Belgium vs. United States
Minute Commentary
120' SUMMARY
Nothing I can write here will do this game justice. I don't think there is enough time for me to sum-up every chance. What a game - without doubt the game of the tournament so far. For 90 minutes these two sides sparred like two heavyweight boxers, throwing their best punches at each other, whilst leaving themselves exposed to incoming attacks. Tim Howard had the game of his life, stopping almost every single member of the Belgian team, whilst his team-mates were dangerous going forward. It only took three minutes of extra time for Belgium to break the deadlock, with the recently introduced Romelu Lukaku finding Kevin de Bruyne, who slotted home. Belgium grabbed their second minutes later, Kevin Mirallas finding Lukaku who beat Howard with a high, powerful shot. Half time in extra time saw the Belgians begin to celebrate, but minutes after the restart, USA's own late substitute Julian Green finished off a lovely team move to give them hope. Despite them throwing everything, including the kitchen sink, at the goal, USA could not find a way through, and Belgium held on for the win. Players like Jermaine Jones, Axel Witsel and Marouane Fellaini could barely stand at the end, such was the effort they had put in. Honourable mentions must go to Howard and substitue DeAndre Yedlin - both had superb games. USA can go home with their heads held high, knowing that they contributed to one of the great matches of this tournament, whilst Belgium must somehow recover from this huge energy drain ahead of their tie with the much-fancied Argentines. Belgium 2 - 1 USA.
120' FULL TIME
That's it! This incredible, enthralling, exhilarating game of football has come to an end, and Belgium progress to face Argentina. Belgium 2 - 1 USA.
120' ADDED TIME
One minute is added on. Jurgen Klinsmann is furious - he wants more.
120' NEARLY OVER
Belgium are holding the ball. Lukaku could have taken it to the corner, but he chose to try and pick out Mirallas instead. Fitting for this game.
118' PRESSING
Less than two minutes to go. The whole stadium is roaring USA forward. Can they do it? Marc Wilmots is losing it on the touchline, urging his players to just stay back.
117' ALL OR NOTHING
Omar Gonzalez is playing as an extra striker now, and who can blame him.
116' CAN THEY DO IT?
It feels like the whole world wants USA to get a goal back here - it would only seem fair for this cracker of a tie to be decided by penalties.
114' SO CLOSE
USA try the most ambitious free kick, so deep in extra time. Jermaine Jones runs over it, Michael Bradley passes to the feet of Clint Dempsey, and his effort is somehow kept out by Courtois. This is unreal.
112' BELGIUM CHANGE
Nacer Chadli replaces Eden Hazard. Hazard isn't happy, the Belgium fans aren't happy, and both Axel Witsel and Marouane Fellaini look perplexed - they are both shattered.
111' DOES IT AGAIN
This is like watching a replay. Romelu Lukaku holds off Besler and Gonzalez, fires a low shot in, and Tim Howard blocks with his legs.
110' WHAT A MATCH
Nothing else to add. Just a superb game of football.
109' HOW DOES HE MISS?
This game is not over, not by a long shot. DeAndre Yedlin crosses from the right, Jermaine Jones meets it with the outside of his boot, and nearly cries as it sails inches wide.
107' WHAT A FINISH
Michael Bradley plays a lovely ball over the top, Julian Green times his run to perfection, and he volleys it straight past Thibaut Courtois. Toby Alderweireld was just too tired to track Green there. Belgium 2 - 1 USA.
107' GOOOAAALLL!!!
USA HAVE ONE BACK!
106' BACK UNDERWAY
The second half of extra time is underway here. Regardless of the result, the USA players can be very proud of their efforts tonight.
105' END OF THE HALF
The referee blows the whistle - the first half of extra time is over, and Belgium look to have sealed their progress to the next round.
105' USA CHANGE
Julian Green replaces Alejandro Bedoya, who can barely stand.
105' ADDED TIME
Two minutes are added at the end of the first period of extra time.
105' DEVASTATING
This is very, very harsh on USA. Belgium break through Kevin de Bruyne, who holds it up before knocking a perfectly weighted ball through to Lukaku. He takes it first time with his left foot, lifting it over Tim Howard and into the goal. Belgium 2 - 0 USA.
105' GOOOAAALLL!!!
BELGIUM HAVE THEIR SECOND!
104' WELL HELD
Kevin Mirallas is the next man to try shooting at goal, and is the next man to be kept out by Tim Howard. If this goes to penalties, I wouldn't want to face him.
103' OUCH
Jermaine Jones must be dazed at the very least, taking a clearance from Kevin de Bruyne full in the face from about 2 yards.
101' STRONG
It almost seems unfair that Belgium have the fresh, quick and strong Lukaku to call upon. Hazard slips it through to him and he has time to pick his shot, but once again Howard keeps it out. He must be the man of the match, regardless of the result here.
100' PRESSURE
USA are desperate to get back into this tie, but they are oh so tired. Their players are practically queueing up in the box to have a shot, but Clint Dempsey manages to knock it off his own calf, allowing Belgium to clear.
97' ENCOURAGING
Lukaku forces a save from Howard, and then turns to the crowd to try and get a reaction from them. He has made an immediate impact tonight.
96' WASTED
Lukaku almost does it again, beating his man with ease before laying it off to a team-mate. Unfortunately, that man is Jan Vertonghen, and he dithers on the ball which allows USA to clear.
94' POOR
Michael Bradley gets everyone in the box for his free kick from the right, but he gets it all wrong as the ball sails well over the top.
93' SUPER SUB
This goal is all about Romelu Lukaku. The fresh man brushes off Matt Besler with ease, before racing into the area. He cuts it back to Kevin de Bruyne, who rolls his marker before sliding it past Howard into the corner. Belgium 1 - 0 USA.
93' GOOOAAALLL!!!
BELGIUM TAKE THE LEAD!!!!
92' TACTICAL
Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne have switched wings. A good tactical move from Wilmots? If it pays off, people will ask why it took so long.
91' KICK OFF
We are back underway in this tie. More of the same, please. Romelu Lukaku is coming on for Divock Origi. The entire USA defence just gulped.
90' FULL TIME
Well, the referee blows the whistle, and we are faced with another 30 minutes of this. Can your heart take this? I'm not sure mine can.
90' OFFSIDE
Most of the stadium have their head in their hands as Chris Wondolowski volleys over when faced with an empty goal. He is given a reprieve by the flag going up, but a replay shows that was an incorrect decision.
90' ADDED TIME
Three additional minutes are signalled, before another 30. There are some very tired men out there.
90' REFLEX SAVE
I cannot say anything else about Tim Howard, he is just superb. Belgium break once more and de Bruyne's cross finds Kompany of all people, but his scuffed effort is somehow kept out by Howard. Belgium have their 15th and 16th corners of the game, but they come to nothing.
88' COUNTER
Belgium waste a golden late opportunity. Kevin de Bruyne picks up the ball and powers forward, laying it off to Eden Hazard on the left. Instead of picking out one of the several Belgians in the box, he fires into the side netting. So disappointing for a player of his quality.
87' INCREDIBLE
Am I the only one who thinks this might be a contender for game of the tournament? It seems crazy to suggest that for a 0 - 0 draw, but it really has been top drawer.
85' TIPPED OVER
Divock Origi turns on the edge of the box, holds off his man, and fires in a powerful shot which Tim Howard has to tip over.
84' NEXT ROUND
Argentina faced an energy-sapping extra 30 minutes against Switzerland today, and both of these teams will want to win in normal time to give themselves an advantage heading into the quarter-final with the South American team.
82' IMPRESSIVE
DeAndre Yedlin has looked superb since coming on - I'm sure there are more than a few European scouts in the crowd, watching him amongst others. He has done himself proud since his introduction.
81' TIRED
The USA hit on the counter, but Jermaine Jones wastes a great opportunity. Chris Wondolowski gives him the ball, and instead of doing anything productive with it, he hits a hopeless cross-field ball far in front of DeAndre Yedlin.
80' RUNNING OUT OF WORDS
Tim Howard is on fire. Toby Alderweireld crosses from the right, Fellaini knocks the ball down, and Eden Hazard's powerful volley is kept out by a diving Howard save. Fantasy football players with him in their team will be delighted.
79' FRIENDLY
With Gonzalez receiving treatment on the pitch, the Belgian players take a chance to take on some water. Marc Wilmots and Jurgen Klinsmann share a joke and an embrace - great to see.
78' INJURY
Omar Gonzalez is down in his own box - a replay shows he turned his ankle after landing following a header. That looks very painful.
76' SUPERB SAVE
Tim Howard, take a bow. Eden Hazard wins the ball back from Yedlin, and plays it inside to Origi. He holds it up well before slotting Mirallas through, and his goalbound effort is tipped wide by the outstretched leg of Howard.
75' SLOWING DOWN
The sides are beginning to tire, and the prospect of extra time is creeping into a few minds. Both teams have played fantastically for the vast majority of this game - have they given all they've got?
72' USA CHANGE
Graham Zusi jogs off, with Chris Wondolowski replacing him.
72' ANOTHER LONG EFFORT
DeAndre Yedlin picks out Clint Dempsey on the edge of the box, and he curls a first-time low effort in which Courtois holds. Belgium immediately go up the other end and Divock Origi forces a low save from Tim Howard. This game just keeps on giving.
69' SO CLOSE
Belgium throw men forward once more, looking for any gap in the USA backline, but they just can't find one. The ball eventually comes out to Axel Witsel, who hammers in a low shot from 25 yards, which flashes just past the post with Tim Howard beaten.
67' GOOD SAVE
DeAndre Yedlin sends in yet another good cross from the right, and Thibaut Courtois has to be at absolute full stretch to pluck it from the air. Clint Dempsey was prowling just behind him.
66' ENTHRALLING
This really has been a cracking game so far - hopefully American fans of other sports are learning to appreciate a goalless draw!
63' POOR
Graham Zusi is not having a good night. DeAndre Yedlin finds him on the overlap, and he is robbed without problem by Jan Vertonghen.
61' BELGIUM CHANGE
Everton man Kevin Mirallas comes on for Dries Mertens. Imagine being a fly on the wall at Goodison should Mirallas score past Tim Howard.
60' SO CLOSE
How have we not had a goal yet?! Divock Origi uses his pace to make space in the box, before sending a low ball in which Dries Mertens sends wide of the post.
58' COUNTER
USA hit Belgium on the counter, the previously maligned Zusi flashing a shot across the face of goal which nobody can get on the end of.
57' ANOTHER CHANCE
Belgium are pressing here. Graham Zusi is leaving his defence exposed, and Jan Vertonghen is exposing him, volleying a cross-field ball at goal. It misses the upright by a matter of inches.
56' OFF THE BAR
Toby Alderweireld crosses from deep on the right, Origi gets up to loop a header at goal, and Tim Howard can only watch as the ball strikes the top off the bar. Close.
54' SO CLOSE
Jan Vertonghen beats Graham Zusi and curls a lovely, low ball into the box. Both Kevin de Bruyne and Divock Origi throw themselves at it, but they are both a studs' length away.
52' WASTED
Marouane Fellaini wins the ball in midfield and gets a rush of blood to the head, shooting from 35 yards when laying it off to a team-mate would have been a much better option. Unsurprisingly, it sails over.
51' INTERESTING STAT
Michael Bradley has covered more ground in this World Cup than any other player - almost 21 miles. A good effort from the former Aston Villa midfielder.
50' GOOD SHAPE
Belgium press forward once more, but USA get several men behind the ball, stifling any threat that the Belgians offer. That seems to have been a slight tactical shuffle by Jurgen Klinsmann.
47' FIRST CHANCE
Kevin de Bruyne swings in a cross from the left and Dries Mertens loops a header towards goal. Tim Howard acrobatically tips it over the bar, with what some might call a 'camera save'.
46' KICK OFF
Belgium get the second half underway, kicking from right to left. No changes from either manager.
45' HALF OF GREAT FOOTBALL
This has to be one of the most entertaining 0-0 draws I have seen in a long time. Both sides have thrown caution to the wind and there have been countless chances - it has almost been a half of two halves, with Belgium dominating the first, and USA the second. Fabian Johnson limped off the field with a hamstring problem, but his replacement DeAndre Yedlin has fitted seamlessly into the play. Stay with us - this game can only get more exciting.
45' HALF TIME
The referee ends the half, and both sides walk off to warm applause from the crowd.
45' EFFORT
Kevin de Bruyne tries to catch Tim Howard out with a speculative effort, but the Everton man saves smartly.
45' ADDED TIME
Three additional minutes are signalled.
42' BOOKING
Vincent Kompany picks up a booking for clattering into the back of Clint Dempsey.
41' ANOTHER CHANCE
DeAndre Yedlin is in acres of space down the right flank and is picked out by a cross-field ball. He controls it, and instead of playing it to the men in the box, he picks out Graham Zusi on the edge of the area. His shot misses the post by inches.
39' DOMINATING
USA are really giving it their all here. Omar Gonzalez sends a delicious cross in from the right flank, and Daniel van Buyten has to time his leap to perfection to knock it away from Clint Dempsey.
36' PRESSURE
This is a cracking game. Michael Bradley checks back with the ball and eventually dinks it into the box from deep, where it is just over the head of Jermaine Jones. The whole stadium is deep in the throes of a Mexican wave - lovely stuff.
34' NICE TRY
Clint Dempsey does well to bring the ball down out of the air following a corner, and he lays it off to Jermaine Jones. Jones, who scored a belter earlier in the tournament, grimaces as his low drive is inches wide of the post.
32' SUBSTITUTION
DeAndre Yedlin of the Seattle Sounders replaces Fabian Johnson, who looks devastated.
31' INJURY
Fabian Johnson stretches to reach the ball, and immediately pulls up. His night is over, his hamstring has gone, and a substitute is warming up.
30' ANOTHER CHANCE
Divock Origi gets the ball out on the left and cuts inside, but his weak effort is cleared by Geoff Cameron.
28' PACE
Eden Hazard decides to go on a run, and when he decides to do that, very few people in the world can stop him. His low ball into the box gets cut out by Omar Gonzalez, who manages to scramble it out for a corner.
26' SO CLOSE
Jan Vertonghen finds himself high up the field and breaks into the box from the left. He tries to find Marouane Fellaini at the far post but DaMarcus Beasley does well to hack it away.
23' WASTED
So close for Belgium. Jan Vertonghen robs Graham Zusi in midfield and suddenly Belgium are in a five-on-two situation. Vertonghen finds Kevin de Bruyne on the left, who cuts onto his right foot before completely scuffing his effort wide.
21' ANOTHER CHANCE
Well, USA are the team on the attack all of a sudden. Michael Bradley surges forward and runs into trouble on the edge of the box, but the ball fortunately falls to Clint Dempsey. His low effort forces a good save from Thibaut Courtois.
20' HALF-CHANCE
Graham Zusi sends in a corner from the right, Geoff Cameron gets up well to knock it down, and Clint Dempsey is inches away from connecting.
18' BOOKING
Geoff Cameron is a lucky boy here, going in late and hard on Dries Mertens as the Belgian was trying to break. Cameron picks up a yellow card, but I've seen more given for that.
16' ENTERTAINMENT
For what I believe is the first time this tournament, a pitch invader has entered the field of play, calling a temporary halt to proceedings. Luckily, the invader is clothed, but security take an age to come and remove him.
15' BACK ON
Divock Origi has returned to the field of play, but isn't moving too freely. It will be interesting to see if he lasts much longer.
14' WORRY
Divock Origi goes down after a late challenge from Matt Besler, and he looks to be in some pain. Having got the nod ahead of Romelu Lukaku, it seems unlikely that Origi would stay down unless really hurt.
12' STILL IN CHARGE
Belgium are the side fashioning the chances here, but much like the rest of the tournament, they don't actually look like taking many of them. Marc Wilmots is frustrated on the bench.
10' SETTLED
The pace of the game has slowed somewhat and now it looks like the players are looking for options, instead of charging forward recklessly.
7' END TO END
Both sides are giving this a go, and are moving forward in numbers. Let's hope they don't burn themselves out early - there's a lot of pace on show today.
5' POOR PASS
USA have a chance to counter and Michael Bradley carries the ball out of defence, but his pass in the direction of Clint Dempsey just doesn't have the pace required.
3' PRESSURE
Belgium are completely dominant in the opening stages. They have already had two corners - the USA look sluggish in comparison.
1' CHANCE
Belgium nearly find a way through in the first minute! Divock Origi uses his electric pace to run on to a through-ball down the right, before cutting inside and forcing a good save off the legs of Tim Howard.
1' KICK OFF
We are underway in the final game in the round of 16. A tie with Argentina awaits.
0' BREAKING USA TEAM NEWS
America make two changes, with Geoff Cameron replacing Kyle Beckerman in defence, and Alejandro Bedoya coming in for Brad Davis. Jozy Altidore is on the bench.
0' BREAKING BELGIUM TEAM NEWS
After resting several key players for the win over South Korea, Belgium revert to a more familiar line-up. Toby Alderweireld and Vincent Kompany return in defence, whilst Axel Witsel, Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne and Divock Origi all come back in. Romelu Lukaku is controversially starting from the bench.
0' PREVIEW
The group stages are long gone – we are now well into knockout football territory, and yet the excitement from this World Cup does not look like slowing down. Three of the six games so far in this round have gone to extra time, with two going all the way to penalties, and many will be hoping that this game does exactly the same. The final stop in the round of 16 sees Belgium, one of the most overrated ‘underrated' teams in the world, take on the slight surprise packages of the USA – who many didn't fancy to get out of a group with Germany, Portugal and Ghana. However you look at this, we should be in for an excellent game, so strap yourselves in. My name is Peter Moloney and I will be guiding you through this one.
0' BELGIUM TEAM NEWS
Marc Wilmots has several injury worries ahead of this tie, particularly in defence. Thomas Vermaelen will miss the game with a hamstring injury, whilst Vincent Kompany sat out the match with South Korea due to a groin problem and is still struggling. Stephen Defour is missing due to suspension following his red card against the South Koreans, whilst Laurent Ciman and Anthony Vanden Borre are definitely ruled out. It could be tough for the Belgians to field four fit defenders.
0' USA TEAM NEWS
Jurgen Klinsmann has only one real injury doubt – Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore. The forward featured in their first game, a win over Ghana, but has been missing since then with a hamstring problem. Klinsmann has said the powerful forward will make the squad, but is unlikely to start.
0' PERMUTATIONS
Nothing to report here – this is standard knockout football. If the score is tied after 90 minutes, an extra 30 minutes will be played. If the score is still level after that, we have the prospect of a penalty shoot-out – loved by the neutrals, but dreaded by fans of those involved.
0' FORM GUIDE
The Belgians are in better form heading into this tie, having won all three of their group games. They have scored four goals so far – the same as the USA – but have a much meaner defence, only conceding one goal. USA, on the other hand, went through with four points – a win over Ghana and a draw with Portugal preceded a loss to Germany. Their four goals scored were cancelled out by four conceded – so either way, I fancy there to be goals in this one!
0' FACTS AND STATS
The last time that these two met in a World Cup was also in South America – the USA beat Belgium 3-0 in Montevideo back in 1930. However, Belgium have won all four of the games they have played since then, keeping a clean sheet in three of those games – the sides met most recently in 2013 in America, where Belgium won 4-2. Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois boasts an impressive record – he remains unbeaten in international football. Very impressive, considering he holds 17 caps! Clint Dempsey needs just one goal to match Landon Donovan's record of five goals in World Cup finals for the USA.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Algerian referee Djamel Haimoudi is in charge of this tie, something that has given Jurgen Klinsmann a few concerns – one being that he will be able to speak in French to the Belgian players. Another worry for the USA coach is the history between the sides – USA knocked Algeria out of the last World Cup in the group stages, and his native Germany beat them last night in a thrilling tie. However, Belgium did overcome them in the first match in Group H in this tournament – so he should not be worried about impartiality. Haimoudi has been an international referee since 2004, and was listed as African referee of the year in 2012. He took charge of both the Africa Cup of Nations final and the Confederations Cup third-place playoff in 2013, so he is a very experienced official.
