Honduras vs. Switzerland
Minute Commentary
90' HERO
Xherdan Shaqiri is the man of the night, scoring a wonderful hat-trick to take his side into the next round of the competition. The first was a stunning solo effort, holding off two defenders before curling a long-range effort into the net. The second goal was the result of a break away, with Josip Drmic providing the pass, whilst Drmic was also responsible for Shaqiri's third after a long ball. Honduras seemed to run out of ideas very quickly, whilst Switzerland could, and arguably should, have had more. An exciting tie with one of the tournament favourites awaits them, whilst Honduras head home without a point to their name. Honduras 0 - 3 Switzerland.
90' CONFIRMATION
The game is over between France and Ecuador, finishing 0 - 0. France now progress to meet Nigeria, whilst Switzerland have to play Argentina. Ecuador become the first South American side to crash out of this World Cup.
90' FULL TIME
The referee blows the whistle, and barring a near-miracle for Ecuador, Switzerland are through to the next round.
90' ADDED TIME
Three additional minutes will be played.
90' NICE TRY
Maynor Figueroa tries to power one in along the ground from 30 yards, but Benaglio is equal to it.
88' UPDATE
France and Ecuador are still locked at 0 - 0, with mere minutes left. Switzerland have got one foot in the next round.
87' SWITZERLAND CHANGE
The whole stadium is on their feet for Xherdan Shaqiri, who leaves with Blerim Dzemaili replacing him. What a day for Shaqiri, who hugs all of his colleagues on the bench in turn.
85' OFFSIDE
Switzerland are guilty of going a bit 'Arsenal' and playing too many passes before shooting. Ricardo Rodriguez is fed the ball on the overlap but the flag goes up - Admir Mehmedi should have shot instead of playing it to him.
82' TOP PLAY
Michael Lang crosses from the right, Admir Mehmedi meets it on the volley, Noel Valladares produces a great save. Good football from both teams.
80' GREAT SAVE
Top stuff Diego Benaglio. A ball from deep finds Jerry Bengtson in the box, but his header is tipped wide by the acrobatic Benaglio. The corner comes to nothing.
79' EASY
The game has lost a bit of its spark, with both sides knowing it is over as a contest. The Switzerland players are almost treating it as a warm-down.
76' CHANGES FOR BOTH
For Switzerland, Granit Xhaka departs with Michael Lang replacing him. Oscar Boniek Garcia leaves the field with Andy Najar taking his place.
74' AS IT STANDS
France look set to top the group with seven points, leaving Switzerland in second with six points. Waiting for them in the next round? Argentina. Gulp.
73' SWITZERLAND CHANGE
Haris Seferovic replaces Josip Drmic.
71' GOOOOOAAAAALLLL
XHERDAN SHAQIRI HAS HIS HAT-TRICK!!!
65' BOOKING
Wilson Palacios bundles into the back of Granit Xhaka, who goes down in some pain. Palacios is booked.
64' AMUSING
A Honduras corner is cleared as far as the edge of the box and Jorge Claros shapes to shoot, but he completely misses the ball much to the amusement of the crowd.
61' FURIOUS
Honduras chip a long ball into the box, aimed at Jerry Palacios, who goes down under a challenge from Johan Djourou. The Hondurans want a penalty and the referee says no, but you have to feel they have a case for one.
59' TOO EASY
Switzerland look as if they can tear Honduras apart at will. Admir Mehmedi has all the time in the world in the box to pick out Shaqiri, whose chipped effort is kept out well by Valladares.
57' CLOSE
Xherdan Shaqiri spots the run of Josip Drmic, who forces a smart stop from Noel Valladares from a very tight angle.
52' OFF THE LINE!
Honduras are really pressing here. Diego Benaglio rushes out to meet Jerry Bengtson, who rounds him with ease. He tries to slot the ball home, but Ricardo Rodriguez gets there just in time to clear the ball off the line.
51' NEWS FROM ELSEWHERE
Ecuador, Switzerland's main rival for progression to the next round, have just had captain Antonio Valencia sent off against France. The score remains 0 - 0 there, but that will not help the South American side.
50' STRANGE CHOICE
Jerry Bengtson has a great chance to get a goal back for Honduras, but for some reason he stoops to head the ball goalwards instead of volleying it, and as a result he misses it completely.
48' NOTHING TO REPORT
It has been a fairly slow start to the second period, with neither side being able to fashion any chances. The heat is probably playing some part in this.
46' KICK OFF
Switzerland start the second half.
46' HONDURAS CHANGE
Martin Chavez replaces Roger Espinoza.
45' IN CONTROL
Switzerland seem to have this game sewn up. Two goals from Xerdan Shaqiri, the first a curling long-range effort, the second the result of a swift counter-attack, have put the Europeans in cruise control. With Ecuador drawing with France, Switzerland are currently going through, and they don't appear in danger of losing this game to a poor Honduras side.
45' HALF TME
The referee ends the half. Honduras 0 - 2 Switzerland.
45' GOOD KEEPING
Josip Drmic makes a good run down the right and cuts in, before Valladares comes out smartly to stop him.
45' ADDED TIME
Two minutes are signalled by the referee.
43' STING LOST
That injury to Carlos Costly, and the subsequent break in play, seems to have disrupted the players. The ball is being played around midfield without purpose.
40' HONDURAS SUBSTITUTION
Jerry Palacios, older brother of Wilson, comes on for the stricken Costly.
39' INJURY
Carlos Costly limps off the field and it seems that his day, and in all likelihood his tournament, is over.
37' PRESSING
Juan Carlos Garcia loses the ball far too easily and Granit Xhaka is on it like a flash, but unfortunately his ball across the box is poor and Honduras manage to clear.
34' SLOPPY
The Hondurans just haven't got going today, and their plan always seems to have been about limiting Switzerland rather than attacking themselves. Negative football 101.
31' AT THE DOUBLE
Xherdan Shaqiri has his second of the game, as Switzerland hit Honduras on the break. The ball is played out to Josip Drmic on the left wing, and he waits before finding Shaqiri with a lovely pass. The Bayern Munich man takes one touch before slotting it past Noel Valladares. Honduras 0 - 2 Switzerland.
31' GOOOOAAAAALLLL
SWITZERLAND DOUBLE THEIR LEAD!!!
28' FLYING IN
The challenges are coming in thick and fast and it is ruining the flow of the game. Honduras don't seem confident at any point - either when in possession, or when Switzerland have the ball - and this is how they are reacting.
26' LUCKY
Diego Benaglio throws the ball straight to Oscar Boniek Garcia, whose cross evades everyone in the box. The Switzerland keeper got away with one there.
25' WARM
The conditions in Manaus could be playing a part in the slow pace of the game - reports suggest that it is 88% humidity at pitchside. Wow.
22' CLOSE
Brayan Beckeles gets on the end of a corner and volleys it goalwards, but his effort sails just wide of the post.
21' ATTEMPT
Xherdan Shaqiri tries to repeat his earlier effort, cutting inside with menace once again, but his low effort doesn't trouble Valladares.
19' GOOD MOVEMENT
Josip Drmic tries to run on to a long through ball, but the pass has too much pace on it and he cannot get there ahead of Noel Valladares.
16' NICE TRY
Granit Xhaka hits the ball hard, but the wall does its job and deflects the shot out of play. The resulting corner comes to nothing.
15' DANGEROUS
Xherdan Shaqiri tries to power past Victor Bernardez, but is tripped - Switzerland have a free kick in a good position.
14' FOULS
Both sides are being a little feisty, but the Hondurans are the ones giving away the fouls. Valon Behrami is tripped by Jerry Bengtson for the latest in a series of infringements.
12' CHANCE
Oscar Garcia sends in a free kick from deep on the right, which is cleared as far as Carlos Costly. The forward looks for the pass, but eventually his high ball is picked out of the air by Benaglio.
10' BUILD-UP
Selfish play here from Juan Carlos Garcia, who has time and space to pick out a man in the box but tries the shot instead, which rolls well wide.
8' ROUGH
Admir Mehmedi does well here, tracking back to cover his defender who had gone wandering upfield. He is bundled over by Carlos Costly and wins the foul.
6' UNSTOPPABLE GOAL
Xherdan Shaqiri, take a bow. He cuts in from the right, holds off two Honduran defenders, and curls in a brilliant shot from outside the box. Honduras 0 - 1 Switzerland.
6' GOOOOAAAALLL
SWITZERLAND ARE AHEAD!!!
4' NICE TRY
Palacios is desperately trying to impress here, attempting a shot from 45 yards on the left flank. Diego Benaglio watches it roll harmlessly wide.
3' EARLY CHANCE
Wilson Palacios gives the ball away in midfield and Switzerland break with pace. There's a bit of a scramble in the box and eventually the Hondurans are awarded a foul.
1' KICK OFF
Honduras get us underway, kicking from left to right.
0' BREAKING SWITZERLAND TEAM NEWS
Fabian Schaer replaces Steve von Bergen, who has returned home with a broken cheekbone. Senderos stays on the bench.
0' BREAKING HONDURAS TEAM NEWS
Wilson Palacios returns to the side, along with Juan Garcia, whilst Emilio Izaguirre and Luis Garrido miss out.
0' PREVIEW
The group stage of this World Cup may be drawing to a close, but there is still plenty of action to come before we hit the round of 16. Tonight we turn our attentions to Group E, where Honduras play Switzerland. These two have had mixed fortunes in the tournament so far, but both have a chance of progressing, so will be giving this their all. My name is Peter Moloney – stay with me for team news, previews, referee stats and much more.
0' PERMUTATIONS
Both Honduras and Switzerland can still qualify for the next round, but that seems unlikely in the case of the Central American side. France, who play Ecuador in tonight's other game, sit atop the group with six points, with Ecuador and Switzerland both on three but Ecuador with a better goal difference. Honduras have no points to their name, and in order to qualify would need to hope that France beat Ecuador and that they beat Switzerland by a big enough margin to overcome their -4 goal difference. Switzerland, on the other hand, know that they only need to better Ecuador's result in order to go through, or if both sides win, that they win by a big enough margin to overtake them on goal difference. Should Ecuador beat France and Switzerland beat Honduras by huge margins, there is a chance they could both go through ahead of France, but that seems unlikely.
0' HONDURAS TEAM NEWS
Wilson Palacios, who was sent off against France in the first game, is likely to return to the side after suspension with Jorge Claros the man to miss out. Winger Andy Najar and defender Juan Carlos Garcia are also pushing for inclusion in the starting line-up, while Carlos Costly will be the main threat up front – having scored Honduras' first goal in a World Cup since 1982 in the defeat to Ecuador.
0' SWITZERLAND TEAM NEWS
Defender Steve von Bergen suffered a fractured cheekbone in their last game against France and has travelled home. Philippe Senderos, who looked decidedly shaky as von Bergen's replacement in that game, could lose out on a starting place to Fabian Schaer. Midfielder Blerim Dzemaili came off the bench to score in that game, and could be given the opportunity to impress from the start.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Argentinian Nestor Pitana is the referee for this game. The 39-year-old has been an international referee since 2010, and since then has been in charge of some high profile games such as Peru vs Colombia in a World Cup qualifier, and several games in the Copa Libertadores. Pinata was an actor before he turned to refereeing.
0' FACTS AND STATS
These two sides have met in the World Cup before – a goalless draw in the final group game of the 2010 World Cup – exactly four years ago to the day. With that result, Switzerland finished third and Honduras fourth in their group - Switzerland will certainly be hoping that isn't the outcome today. The game is taking place in the jungle city of Manaus and the humidity could play into the hands of Honduras, who are more used to it than their opponents.
0' FORM GUIDE
These sides come into this tie in distinctly different form – Honduras have only won one game in their last nine, whereas Switzerland's defeat to France was only their second defeat in 20 games. Honduras also hold the record for playing the most matches in a World Cup without winning, whilst the five goals that Switzerland conceded against France was as many as their last five World Cup games put together.
