Nigeria vs. Argentina
Minute Commentary
There are jubilant scenes in Porto Alegre as both sides progress to the knockout stages. Nigeria did brilliantly to twice level as a clinical Ahmed Musa brace cancelled out Messi's early strike and brilliant set-piece. The winner for Argentina coming from Rojo five minutes into the second half. As they did four years ago Argentina win their first three group games without playing particularly well – Messi is the difference. He is silencing his critics who accused him of failing to deliver on the world stage. Well delivering is exactly what he is doing in this tournament. Messi and Co will more than likely avoid France in the next round and face the runners-up in group F. Nigeria it is who will have the more difficult clash.
The referee blows for full time... although the whistle is barely heard above the singing of the Argentina fans - it's an incredible atmosphere. The game ends Nigeria 2 Argentina 3.
Ambrose nearly snatched an equaliser – he showed a touch of real quality to cut back inside and lose his marker on the edge of the box, with clear sight on goal he let fly but could only rattle the side-netting. Mascherano strikes from distance, ignoring two players strewn on the halfway line following a nasty collision. The Nigerian keeper is equal to it though showing a safe pair of hands to collect the strike.
Emenike drills a low cross into the six-yard box. It initially evades everyone before Mascherano casually clears. Nigeria are the side pushing for the next goal but Di Maria is put clear though on goal – his rather lethargic strike just inside the box is palmed away by Enyeama.
Nigeria make another change as Odemwingie is replaced by Uche Nwofor. The man coming off did not look happy, which is odd.
Musa, on a hat-trick, is found by Emenike inside the area, he cuts inside before unleashing a strike on goal, Zabaleta denies him with a brilliant block.
Two quick fire Nigeria set-pieces come to nothing after poor delivery. Musa blasts a first-time effort well over the bar after the ball found him on the edge of the area. Pressure from Mascherano meant he had to get that one away quickly. Lavezzi and Di Maria then work a training ground free-kick with a scoop over the wall catching out the Nigeria defence – Enyeama gets enough on Lavezzi's strike to clear.
Argentina have lost some of their attacking threat since Messi departed but they're keeping the ball well – Lavezzi bursts to the byline but he was too quick for everyone – his square ball was played into empty space as the Argentinean strikers failed to gamble on the cross.
Higuain holds up play well and spots the run of Di Maria out on the left as Argentina break, only for Yobo to step in and snatch it off him. Argentina force their 10th corner of the game but the attempted one-two on the edge of the box breaks down.
Michael Uchebo has replaced the injured Babatunde for Nigeria, with the Super Eagles seemingly cruising through in second place in the group thanks to Iran losing in the other group game.
Messi will have to settle for the brace – the Argentinean magician is replaced by Ricardo Alvarez and protected for the knockout stages.
Nigeria are packing the midfield as Argentina play it around from front to back. A wonderful play built from defence nearly hands Messi his hat-trick – the square ball played into the six-yard box was just behind him. The game is stretched now as Nigeria stream up-field on the counter attack.
The 50,000 Argentinean fans inside the stadium are in full voice now as Enyeama dives at the feet of Higuain bursting to get on the end of a perfectly weighted Messi through-ball into the six-yard box.
Ezequiel Lavezzi has had a major impact, flitting between the lines and giving the Argentina attack some pace and directness that they were missing with Sergio Aguero up top. A deflection took Lavezzi's cross away from Angel di Maria moments ago, but the PSG man is linking up brightly with Lionel Messi too.
Argentina respond instantly once again. A corner is met by the head of Ezequiel Garay and then the knee of Marcos Rojo to deflect into the corner of the net. 3-2!
Nigeria have started the second half with a point to prove, and Ahmed Musa takes full advantage of some sloppy work by the centre-backs to cruise through into the area before slotting past Sergio Romero. 2-2!
Goals at either end of the half by Lionel Messi have given Argentina a 2-1 half-time lead against Nigeria in Porto Alegre. The game started with a bang, with first Messi hammering into the roof of the net after great work by Angel di Maria, and then Ahmed Musa responding with a curling gem of a shot beyond a despairing Sergio Romero. That made it 1-1 inside the opening four minutes, but the Argentinean fans crammed into the ground had to wait until the end of an open and exciting first half to see their team regain the lead through a delicate free-kick finish by Messi. Sergio Aguero has hobbled off for Argentina, which is a slight sour note from an otherwise spectacularly good first 45 minutes. Both of these teams are going through as it stands, with Iran needing to come from 1-0 down in the other game to knock out Nigeria.
There were indeed more goals coming for Messi! Vincent Enyeama got to that earlier free-kick, but a position slightly closer in gave Lionel Messi the platform to leave the keeper with no chance if he was to manage to get the ball up and down... and of course he did manage to do just that. It is a free-kick right out of the top-drawer, and that will be about that for the first half. 2-1 Argentina at the break.
Lionel Messi is growing into this tournament and dinks a gem of a free-kick over a leaping Nigeria wall and towards the top corner, only for Vincent Enyeama to stretch out a palm and produce an excellent save. There are more goals coming for Messi in this game, that looks almost certain.
Stephen Keshi's Nigerian outfit were dreadfully poor in their opening game against Iran, but have been much-improved since then. Well-organised in defence and with pace to burn in attack, this is a team who could spring a surprise or two later in the tournament... if they get there. They are going through as it stands.
Sergio Aguero has had a disappointing tournament, and a disappointing season in truth. He has been struggling with injuries for quite some time, and it is little surprise to see the striker hobble off the pitch to be replaced by Ezequiel Lavezzi. It is a shame to see Aguero go off, but Lavezzi's introduction may not be a bad thing for the team in the long-term. His energy and ability to drift wide could give them an element that they have been missing.
The game has settled down slightly after its breakneck start. Argentina are still in control, but Nigeria have dropped in a little bit to try and shut down the space that Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria are finding.
Vincent Enyeama takes an unintentional elbow from Gonzalo Higuain right to the 'lower stomach' as he claims a cross, and understandably the goalkeeper takes a little bit of time before getting back to his feet.
28' BACK TO THE 4-3-3
Argentina finally found a way to fit Lionel Messi into the team in a productive way during qualifying, and after tinkering with that winning formula in the first group game it appears that they are going to stick with the 4-3-3 from here on in. Angel di Maria and Fernando Gago are tasked with the leg-work either side of Javier Mascherano in the central three, with Fernando Gago and Pablo Zabaleta providing the width from full-back. It is a narrow formation that will certainly be vulnerable against some of the better counter-attacking teams later in the tournament, but the front three of Lionel Messi in behind Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero is just about as good as it gets.
Nigeria are having a whale of a time in this game, and after Emmanuel Emenike beats the offside trap it is Peter Odemwingie who drills a long-range shot over the bar. What a good game this is!
Angel di Maria slams a half cross, half shot across the face of the goal, but Lionel Messi can't quite stretch enough to get a toe to it and it fizzes wide of the far post.
A point will be enough for Nigeria to go through, while a win would see them progress ahead of Argentina... which should mean avoiding the French in the next round. However, it would take a win for Iran against Bosnia to prevent the Nigerians going through even if they lose here, and currently the Bosnians are a goal up in the other game.
Nigeria know that they may need a result in this game, so have banked on hitting Argentina with pace. However, the attacking selection has left the African side hugely exposed in defence, and Argentina are running them ragged. Lionel Messi looks in the mood, as does the silky Angel di Maria.
A horribly weak back pass leaves Vincent Enyeama forced to come off his line and beat Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain to the ball. The goalkeeper does well to put it out of play for a throw, and shows impressive restraint to just smile as he heads back between the posts... rather than tearing a strip out of his defender.
Argentina have been brilliant in the opening stages of this match, having clearly shaken off the cobwebs in their first two group games. This time Lionel Messi turns provider for Gonzalo Higuain, but the striker is closed down by the goalkeeper and he can only find the side-netting with a shot from a tight angle.
Nigeria are back on level terms thanks to a goal of the highest quality by Ahmed Musa. The Super Eagles started with intensity from the restart, working Musa into space on the left of the area, but there looked to be little danger until he stepped on to his right foot and curled an absolutely sensational shot into the far corner to draw Nigeria level. What a start to the game! 1-1!
Lionel Messi grabs his third goal in as many games to give Argentina the dream start! A beautiful through-ball by Javier Mascherano puts Angel di Maria into space inside the area, but the Real Madrid man is denied by a combination of the goalkeeper and post. Unfortunately for Vincent Enyeama, the loose ball falls to Messi, and he makes no mistake with a hammered finish into the roof of the net. 1-0!
The game is underway in Porto Alegre, where the Argentinean fans have arrived in extremely impressive numbers. It is a home atmosphere and then some!
Nigeria need only to avoid defeat against Argentina to progress into the final 16. Lionel Messi and Co are already assured of a place in the knockout stages and will win Group F with a draw. Do that and Alejandro Sabella's side will most likely avoid France and face Group E runners-up next Tuesday. Argentina went into the tournament as contenders to go all the way but, despite winning twice, have failed to impress so far. Messi has twice been called on to rescue his side, netting against Bosnia and hitting the winner to sink Iran.
With no new injury worries Alejandro Sabella could rest a few players. But it's more likely that both Sergio Aguero and Angel di Maria will start so they can find their range before the knockout stages.
Nigeria are also expected to be unchanged following a 1-0 victory against Bosnia. Victor Moses and Godfrey Oboabona are both carrying knocks which will probably keep them out of the starting 11.
