Brazil vs. Colombia
Minute Commentary
90' DEFENSIVE DUO DRAG BRAZIL OVER THE LINE
A goal from each centre back gave Brazil a 2-1 victory over Colombia in tonight's World Cup quarter-final at Estadio Castelao, Fortaleza. Thiago Silva gave the hosts the perfect start when the captain bundled Neymar's corner over the line in the seventh minute, and David Luiz scored the all-important second with a cracking 68th-minute free kick that flew into the top corner. An incredibly open match littered with constant fouling saw each team put everything into their performances, and it was a shame that either had to go out. Neymar and Hulk each went close to scoring on several occasions, and Colombia threatened through Juan Cuadrado and Fredy Guarin, before finally scoring when Julio Cesar downed substitute Carlos Bacca in the 80th minute and James Rodriguez calmly converted the penalty. Mario Yepes had the ball in the net after that, only to be adjudged offside, and Brazil somehow hung on to make it into the semi-finals. Colombia and their star turn James Rodriguez have contributed so much to this wonderful tournament, but it felt like they came up against destiny tonight. Yet again Brazil scrape through, but whether they can do it again against the mighty Germany will surely make for an incredible spectacle.
90' FULL TIME BRAZIL 2 COLOMBIA 1
That's it. Three shrill blasts of the referee's whistle send Colombia out of the World Cup and Brazil through to the semi-finals for the next step of this now spiritual journey. They've held on to win this match by two goals to one.
90' OVER AT THE DEATH
Juan Quintero curls a free kick into the box from the right, with everybody including the goalkeeper waiting to meet it, and Adrian Ramos heads up and over the crossbar.
90' RAMOS GOES CLOSE
Rodriguez floats a right-sided corner over the penalty area, and Ramos hangs in the air to glance a header wide of the far post. Could that be the last chance for Colombia?
90' TOO MUCH ON IT
Hernanes looks for the run of Ramires with a diagonal clip over the defence, but the ball carries too much weight and runs out for a goal kick before the Chelsea midfielder can reach it.
90' FIVE MINUTES
Luiz Felipe Scolari charges down the touchline in outrage as the fourth official raises a board showing five minutes of stoppage time, which in fact seems very reasonable.
88' SUBSTITUTION
Neymar takes Juan Zuniga's knee in the small of his back and lies prostrate on the turf, prompting the levels of concern you'd expect with the Selecao's star man in obvious pain. The forward is stretchered off in some distress, with Henrique replacing him.
86' SUBSTITUTION
Hernanes gets a late run-out in place of Paulinho.
85' ARMERO OFFSIDE
Adrian Ramos plays the ball out to Pablo Armero on the left as Colombia break away, but the full back is flagged two yards offside. Not the time to lose sight of the line.
83' SUBSTITUTION
Luiz Felipe Scolari makes his first change of the night, bringing Ramires on for Hulk in an effort to strengthen his defensive forces and close out the game.
80' SUBSTITUTION
Cuadrado, who has become increasingly frustrated, is replaced by Juan Quintero.
80' GOAL!!! COLOMBIA
Game on! JAMES RODRIGUEZ staggers his run and waits for Julio Cesar to go down to his left before slotting the ball into the opposite corner of the net with an amazing calmness.
77' PENALTY!
James Rodriguez's clever pass puts Carlos Bacca through on goal. The substitute dinks the ball over the sprawling Cesar, who cleans him out, and a penalty is instantly awarded. Only the close proximity of Luiz saves the Brazil keeper from being dismissed.
75' MISHIT
The stumbling Guarin manages to just about prod a pass to Cuadrado before toppling, and the latter jinks inside from the left to go for goal, but his effort is mishit and Julio Cesar is able to stop it with no difficulty at all.
73' CURLER FROM NEYMAR
Neymar approaches the 18-yard line with the goal in his sights and goes for the top corner with a curled effort that only just clears the angle of post and bar.
72' YELLOW CARD
Yepes is booked for dissent after arguing the award of a free kick for Rodriguez's foul on Silva.
70' SUBSTITUTION
In the aftermath of that strike, Colombia replace Gutierrez with Carlos Bacca.
68' GOAL!!! BRAZIL
DAVID LUIZ steps up to take the free kick from 30 yards out, and it's a beauty, hit with the instep but somehow generating colossal power to take the ball past David Ospina's despairing dive and into the top corner of the net. Dreams are coming true for Brazil in Fortaleza.
67' YELLOW CARD
James Rodriguez is booked for a badly-timed sliding tackle on Hulk, although no contact was actually made. The irony is that the playmaker has been kicked relentlessly all night without his assailants ever being censured.
66' GOAL DISALLOWED
Mario Yepes sticks the ball in the back of the net after Rodriguez's free kick results in a goalmouth scramble, but the defender had already been flagged for offside.
64' YELLOW CARD
The first yellow card of the night comes not as a result of one of the umpteen late tackles on display, but instead is awarded when Thiago Silva nicks the ball away from Ospina as he goes to take a goal kick out of his hands. That piece of idiocy means that the Brazil captain would miss the semi-final should his team progress.
64' FURTHER FOUL PLAY
Cuadrado goes from foulee to fouler with an unceremonious clomp on Neymar. The latter sends the free kick curling towards goal, but it proves an easy catch for Ospina.
62' UNLIKELY HERO
Marcelo clips Juan Cuadrado's heels, granting the visitors a free kick on the right. Rodriguez's clip into the box is met by the head of Zapata, but Fred of all people is there to block the effort.
59' INTO ROW Z
Armero somehow reaches Teofilo Gutierrez's overhit pass and dinks the ball back from the byline. James Rodriguez controls the ball with exquisite skill and flicks it to Fredy Guarin, who drifts a volley high into the stands.
58' TIME-WASTER
Silva goes through the back of Adrian Ramos, hurting himself in the process, but the Brazil captain is soon back on his feet. Time-wasting heavily suspected.
55' SCRAPPY SPELL
The game has become seriously scrappy, with barely a minute going by without an infringement. How the referee has managed to avoid showing a card is beyond anybody's guess.
52' DODGY REF
Hulk puts his foot on a free kick, Neymar then striking it into the area. Cristian Zapata beats David Luiz to head the ball behind, but the officials, who are not having an impressive night, award a goal kick.
50' MAGNETIC MAN
Juan Cuadrado curls a free kick into the box from the right-hand side, but that man Thiago Silva is, as usual, on hand to head it away. Like all the best centre backs, you'd think the ball was magnetised to him.
49' SENSITIVE SOULS
Colombia's players look determined to land their Brazilian counterparts in trouble this half. They're jumping over every challenge and making a meal out of every slight touch.
46' SECOND HALF
The players are back out and the second half is underway. Jose Pekerman has made a change at the break, replacing the largely ineffective Victor Ibarbo with Adrian Ramos.
45' SILVA STRIKE PUTS BRAZIL IN FRONT
An early strike by Thiago Silva eased Brazil's nerves but also set the stage for a first half that has pulsed with energy. The skipper bundled the ball into the net at the back post after Colombia's defence was sucked under Neymar's seventh-minute corner, but since then the two defences have stood firm. Hulk enjoyed the pick of the chances for Brazil, but each time the burly striker hammered his shots straight at David Ospina, while Neymar threatened with a pair of direct free kicks. Julio Cesar hasn't made a save in Brazil's goal, but that doesn't mean Colombia haven't had a shot. Fredy Guarin sent a free kick narrowly wide, while Juan Cuadrado rippled the side-netting and later failed to control the ball when right in front of goal. James Rodriguez et al need to improve if they want to win this match, but they're not too far off the necessary performance level. Tempers have frayed at times, and sparks will surely fly after half time. Stay tuned for all the action.
45' HALF TIME BRAZIL 1 COLOMBIA 0
It's half time here at Estadio Castelao, where Brazil hold a slender 1-0 advantage over their South American rivals Colombia.
44' NEYMAR HACKED
Zuniga hacks down Neymar, who had just embarrassed the right back with a nutmeg, leaving Brazil with a free kick 20 yards from goal. Neymar bends his effort over the wall and wide of the right-hand post, with David Ospina rooted to the spot.
42' HALF TIME DRAWS NEAR
With the first half drawing to a close, it looks like Brazil will be entering the break with a vital advantage. This would be a really good time for Colombia to score.
39' NOWHERE NEAR
Neymar slips the ball out wide to Hulk, who drops his shoulder to move past Juan Zuniga but then blasts his shot hopelessly high and wide
37' HASTY RUNNERS
Rodriguez's effort from the set-piece is charged down by two defenders who seemed to move before the ball was kicked, but the referee allows play to continue.
35' TOO SLOW CUADRADO
The overlapping Pablo Armero loops a high cross over the box, where Cuadrado takes too long in controlling it and misses his chance to finish. Yet another Fernandinho foul provides some consolation, however, bringing Colombia a free kick just outside the area.
33' BREATHING SPACE FOR BRAZIL
The game seems to be taking a well-earned breather for a few minutes as Brazil knock the ball about almost unmolested. Colombia may be recovering their energy, but they need to remember they're chasing the game. It seems unlikely that they'll sit back for long.
30' HEROIC BLOCK
Guarin slips a short pass to his right for Cuadrado, who goes for goal from just outside the box. The shot is instantly stopped in its tracks by Thiago Silva, who steams out of defence to hurl his body heroically in the way.
28' HULK SMASH
Marcelo controls Armero's clearance and cuts the ball back for Hulk, who hammers in a shot that Ospina can only beat away.
27' STEPONER
Hulk accidentally steps on the ball in the midst of attempting a complex series of stepovers, but recovers his wits to pass inside to Marcelo. The left back shoots from the edge of the area, the effort flicking off Fred's head and over the crossbar.
24' TEMPERS FRAYING
Rodriguez and Fernandinho tussle again after the midfielder again brings his Colombian opponent down inside the centre circle, and things threaten to turn ugly. The ref wades in to separate the players, and again no cards are shown.
22' VITAL INTERCEPTION
A brilliant break sees James Rodriguez skip past three Brazil players and find Juan Cuadrado on the right. The winger tries to play in Teofilo Gutierrez, but his pass is just cut out by the stretching Silva.
20' DOUBLE CHANCE
Hulk plays a dynamic one-two with Neymar to burst through on goal, but the forward inexplicably takes an extra touch that sends him slightly wide, allowing David Ospina to make the save from his angled shot. Oscar's rebound, struck from just inside the area, draws a second save from the beleaguered keeper.
17' ARMERO SAVES THE DAY
Mario Yepes' legs can't keep up with the dribbling Maicon, so Pablo Armero is forced to save the day and concede a corner with a tackle on the right back. Cuadrado's poor clearance is collected by Hulk, who evades Victor Ibarbo to send a low ball across the face of goal, where Armero boots it away just in front of David Luiz.
14' GAME MANAGEMENT
Fernandinho catches Rodriguez with a late tackle, provoking a heated discussion between the two sets of players, but the referee decides not to take any action at this stage. He'll have to keep a lid on any aggression in such a high-pressure game.
11' SIDE-NETTING
Juan Cuadrado, floored by a hefty challenge, gets back up as Pablo Armero wins the ball and takes over to ripple the side-netting with an 18-yard drive that takes a slight deflection off Silva. Guarin takes the corner and fails to clear the first man.
10' GUARIN'S EFFORT
James Rodriguez is knocked sprawling in mid-air, resulting in a free kick for Colombia. Fredy Guarin takes a run-up and belts his effort wide of both the wall and the net.
7' GOAL!!! BRAZIL
Fernandinho finds the run of Neymar with a terrific early pass hit with the outside of his right boot, and Cristian Zapata gets across to nick the ball out for a corner with his toe. Neymar curls the set-piece in from the left, and the defence gets sucked underneath it, allowing the unmarked THIAGO SILVA to bundle the ball into the net at the back post.
4' NEYMAR OFF TARGET
Fred is bundled to the ground by Carlos Sanchez deep inside Colombia's half, giving the hosts an early free kick. Neymar, after a lengthy pause, whips the ball over the wall and out wide of the left-hand post.
1' KICK OFF
Referee Carlos Velasco Carballo blows the whistle to get the second quarter-final of World Cup 2014 underway here in Fortaleza. The atmosphere is intense to say the least.
0' NATIONAL PRIDE
As you'd expect, both national anthems have been sung with heart and conviction. Brazil continued as usual with their acapella second verse, but this time no tears were observed. Game heads look firmly on.
0' RED COLOMBIA
It's a shame that both of these teams couldn't appear in their customary brilliant yellow tonight, but one team had to take the hit, and of course it's not the hosts. Colombia line up in red for this one.
0' THE PRESSURE IS ON
Occasions rarely come as pressured as this. Colombia have impressed at this World Cup, perhaps more than any other team, but a loss for Brazil tonight would still be seen as an abject failure by the country's fanatical football fanbase. To play in the classic Brazilian style means to play with a sense of fun and adventure; whether the conditions here tonight are conducive to such play remains to be seen.
0' COLOMBIA LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
Colombia coach Jose Pekerman has shuffled his pack, with striker Jackson Martinez returning to the bench and Fredy Guarin making up a five-man midfield, while Victor Ibarbo surprisingly replaces the impressive Abel Aguilar.
0' BRAZIL LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
There's a surprising inclusion at right back as veteran Maicon is selected ahead of Dani Alves, who has had shaky moments at this tournament. Elsewhere Paulinho comes in for the suspended Luiz Gustavo, while Fernandinho keeps his place in midfield.
0' BRAZIL V COLOMBIA
For all those suffering from World Cup withdrawal, the pain will soon be over; this evening the finest spectacle in football returns as host nation Brazil take on Colombia in the second heavyweight quarter-final match-up. It's time for things to get very serious indeed. An emotional campaign has seen the Selecao labour at times while always coming up with the winning ingredients; their second round encounter with an impressive Chile side pushed them to the metaphorical line and the stressful reality of a penalty shootout, but today's opponents are perhaps even more formidable than those red-shirted tormentors. Colombia, having won four games out of four, make a fine case to be considered as the tournament's finest side so far, and they surely possess the finest player in the form of the precociously talented James Rodrgiuez. This match will be overflowing with the joyous South American spirit we've all come to love during these finals, so join me, Luke Ostler, at 9pm for all the action from Estadio Castelao, Fortaleza.
0' REF WATCH
Spaniard Carlos Velasco Carballo is the man to take charge of tonight's encounter. The experienced official has been refereeing in La Liga since 2004, and has restricted himself to two yellow cards in each of the two World Cup games he has presided over, so he knows how to control a game. Those skills could prove vital in tonight's pressure-cooker atmosphere.
0' BITE THOSE LIPS BOYS
Emotional scenes at the conclusion of Brazil's triumph over Chile have persuaded coach Luiz Felipe Scolari to call in a sports psychologist to work with his under-pressure squad. Several players were seen in tears following a harrowing penalty shootout, but three considerably higher-profile games remain if the hosts are to go all the way in this World Cup. They must not crack under the weight of expectation.
0' REVENGE MISSION
Colombia coach Jose Pekerman has unfinished business tonight; in 2006 the Argentinian led his home country into World Cup battle against hosts Germany in a last-16 encounter, a match that devastatingly ended in defeat on penalties. The desire to lay those ghosts to rest will be all the stronger for facing Brazil, the avowed rival of Pekerman's homeland.
0' ONE TO WATCH
James Rodriguez may have taken the headlines, but the form of flying winger Juan Cuadrado has had almost as much influence on Colombia's unexpected success. The Fiorentina man has come up with four assists so far in the tournament, the most of any player, and could prove too much for the vulnerable Dani Alves and Marcelo to handle.
0' BRAZIL TEAM NEWS
Paulinho is set to make a return to the starting line-up in place of the suspended Luiz Gustavo, while Neymar has recovered from the selection of knocks he suffered against Chile and will be fit to play.
0' COLOMBIA TEAM NEWS
Jose Pekerman has no injury worries ahead of this vital clash, but could decide to drop striker Jackson Martinez in favour of the extra midfielder he deployed earlier in the tournament.
