United States vs. Germany
Minute Commentary
90' THE USA AND GERMANY BOTH QUALIFY FOR THE LAST 16
Germany edge the USA in torrential rain in Recife. After a tight first half bereft of chances, Germany eventually took the lead through a quality finish from Thomas Muller after 55 minutes. The USA - conscious of the importance of goal difference in a tight group - were cautious of throwing men forward in the latter stages of the match, but they turned down two great chances in the final few minutes that could have salvaged a point from the game. Firstly Alejandro Bedoya failed to convert a flowing American break, and then Clint Dempsey missed the target with a free header from 5-yards-out. Portugal's win over Ghana means that the USA qualify for the last 16 thanks to their superior goal difference.
90' FULL TIME
It is all over in Recife and despite losing, the USA have qualified for the last 16 on goal difference thanks to Portugal's 2-1 win over Ghana.
90' DEMPSEY HEADER!
The USA could have had two goals in a minute! Clint Dempsey rises the highest at the back post but his header drifts over the bar.
90' WHAT A BREAK!
Germany are caught on the counter-attack and some great football eventually ends with a great chance for Alejandro Bedoya but his shot is blocked.
90' SCHURRLE LOOKING TO MAKE AN IMPACT
Andre Schurrle runs dangerously at the USA defence but his drilled shot is blocked.
88' THE USA HOLDING ON
The USA have seemingly abandoned their bid for a draw and they have turned their attention to ensuring that they do not concede any more goals, but Germany are refusing to settle for 1-0. They nearly add to their tally but Philipp Lahm fails to pick out any of a number of well-placed German shirts after finding himself in acres of space on the right-hand side of the pitch.
85' CLINT OFF TARGET
Clint Dempsey has a rare chance to influence this game but his ball towards Jermaine Jones is placed well behind the run of his teammate.
82' THE USA CELEBRATE!
The USA fans in the stadium are cheering but not because the Stars and Stripes are level; news has filtered through of Portugal's goal which has surely confirmed the USA's place in the last 16.
81' HOWEDES FAILS TO MAKE IT TWO
Jerome Boateng attempts a long throw-in from the right, the ball drops to Benedikt Howedes at the back post but his tame effort fails to trouble Tim Howard.
77' GERMANY CHANGE
Joachim Low makes an interestingly attacking change with Bastian Schweinsteiger - who tends to sit quite deep in midfield - being replaced with the more attack-minded Mario Gotze.
74' NASTY COLLISION
The USA finally break forward but a nasty collision between two American players - Jermaine Jones and Alejandro Bedoya - stops the attack.
71' CORNER KICK
The USA - who have hardly had an attacking threat in this second half - have an opportunity to test Manuel Neuer from a corner but Graham Zusi's cross is wasteful.
68' RAIN CONTINUES TO FALL IN RECIFE
Mesut Ozil attempts a cute through ball to Thomas Muller but the pass runs out of play on this slippery surface.
65' NEUER ALERT
Clint Dempsey chests the ball to Michael Bradley whose first time pass to Jermaine Jones slices open the German defence but Manuel Neuer does brilliantly to race off his line and clear the danger.
62' USA CHASE SHADOWS
The USA cannot get near the ball at the moment as Germany dictate possession.
59' GERMANY FIND THEIR STRIDE
Germany have their chests pumped out as they begin to really dominate this game.
55' GOOOAAALLL!!! GERMANY!
Germany work a short corner and Tim Howard can only parry a Benedikt Howedes header away to the edge of the box where Mr Reliable, Thomas Muller, is there to curl the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
53' GERMAN GREATS COMBINE
Bastian Schweinsteiger floats a ball over to Miroslav Klose who had beaten the offside trap but unusually for him, the prolific German striker fails to direct his header on target.
51' GERMANY ON TOP
The start of the second half has mirrored the start of the first so far; Germany are dominating possession but are struggling to warm Tim Howard's gloves.
47' GONZALEZ THE GREAT
Jerome Boateng lifts in a cross from the right, Mesut Ozil looks certain to score but Omar Gonzalez defends brilliantly to keep the score at 0-0.
46' AWAY WE GO
The second half is under way. Will both sides settle for the draw which will send them through to the last 16?
45' GOALLESS IN RECIFE
Germany started strongly and they bossed the opening exchanges without really testing Tim Howard. However, the USA grew into the game and in the later stages of the first half they managed to expose a slow German defence, especially on the counter-attack. A draw would send both teams through to the last 16, so if the score remains the same both Ghana and Portugal will be heading home despite their result in Brasilia.
45' HALF TIME
The referee has blown to end a tight first half in Recife.
44' SOLID DEFENDING
DaMarcus Beasley and Graham Zusi exchange passes on the left wing, the ball eventually drops at the feet of Brad Davis who is dispossessed by Per Mertesacker.
41' CORNER KICK
Graham Zusi whips in a ball to the back post but Michael Bradley fails to get a head on it and the ball rolls out for a goal kick.
39' POOR FROM PODOLSKI
Mats Hummels steps forward from the back and plays a perfectly weighted ball to Lukas Podolski who then fails to find Thomas Muller in the box.
37' HOWARD THE ROCK
Mesut Ozil cuts inside from the right and tests Tim Howard with a low left footed strike, but the American keeper makes a fine save in testing conditions.
34' GREAT BALL
Michael Bradley picks out Jermaine Jones who had made a great run in behind the German defence but the American midfielder fails to control the ball.
31' SAFE HANDS
Toni Kroos tests Tim Howard with an effort from 25-yards-out but the Everton keeper makes a routine save.
28' REF GETS GERMANY OUT OF JAIL
Fabian Johnson breaks clear down the right and pulls the ball back to Jermaine Jones who is preparing to shoot, but just before he can pull the trigger he is tackled by the referee! Great defending from the Uzbekistan official.
25' HUMMELS DENIES BRADLEY
Fabian Johnson threads a ball through to Michael Bradley who tries to tee the ball up for a volley, but Mats Hummels is there to pinch it away.
23' ZUSI SO CLOSE!
The USA again threaten on the break; Jermaine Jones carries the ball from the edge of his own box deep into Germany's half, Clint Dempsey then sweeps it wide to Graham Zusi whose dipping effort from 20-yards-out only narrowly misses the target.
20' GREAT RUN
Fabian Johnson goes marauding forward from right-back and is shocked not to win a free kick after being brought down by Mats Hummels.
17' GONZALEZ JUSTIFIES INCLUSION
Germany are starting to turn the screw but the USA, led by Omar Gonzalez who is in inspired form, are managing to keep them at bay.
14' GREAT CHALLENGE!
Philipp Lahm works the ball out wide to Jerome Boateng who delivers another great cross aimed at Thomas Muller, but Omar Gonzalez denies the Germans with a great tackle.
12' YELLOW CARD
The USA have a great chance to break but Benedikt Howedes commits a professional foul on Fabian Johnson and he is rightly shown a yellow card.
10' WHAT A CHANCE!
The USA are caught trying to play an offside trap, there are a number of Germans queuing up to put the ball into the net but Per Mertesacker gets in the way of Thomas Muller and the chance is wasted.
8' CHANCE FOR GERMANY
Lukas Podolski fizzes the ball in from the left, Thomas Muller comes sliding in but Tim Howard gathers for the USA.
5' OFFSIDE
Germany have dominated so far, but the USA finally look to get the ball forward with a ball over the top aimed at Clint Dempsey but the Seattle Sounders striker is flagged for offside.
3' MULLER CHANCE!
Mesut Ozil twists in the box and feeds the ball out wide to Jerome Boateng, his inch perfect cross finds Thomas Muller who mistimes his volley and the USA clear.
2' GERMANY START STRONGLY
Germany have not given the ball away since kicking off; they look so competent in possession.
1' AWAY WE GO
It is absolutely pouring it down in Recife, but the game is under way.
0' USA MAKE TWO CHANGES
The USA have also made two changes; Omar Gonzalez and Brad Davis have replaced Geoff Cameron and Alejandro Bedoya.
0' GOTZE AND KHEDIRA MISS OUT
Despite scoring against Ghana, Mario Gotze has been dropped to the bench and has been replaced by Lukas Podolski. Bastian Schweinsteiger has also been brought into the side in replace of Sami Khedira.
0' GERMANY ELEVEN
Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Per Mertesacker, Mats Hummels, Benedikt Howedes, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos, Lukas Podolski and Thomas Muller.
0' USA STARTING LINE UP

0' USA IMPRESS
The USA fans have travelled in their thousands to support the Stars and Stripes in Brazil, and so far they have not been disappointed. The second-best supported team at this year's World Cup began their campaign with an impressive 2-1 victory over Ghana, and they came within seconds of making it two wins from two against Portugal but were denied by a late Silvestre Varela header. The Americans have impressed with an energetic and disciplined brand of football which is spearheaded by their assured captain, Clint Dempsey.
0' CLASSY GERMANY
As ever, Germany have turned up at the World Cup with a squad capable of challenging for the trophy. Joachim Lowe's young and talented side blitzed Portugal in their opening game with a scintillating display, and they played their part in a hugely entertaining 2-2 draw with Ghana in their second fixture. With Muller, Podolski and Klose all firing in the goals, an abundance of creativity in midfield and a solid defensive line, Germany have established themselves as one of the teams to beat in Brazil.
0' A POINT ENOUGH FOR BOTH SIDES
A draw tonight would guarantee both sides a place in the last 16 of the tournament, although with the second placed team likely to face the dangerous Belgians in the next round, Jurgen Klinsmann may be tempted to push for a win against his beloved Germany.
0' GOLDEN BOY
Thomas Muller is aiming to become the first player to win the Golden Boot in consecutive tournaments; the Bayern Munich marksman won the award in 2010 with five goals, and he has already registered three goals from two games in Brazil so far.
0' LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
Tonight's game takes place in Recife on the Atlantic Coast at the Itaipava Arena.
0' REF WATCH
Tonight's referee, Ravshan Irmatov, is from Uzbekistan. His assistants are Abdukhamidullo Rasulov who is also from Uzbekistan, and Bakhadyr Kochkarov who is from Kyrgyzstan. The fourth official, Neant Alioum, is from Cameroon.
