Minute Commentary
120' BRAZIL 1 CHILE 1 (BRAZIL WIN 3-2 ON PENALTIES)
Brazil go through to the next stage of the competition as expected, and while Chile were predicted to give them a stern test, not many would have had money on this going all the way to penalties. A memorable first half saw the game played at a blistering pace with numerous chances and two goals. David Luiz has been credited by FIFA with the first, as he got on the end of a flicked header by Thiago Silva from a corner and bundled the ball in, although it initially appeared that Gonzalo Jara got the last touch. Chile levelled things up when Brazil gifted possession to Eduardo Vargas, who set up Alexis Sanchez to finish beautifully into the bottom corner from near the penalty spot - ironically he went the same way with his penalty in the shootout and was denied. The second half had a similar intensity even though not quite the same entertainment levels were reached. Hulk had a goal controversially disallowed for handball ten minutes in, and he and Neymar missed big chances in the last ten minutes to grab a winner for Brazil. Chile were holding out for extra-time by this stage, and they kept up their superb organisation and pressing game to keep Brazil at bay in the added half hour, with Mauricio Pinilla actually having a golden chance right at the death to win it for Chile with a cracking strike that rattled the bar. After that it was penalties. Both teams had only managed to convert half their penalties going into the fifth pair of spot-kicks due to a combination of nervous penalties missed and cool-under-pressure goalkeeping. Neymar stepped up and read Claudio Bravo like a book, waiting for the Chile keeper to make his move before going the other way and burying his penalty in the bottom left corner. Gonzalo Jara went the other way with his penalty, going higher up but also wider and hitting the woodwork to send the Brazil players, coaching staff and fans wild in Belo Horizonte. The host nation now progresses to the quarter-finals to face the winners of Uruguay and Columbia - that game coming up in under an hour's time.
120' 3-2
Gonzalo Jara goes right with his penalty....and hits the post! Brazil have won this magnificent contest and are into the quarter-finals!
120' 3-2
Neymar takes a stuttering run-up and rifles his pen into the bottom left corner.
120' 2-2
Marcelo Diaz goes down the middle with better luck than Mauricio Pinilla, sending Julio Cesar the wrong way.
120' 2-1
A poor penalty from Hulk is saved by the feet of Claudio Bravo.
120' 2-1
Charles Aranguiz fires his penalty into the top right-hand corner with Julio Cesar rooted to the spot.
120' 2-0
Claudio Bravo gets a strong hand to Marcelo's penalty but can't keep it from finding the roof of the net.
120' 1-0
It's three penalties in a row missed! Julio Cesar dives low to his right to keep out Alexis Sanchez's penalty.
120' 1-0
An anxious-looking Willian shoots a low penalty wide of the left-hand post!
120' 1-0
Mauricio Pinilla sends his pen down the middle and Julio Cesar stands his ground, keeping the penalty out!
120' 1-0
David Luiz takes a long run-up and fires a confident penalty into the left side of the goal, sending Claudio Bravo the wrong way.
120' HERE WE GO
We've had some serious-looking huddles from both sides and it's all set for penalties to begin. David Luiz will step up to take the first .
120' PENALTIES IT IS
Extra time is over with no goals having been scored. Everyone is still reeling from that fantastic strike from Mauricio Pinilla moments ago that was so close to giving Chile a shock win. Stay tuned for a nerve-racking penalty shoot-out.
120' BRAZIL COUNTER, RAMIRES WIDE
Brazil break up the other end and win a corner. That's headed clear, before Ramires drags a shot wide from the edge of the area.
120' HITS THE BAR
Mauricio Pinilla gets into the box and in front of a defender to unleash a belting finish the rattles the crossbar! What a moment!
119' ENERGY LEVELS IMPRESSIVE
Intense pressing from the Chileans forces the ball all the way back to Julio Cesar - their energy levels have been astounding. Hulk rifles an ambitious shot way over from distance shortly after.
116' LAST FIVE MINUTES
As we enter the final five minutes of extra time, Chile get men behind the ball and remain organised as Brazil push and probe in the final third. A foul from the attacking team is committed out of frustration and a free kick gives Chile a breather.
113' OVER FROM DIAZ
The ball comes into the path of Marcelo Diaz who hammers a rushed first-time effort well over from around 30 yards.
111' SHOTS AT BOTH ENDS
Mauricio Pinilla hits a shot on the turn wide at the Brazil end, a minute before Dani Alves fires a skewed shot wide of Claudio Bravo's goal at the other.
108' FORCED SUB
Gary Medel is forced off on a stretcher and Jose Rojas comes on to replace him. The man leaving the field has been excellent today.
106' HEADER OVER
Jo leaps to meet a Neymar corner and sends a header over the bar.
106' LAST QUARTER OF AN HOUR
The teams have swapped ends and the final 15 minutes of extra time begin.
105' YELLOW CARD
Pinilla goes flying when blocked off by Dani Alves as the pair tussle for Bravo's long punt upfield, and the Brazil defender is shown a yellow card.
105' END OF THIRD PERIOD
The first half of extra time is over.
103' TOP SAVE
Hulk's low 20-yard drive, hit with venom, is well saved by the diving Claudio Bravo. How many times can this man be denied?
102' YELLOW CARD
Mauricio Pinilla trips David Luiz in midfield and picks up a booking for his trouble.
101' LOW POWER
Hulk, who still has amazing energy, sprints past Mena to make the byline and float a cross high over the penalty area. Oscar meets it with a downward header that holds too little power to beat the goalkeeper.
100' BORN SLIPPY
Jo seems to slip just as he reaches the ball ahead of Medel inside the box, and the substitute's shot ends up posing no problems for Bravo.
98' CHILE'S FATHER
Jorge Sampaoli is still right at the very edge of his technical area, gesticulating wildly and urging his players on to ever-greater feats. Clearly an inspirational character.
95' AUDACIOUS EFFORT
After Ramires brings down the jinking Sanchez, Marcelo Diaz goes for goal from an incredible distance with the resulting free kick, and predictably it flies miles wide.
94' YELLOW CARD
Jo goes in with his foot very high as Claudio Bravo comes to collect a bouncing ball, but the striker's vision was locked on the ball and both players fortunately come out of the collision unscathed. Jo is still booked, however, due to his raised leg.
92' MENA DOES IT ALL
Hulk's latest barnstorming run carries him halfway up the pitch, and it takes a shove from Mena to bring the heavyweight down. Neymar fires the free kick into the area from the left, where Mena is on hand again to head the ball out for a corner.
91' EXTRA TIME - FIRST HALF
Both teams have taken on gallons of water and spoken stirring words in their huddles, but now we're back and extra time is underway. Will this game be settled before it's penalty shootout time?
90' FULL TIME BRAZIL 1 CHILE 1 - EXTRA TIME
Normal time is officially over here at Estadio Mineirao, and we're heading to extra time as the tension ramps up to dangerous levels.
90' CLEAR OF DANGER
Sanchez fizzes the corner across the face of goal, and it's deflected away.
90' SAFETY FIRST
Marcelo Diaz has a dig from a long way out; the shot is off target, but very nearly runs through to Mauricio Pinilla on Alves' shoulder. The right back does the only thing he can do and touches it out for a corner.
90' NO BREAK FOR BRAZIL
Isla collapses on the edge of the box under pressure from Marcelo, but no free kick is awarded. Ramires seizes the ball and attempts to launch a break upfield, but his pass to Neymar is overhit and serves only to concede possession.
87' SUBSTITUTION
Vidal ends a great performance by making way for the fresh legs of Mauricio Pinilla.
86' RUNNING DOWN THE CLOCK
Chile look like they want extra time now; their previously constant forward momentum has died down somewhat, and the players look tired after another colossal shift.
83' HULK DENIED AGAIN
Hulk, who has starred in this second half, wriggles past three defenders to set himself up for a right-footed shot from eight yards that Claudio Bravo wonderfully beats away. The drama shows no sign of letting up here in Belo Horizonte.
81' STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER
That might have been the chance. Dani Alves' diagonal pass into the box is met by Neymar, who reaches the ball ahead of Gary Medel but can only aim his header straight at Bravo from point blank range. Moments later the striker gets a backheeled effort all wrong as Oscar cuts the ball back from the byline.
79' BALL CONTROL
Brazil have re-established a degree of control over the ball following a mostly panicky second half performance, but they still can't find a way through Chile's ultra-organised banks of midfield and defence.
76' HULK KEEPS ON TRYING
Hulk's confidence is really up now; this time he shoots from a fair distance, the left-footed effort skidding several yards wide of the right-hand post.
74' NO JOY FOR JO
A pair of stepovers by Hulk gain the forward the space to whip in a perfect cross that looks set to be converted by Jo at the back post. Eugenio Mena stretches out a leg to very nearly touch the ball away, and it proves enough to put off the Brazil man, who can only get a useless flick on the ball.
72' SUBSTITUTION
Fernandinho appears to have picked up an injury, and so makes way for the hard-running Ramires. Let's see whether the Chelsea man can lift his side.
70' CHILE ON TOP
As we enter the final 20 minutes (of normal time at least) Chile are the team on top; they're first to the ball in the middle of the pitch, and the fans around the stadium are getting uncomfortable. Luis Felipe Scolari needs to change something here.
67' HULK OUTMUSCLED
Hulk enters the penalty area in pursuit of Luiz Gustavo's through ball and is unceremoniously blocked off by Charles Aranguiz, who must possess incredible strength judging by the way the massive Hulk bounces off him. The forward appeals for a penalty, but to no avail.
64' SUPER SAVE
Julio Cesar pulls off a terrific reaction save to deny Aranguiz, whose first-time shot from Mauricio Isla's cutback looked destined to hit the back of the net.
64' SUBSTITUTION
Fred has been sluggish again and is withdrawn in favour of Jo, who draws large cheers due to playing for Atletico Mineiro, the owners of this stadium.
63' TOUGH TACKLING
The tackles are flying in left, right and centre now as Howard Webb struggles to keep a lid on the game. It wouldn't be any surprise to see a red card before this match is concluded.
60' YELLOW CARD
Luiz Gustavo smashes into Arturo Vidal with a lunging tackle that gets nothing of the ball, and Howard Webb issues a booking.
56' SUBSTITUTION
Jorge Sampaoli makes the first substitution of the match, replacing Vargas with Felipe Gutierrez.
55' GOAL DISALLOWED
Hulk gets ahead of the defence to control the ball with what looks like a shoulder and directs the ball into the bottom-left corner with consummate ease. The striker gallops off to celebrate with the fans, but the linesman's flag had gone up for handball and Hulk is issued with a yellow card. The atmosphere is suddenly icy after that very harsh call.
52' SLOPPY PLAY
The hosts have emerged from the break looking sloppy, as they did at the end of the first half, and keep conceding possession. There's been no let-up in the pace of the game, but the quality has dipped a little for now.
49' FERNANDINHO'S SLIP
Fernandinho finds a yard of space just outside the area and aims for the corner of the net, but the Manchester City man slips as he makes his connection and the ball ends up flying wide.
48' PUNCHED AWAY
A Chile free kick surprisingly soars over Brazil's first defender, unlike in the first half, but Julio Cesar is able to jump and dismiss the ball with a powerful punch.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams have emerged back into the searing Belo Horizonte sunlight, and we're back underway for the second part of this brilliant footballing occasion. Neither coach has made any changes at this point.
45' SANCHEZ SPOILS FIRST HALF PARTY
Alexis Sanchez struck in the 32nd minute to cancel out Brazil's opener, and it's no less than this brilliant Chile side deserve after a pulsating first half that's somehow topped what we've seen in this tournament so far. A breakneck pace has at times threatened to spill over into anarchy, but Sanchez kept his head after Eduardo Vargas had stolen the ball from Hulk high up the pitch and fed his strike partner, who found the bottom corner with an excellent sidefooted shot. Earlier Brazil had taken the lead when Hulk's corner was flicked on by Thiago Silva to the far post, where Gonzalo Hara deflected the ball into his own net under pressure from David Luiz. Both sides have gone close on several other occasions, and it's a big surprise that we haven't seen more goals. That more will arrive after half time seems a near certainty.
45' HALF TIME BRAZIL 1 CHILE 1
Where has the time gone? It's half time here at Estadio Mineirao, and these two sets of superbly committed players squabble with each other as they march down the tunnel.
45' ARANGUIZ GOES CLOSE
Arturo Vidal wins the ball high up the pitch and slips an immediate pass to Sanchez, who in turn finds the lung-bursting run of Charles Aranguiz. The midfielder bears down on goal but can't get any power into his low shot from close range; Julio Cesar parries, and David Luiz emerges from a scramble of bodies to hack the ball clear of danger.
44' NOWHERE NEAR FROM HULK
Hulk decides it's his turn to try his luck with a 25-yard effort, but this one never looks like troubling the goalkeeper. For a forward, Hulk's inability to produce a goal threat always seems puzzling.
42' STUNNING STRIKE
Dani Alves glances up 30 yards from goal and lets rip with a brilliant effort that looks set to dip just under the crossbar, only for the Brazilian's new club colleague Claudio Bravo to pull off an agile leap and tip the chance over the bar.
40' YELLOW CARD
Francisco Silva receives a booking for an overly robust late tackle as Howard Webb tries to get a handle on what has been an ill-tempered meeting thus far.
39' INTO ROW Z
A superb 40-yard diagonal pass from Oscar finds Neymar encroaching into Chile's penalty area. The forward controls the ball on his chest and skips around Medel, only to be halted by Francisco Silva. The chance is still not gone, however, as Fred arrives late to somehow sky the loose ball into the stands.
36' SILVA SAVES CHILE
That was so close from Neymar! Oscar makes headway on the right wing and clips in a cross that the striker rises to head towards the top corner, but Francisco Silva manages to get something in the way with a desperate leap that takes the ball wide of the goal.
32' GOAL!!! CHILE
Chile sensationally equalise as Brazil are caught napping. Hulk's chest down from Marcelo's throw-in is easily intercepted by Eduardo Vargas, who instantly finds ALEXIS SANCHEZ near the penalty spot. Chile's star turn makes no mistake with a pinpoint sidefooted effort that rolls cheekily into the bottom-left corner of the net with Julio Cesar at full stretch.
29' ESCAPE FOR VIDAL
Neymar leaps theatrically into the air as Arturo Vidal swings wildly without getting near the ball right in front of the Brazil bench, who of course erupt into protestation. Howard Webb decides not to show a card on this occasion.
26' NEYMAR OFF TARGET
Neymar scampers through the middle in pursuit of Fernandinho's pass but, edged away from goal by the persistent Gary Medel, he drags his low shot comfortably wide of the target.
25' CHILE STILL IN IT
Credit to Chile; they don't look too rattled by that strike and are continuing to play the style of football we've all come to love. This game could still very much go either way.
22' DEAD BALL DISAPPOINTMENT
Marcelo Diaz curls a free kick into the Brazil box from the right-hand side, the effort proving unable even to clear the first man, Neymar. Chile's set-pieces are not looking up to scratch so far.
18' GOAL!!! BRAZIL
A left-sided Hulk corner is met with a terrific header by Thiago Silva that flicks the ball to the far post, where GONZALO JARA tries to stop David Luiz from scoring and succeeds only in nudging it into his own net with an outstretched calf. Not exactly a goal of great beauty, but they most certainly all count. The stadium erupts as Luiz, clearly hoping that everyone thinks it his goal, is mobbed by his teammates.
17' YELLOW CARD
Eugenio Mena cynically stops Oscar's flick with his hand, and by doing so earns himself the game's first yellow card. That booking also means that, should Chile progress, Mena would miss the quarter-final.
15' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Brazil are gifted a free kick right on the left-hand edge of the Chile penalty area, and who else but Neymar steps up to take it. The Barcelona man hangs the ball up to the back post, and it proves easy for Claudio Bravo to pluck from the air. A disappointing effort.
13' NO PENALTY FOR HULK
Hulk sets off on a powerful run and plays a neat one-two with Neymar to burst into the penalty area pursued by Mauricio Isla. The hefty forward goes down under some form of contact, but the ref waves away all penalty appeals.
11' VARGAS' SLIP
Sanchez reaches a long pass ahead of Marcelo on the right flank and tries to find Vargas with a low ball across goal, but the latter tumbles on his way forward and Julio Cesar is able to smother the chance.
9' NEYMAR WORRIES A NATION
A nation's hearts are in their mouths as Neymar spends a couple of minutes limping badly following an awkward turn, but the star man seems to run the problem off eventually. What a blow that would have been to Brazil's chances.
6' END TO END ACTION
Eduardo Vargas rises to head Hulk's corner from the left out of the box, but only as far as Marcelo. The left back deceives Alexis Sanchez with a lovely turn and whips a 20-yard shot just wide of the left-hand post. Moments later Diaz strikes a volley at the other end that dips not too far wide as the action heats up.
3' GAME MANAGEMENT
Fernandinho then steams through Charles Aranguiz just after the ball had gone with what looked like a yellow card challenge, but, as is the current fashion, Howard Webb shows no card at this early stage of the game. A warning is the midfielder's only punishment.
2' REPELLED WITH EASE
Chile get an early chance to send the ball into Brazil's box following a Thiago Silva foul. Marcelo Diaz chips it in, but Fernandinho is on hand to head strongly away.
1' KICK OFF
Referee Howard Webb blows the whistle to get the second round of the 2014 World Cup underway.
0' ATMOSPHERE OF JOY
Both teams look relaxed in the tunnel, while the crowd is a bouncing sea of yellow cut through with red swathes. The atmosphere is tense but joyous here in Belo Horizonte. Kick off approaches.
0' OMENS WITH THE HOSTS
A couple of worrying stats for Chile fans: La Roja have failed to defeat Brazil in the sides' last 11 meetings, and have never beaten them on their own turf. Still, there's a first time for everything.
0' CHILE LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
Gary Medel has been passed fit to start, and Arturo Vidal, as expected, is restored to the line-up.
0' BRAZIL LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
As expected, Paulinho has lost out to Fernandinho in the race to start this game, while Hulk keeps his place in attack in an otherwise predictable Brazil selection.
0' BRAZIL V CHILE
From 5pm this afternoon there'll be no more room for error as the knockout stages of World Cup Brazil 2014 explode into action. It's absolutely fitting that the first of eight bombastic second round clashes features the host nation as they take on fellow South Americans Chile, one of this tournament's most exciting surprise packages. The Selecao carry the shoulder-busting pressure of nearly 200 million people's hopes and dreams as they march on towards the final, and coach Luis Felipe Scolari will know his side need to step their game up following a successful but not entirely convincing group campaign. Chile, conversely, have defied all expectations by effortlessly despatching world champions Spain, but they met more than their match in their final Group B outing against the Netherlands and are now far more of a known quantity. If anything it's a shame that one of these South American nations, who have done so much to entertain us during this festival of football, has to go out at this stage. Join me, Luke Ostler, for all the action from Estadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte.
0' REF WATCH
English referee Howard Webb, who presided over 2010's World Cup final, is in charge tonight, and already the choice has prompted controversy. Brazil have railed against Chilean suggestions that Webb may be pressured into giving the hosts an easy ride in today's clash, protesting that such doubts convey a lack of respect towards both the experienced official and Brazil themselves.
0' SCOLARI, THE SPECIAL ONE
Brazil captain Thiago Silva got all emotional yesterday when called on to explain the relationship between the team and coach Luis Felipe Scolari. The defender said: ‘This guy beside me is very special for us, even in difficult moments, family issues, he's always there for us. In fact I need to stop talking because I'm a big cry baby and it might happen here'.
0' CHILE STARS ON THE MOVE
Chile's unexpected success at this World Cup has led to a storm of transfer speculation around the team's biggest stars. Arturo Vidal is said to be the subject of an astounding £44m bid from Arsenal, with Manchester United also in the hunt for the Juventus midfielder, while Alexis Sanchez has been made available for transfer by Barcelona and could find himself on the way to Anfield as part of a deal for Liverpool's Luis Suarez.
0' ONE TO WATCH
The signs all point towards the inclusion of Fernandinho in Brazil's team today at the expense of a fellow EPL midfielder, the so far underwhelming Paulinho. The Manchester City man has bided his time on the bench while public opinion has swelled in his favour, and a tremendous second half performance as a substitute against Cameroon, including a great goal, seems to have finally convinced Scolari of his merits. If selected, Fernandinho's balance of attacking and defensive abilities will be vital in nullifying Chile.
0' BRAZIL TEAM NEWS
David Luiz should recover from a slight back problem in time to start the match, while Neymar, Luis Gustavo, Thiago Silva and Ramires are all one booking away from a suspension.
0' CHILE TEAM NEWS
Arturo Vidal is set to return after being rested against the Netherlands, but Gary Medel is doubtful after suffering a muscle strain.
