against England and Italy, and even Greece are a difficult team, and we are never scared.”
0' COSTA RICAN TACTICS
The main headache for the Costa Ricans at this moment concerns the absence of Oscar Duarte, suspended from this match as a result of his red card last time out. Johnny Acosta and Roy Miller will battle it out to take his place at the heart of defence. Jorge Luis Pinto's men will sit back and soak up pressure before feeding the likes of Joel Campbell and hope to muster an effective counter-attacking threat, as they have done to great effect thus far.
0' DUTCH TACTICS
Louis van Gaal may well be forced into a reshuffle for this tie after seeing his side stumble over the line in the round of 16 clash with Mexico. Defensive midfield stalwart and Manchester United target Nigel de Jong is a confirmed absentee, ruled out of the tournament with a groin injury, while there are doubts over the availabilty of Dirk Kuyt and Paul Verhaegh. Bruno Martins Indi may well be restored to the side, but a continuation of Van Gaal's favoured 3-5-2 seems likely, though he has shown a slightly uncharacteristic willingness to change things up if necessary.
0' NETHERLANDS ON COURSE
By contrast, the Netherlands entered this tournament as, if not one of the favourites, then certainly a team to watch, especially after their second place finish in 2010. A 5-1 demolition of their former conquerors Spain in the first group game raised more than a few eyebrows and they followed that with a swaggering 2-0 victory over the highly fancied Chile. The other two games that have seen them to this point were rather less convincing however, completing the group stage with a nervy 3-2 defeat of Australia, in which they had to come from behind. They then faced Mexico in the round of 16 and found themselves in a similar position, falling a goal behind to a Mexican team that proceeded to park the bus and it took two late goals, one of which was a contentious penalty decision in favour of player of the tournament contender Arjen Robben, to see them through. Before the tournament, they would have relished this draw as an excellent chance to progress to the semis. Costa Rica's eye catching performances have dispelled any such misplaced optimism and the Dutch will have a real fight on their hands if they are to reach the next stage.
0' COSTA RICA SURPRISE MANY
Costa Rica are arguably the biggest surprise package of this tournament, combining speed and power on the break with a defensive nous and solidity that has seen them concede only twice, one of which came from the spot against Uruguay. They topped a group containing three World Cup winning nations in England, Uruguay and Italy and overcame Greece to reach the quarters for the first time in their history, they have won many fans along the way and their name stands out as one not many expected to see in the final eight. No one will take them lightly at this stage however, something Uruguay and possibly Italy were guilty of in the group stage. Soon to be Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is a man of great experience however and there is no danger that his squad will take this game lightly.
0' ITAIPAVA ARENA FONTE NOVA
Tonight's match is the 59th of the tournament so far and is taking place in the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador. First used for the 2013 Confederations Cup, it has a capacity of 55,000 and has already hosted five games at this World Cup, most recently Belgium's victory over the USA. This was also the venue for the Netherlands exhilarating 5-1 demolition of Spain way back in the Group Stage, so the Dutch will be hoping it will prove a happy hunting ground once again. 24 goals have been scored here over five matches at an average of 4.8 a game, so expect a high scoring encounter.
0' REF WATCH
37 year-old Uzbek Ravshan Irmatov takes charge of tonight's quarter-final. This is his fourth game in charge so far this World Cup, after Switzerland v Ecuador, Croatia v Mexico and USA v Germany, and his ninth at this level after overseeing five games in 2010 where he was the youngest official involved. He has also appeared at the Confederations Cup, the 2012 Olympics and three separate FIFA Club World Cups, and is highly regarded as one of the top young referees on the circuit.
