Greece vs. Ivory Coast
Minute Commentary
90' THE CRUELLEST BLOW
It's the cruellest end for Ivory Coast's golden generation, as a penalty with almost the last kick of the game from Georgios Samaras sent Greece through to the second round for the first time in their history. It was a brave but ultimately correct call by referee Carlos Vera as Sio felled Samaras in the box as he was about to pull the trigger - and the forward tucked it beyond Barry into the bottom right-hand corner. Greece had gone in at half-time ahead and looked like they might double their lead as they continually hit an increasingly desperate Ivory Coast on the break at will. However the Elephants looked to have saved their skin when Wilfried Bony equalised with 16 minutes to go. A trip by Sio two minutes into injury-time changed everything though and Greece now face Costa Rica in the World Cup second round - who would have bet on that before the tournament began.
90' FULL-TIME! GREECE ARE THROUGH!
Ivory Coast come forward straight from kick-off but it's a half-hearted effort on goal from Yaya Toure that flashes wide and the referee blows for full-time! The cruellest way possible to exit the tournament! Greece are through to the second round for the first time in history but you have to feel for their opponents.
90' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Georgios Samaras is the man charged with deciding the fate of his side. He steps up and... scores! Barry went the right way but it was too far into the corner for him. Utter, utter dejection for Ivory Coast! That's surely it for their hopes.
90' PENALTY TO GREECE!
Incredible scenes! A cross comes in from the left towards Samaras in the area; he gets ready to pull the trigger but is felled by Sio! The referee points at the spot! Ivory Coast look utterly devastated! Trust me this really does warrant so many explanation marks!
90' GREECE CAUGHT AT THE BACK!
Greece win a free-kick deep in the Ivory Coast half but as it's cleared there's acres of space for Kalou to run into. He looks for Toure to his right but the Manchester City midfielder is crowded out; he wins the ball back but can only fire a tame shot at goal.
89' TIME RUNNING OUT
Greece are having to really up the tempo now and Georgios Samaras burst down the right, but his cross is blocked by Aurier - the ball deflected off the Greek forward last.
88' SO CLOSE GREECE!
Squeaky bum time for Ivory Coast! Salpingidis gets to the byline on the right and puts in a low cross right across the front of goal that miraculously doesn't come off anyone and go into the goal - Barry was beaten by it.
84' GREECE CLOSE AGAIN!
Christodoulopoulos has been trying these all night and again comes close with another effort from outside the area, it dipping just wide of the post.
83' IVORY COAST SUBSTITUTION
Ivory Coast make another change as Gervinho comes off to be replaced by Giovanni Sio. Meanwhile Colombia have extended their lead over Japan - 3-1 there now.
80' BARRY NEARLY CAUGHT OUT
Torosidis nearly catches Barry napping as his cross into the area almost sneaks in at the near post. The goalkeeper's positioning was suspect there and he almost paid the price!
78' CHANGES AT BOTH ENDS
Georgios Karagounis has put in a good stint tonight but he's taken off, to be replaced by Theofanis Gekas. Ivory Coast meanwhile bring on Ismael Diomande for Didier Drogba.
76' GREECE DESPERATE
Greece are going to have to attack again - and they do. Cholevas puts in a cross but it's put out for a corner by the Ivory Coast defence. Karagounis puts the corner in from the left and Samaras gets his head to it, but it's easily saved by Barry.
74' GOOOAAALLL!!!
The pendulum swings back to Ivory Coast! The green shirts surge forward, but this time with precision, and it's Wilfried Bony on the overlap who takes the pass from Gervinho and slots past Glykos! 1-1 and now it's the Africans who look to be going through!
73' BAMBA FIRES WIDE
A corner from Yaya Toure from the left finds Bamba in the area, but his shot isn't on target.
71' FINE RUN FROM CHOLEVAS!
Jose Cholevas surges up-field! I'm not sure why the full-back's there but he's making great progress, until a desperate Serey Die brings him down. It's a deserved yellow card for the midfielder, and Christodoulopoulos isn't far away from the resulting free-kick, 20 yards out.
68' KARAGOUNIS HITS THE WOODWORK!
Now this would have been something! Greece counter again, but rather than work play further towards the Ivory Coast area, Karagounis simply looks up and thunders a 30-yard drive that cannons off the cross bar! Barry was totally beaten there. Ivory Coast come up the other end but the promising move is charged down on the edge of the area.
67' KALOU NOT FAR AWAY
Good effort by Solomon Kalou as he does excellently to cut between two defenders out wide, before whipping in a shot with his right foot - which curls just wide of the post.
66' BONY LACKING CONTROL
Wilfried Bony is in the area but he can't control the cross in from Solomon Kalou on the left. There was a chance on goal for the taking there otherwise.
65' GREECE DANGER ON THE COUNTER
Greece are starting to pick off Ivory Coast when the ball's lost in the European side's half. Lazaros Christodoulopoulos again charges up the field, but he's isolated this time and eventually is crowded out. Nervous times for the Elephants.
63' KALOU CYNICALLY HALTS GREEK BREAK
Solomon Kalou is lucky there's another man back with him here as he cuts down Christodoulopoulos on the edge of the area as Greece break at pace. It's just a yellow for the former Chelsea man - could've been worse. Karagounis takes it but rebounds off the wall before Torisidis puts the follow-up wide.
61' CORNERS AT BOTH ENDS
Greece have a corner from that Barry save but they can't make anything of it. Ivory Coast come up the other end and win a corner themselves. Wilfried Bony comes on for Cheick Tiote and takes up a position in the box, but the ball gets nowhere near him.
58' GOOD SALPINGDIS EFFORT
Salpingdis has Ivory Coast hearts in mouths as he fires in a good effort, but Barry does well to save.
57' GREAT DEFENDING FROM MANOLAS
Manolas is keeping Greece ahead here, twice reacting to sudden surges of pace by Ivory Coast to prevent one-on-ones with the goalkeeper. The second challenge on Drogba is at the expense of a corner, but Greece manage to deal with it. Meanwhile Colombia have restored their lead.
53' GREECE GO CLOSE TO SECOND!
Christodoulopoulos has a good chance to make it two for Greece as he does brilliantly to turn Bamba on the edge of the area and fire at goal, unfortunately skewing the ball wide of the post.
52' IVORY COAST CORNER
A corner for Ivory Coast on the left as Boka's cross is deflected out. It's aimed towards the far post by Yaya Toure, but Greece clear.
50' GERVINHO RUNS OUT OF SPACE
This is a bit more like the Arsenal Gervinho, as he puts his head down and piles forward but can only wind up getting lost in a sea of white shirts.
49' TIOTE GOES CLOSE
Greece have a corner but Didier Drogba manages to clear - he was fouled in the box too. Up come Ivory Coast at pace through Yaya Toure; the ball's eventually squared to Tiote who tests Glykos from range - it's well saved.
46' SECOND PERIOD RESUMES
We are back under way in the second period with no changes on either side. Greece you feel are about to 'Παρκάρετε το λεωφορείο'.
45' IVORY COAST GOING OUT?
It may have been a dull half but for Greece it couldn't have gone much better. A terrible mistake by Cheick Tiote with a weak pass to his defence was cut out by the Greece attack, allowing Samaris to score and put his side into a lead that could see them go through to the second round. Ivory Coast have looked more dangerous but it's been a poor display by them, with a lack of quality in the final third, and they've looked dejected since Samaris' opener. The half-time team talk will be everything, unless the Elephants' golden generation want to exit at the group stage for a third World Cup finals in a row.
45' HALF-TIME WHISTLE BLOWN
The referee blows his whistle for half-time. Greece are just 45 minutes away from their first ever appearance in the World Cup second round - so long as Japan don't score again. Ivory Coast need to pick it up here.
45' JAPAN INCREASE THE PRESSURE
Interesting news over in our other Group C match as Japan draw level with Colombia. If the Japanese score another and things stay the same here, that would put them through behind the South Americans.
45' TOURE FIGHTS BACK
Ivory Coast almost hit back straight away as Yaya Toure cuts his way into the box, but his shot takes a big deflection off a Greek defender which takes the pace out of it and makes it easy for Glykos to gather.
42' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Potentially massive goal! A terrible error in the Ivory Coast defence as Tiote's pass to Kolo Toure is too short, allowing Georgios Samaras to pounce, and find substitute Samaris who slots home. There are few teams who know how to defend a lead better than Greece - time to park the bus.
40' TOO MUCH INTRICACY FROM IVORY COAST
Ivory Coast are still lacking quality in the final third and they prove it once again as intricate play brings up to the Greece penalty area, only for a back heel from Gervinho to Kalou to go awry. Moments later Manolas has to be alert to cut out a ball in from the byline, with Ivory Coast attackers lining up.
37' DROGBA BOOKED
Barry can only punch the ball clear as Torosidis puts a teasing ball into the box. Moments later Didier Drogba goes into the book for a strong challenge on Samaris.
36' IVORY COAST COUNTER BREAKS DOWN
As lovely as it is to have Didier Drogba starting, he isn't the best man for the job for moments such as here, when Ivory Coast are breaking at pace and need someone in the middle to keep play moving quickly. Still strong but lacking pace, I wonder if Wilfried Bony might've done better here as the ball is lost.
34' KARAGOUNIS TO SHOOT
Old man Karagounis steps up to hit the free-kick and he drives it in low... straight to Boubacar Barry.
33' GREECE HIT WOODWORK!
Wow where did this come from!? Greece attack at surprising speed and the ball's worked to Cholevas who rattles the crossbar with a thunderous shot from the edge of the area! Ivory Coast look just as rattled and Samaras is fouled as he tries to pounce on the rebound. Free-kick right on the edge of the area.
32' CORNER TO IVORY COAST
Ivory Coast are still looking the more threatening and Arthur Boka crosses a low ball in towards his man in the area that's only diverted by a sliding Greece defender. Corner to the Elephants on the left, but it's cleared at the near post.
27' GREECE IN NO HURRY
Only two goals in four matches so far today in a tournament that's been averaging nearly three per game - someone should tell these two they're letting the competition down. This is the least urgent performance by a team who have to win I've ever seen from Greece.
24' VINTAGE YAYA
Ivory Coast nearly create a goalscoring opportunity as Yaya Toure powers through the midfield before slipping it through to Didier Drogba - it's a little beyond the talisman's 36-year-old legs though. However, Greece do then bring Karnezis off - bad news indeed. Glykos has come on.
22' GAME STRUGGLING TO GET GOING
Karnezis has opted to stay on the field. It's quite a flat atmosphere in the stadium if I'm being honest; although in fairness to the crowd there have been so many stoppages already that there's been no real rhythm established yet.
19' ANOTHER GREECE INJURY!
Greece have another injury worry! The goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis needs treatment on his back by the looks of things - two substitutions in the first 20 minutes is not what Fernando Santos needs. Meanwhile Colombia have gone 1-0 up against Japan, which changes precisely nothing here.
17' SPACE FOR GREECE TO ATTACK
Christodoulopoulos finds himself in space in the Ivory Coast half but a lack of pace allows the Ivory Coast defence to close him down. He spreads it right to Salpingidis however, whose cross is over the heads of everyone in the box.
14' TOROSIDIS CAUSES PROBLEMS
Greece give Boubacar Barry a similar scramble at the other end, as a teasing Torosidis cross is smothered on the ground by the Ivory Coast stopper under pressure.
13' THE ELEPHANTS STAMPEDING ON THE COUNTER
Greece come forward but a cross-field bar is cut out by Serge Aurier and Ivory Coast counter at speed. Yaya Toure shows his typical strength to hold off a challenge and go wide before whipping in a dangerous low cross, which Karnezis gathers amidst a flurry of attacking studs.
12' KONE INJURED
There's bad news for Greece - who aren't blessed with quality attacking options - when Panagiotis Kone goes down clutching his leg. Kone's been a sole creative spark for Greece this tournament but he's heading off here to be replaced by Andreas Samaris of Olympiakos.
9' GERVINHO EARLY INVOLVEMENT
Ivory Coast continue to look to attack and Greece are struggling to deal with it. Gervinho's set away down the right but Manolas manages to get back to clear for a corner. The ball in from the right is cleared by Greece, but they're going to have to watch the pace of Gervinho.
5' GREECE FREE-KICK
A foul by Bamba on Karagounis gives Greece a free-kick 35 yards out. The old man dusts himself off while Kone whips the ball into the box, but Didier Drogba - the other old man on the field - is back there to head clear. He was fouled as well so it's a free-kick to Ivory Coast.
3' EARLY SURGE FROM TIOTE
Ivory Coast don't seem to be in any particular mood to keep it tight. Cheick Tiote surges into the Greece half and gets up to the penalty area before crossing it to Solomon Kalou - who can't get to the ball.
1' WE'RE UNDER WAY!
Here we go then! Greece are wearing all-white with a blue trim and are playing from left to right. Ivory Coast are in all-green. Just a reminder to you all - Greece need to win, Ivory Coast only need to draw. Both sides basically need to forget how they usually play football.
0' DROGBA STARTS
Didier Drogba is starting for the first time for Ivory Coast in these finals, while both Toures are also in the line-up following the tragic death of their brother. Mitroglou is back on the bench following his early substitution last time out.

0' WELCOME TO FORTALEZA
While everyone else has been plundering goals – we're well over 100 for the competition now – Greece have doggedly stuck to their defensive guns; however the Euro 2004 champions will have to buck their instinct tonight if they have any hope of getting through Group C. Only a win will do against Ivory Coast, who themselves should need just a point to progress to the second round alongside likely group-toppers Colombia. Unfortunately for Greece, the stats do not bode well – they have scored just once in World Cup finals history. Fernando Santos leaves his post as coach after this tournament, but he won't want to be clearing his desk just yet.
0' GREECE WITH FAMILIAR PROBLEMS
Of the two sides here in Fortaleza, Greece are definitely the favourites to exit the tournament. However, coach Santos can point to Euro 2012 and his side's shock win over Russia as an example of how his side can dig in when it matters. Their previous fixture against Japan – a drab 0-0 – was as bad as anything this tournament's seen though; Celtic fans will be all too familiar with their chief attacking threat Georgios Samaras' performances – exciting one moment, hapless the next. Kostas Mitroglou, meanwhile, limped off after just 35 minutes of the previous game. Inspiration has to come from somewhere – it's just hard to know where that might be.
0' THE END FOR IVORY COAST'S GOLDEN GENERATION?
The Ivory Coast camp has been overshadowed in recent days by news of the death of Ibrahim Toure, the brother of Yaya and Kolo. It's to the two players eternal credit that they've opted to stay on with The Elephants as Sabri Lamouchi's side seek to avoid an exit at the group stages of the World Cup finals for a third consecutive time. A first round departure would be an anticlimactic end to what's been the country's undisputed golden generation – with the likes of Didier Drogba, the Toure brothers and Didier Zokora all playing in what's likely to be their final World Cup. However they looked good despite going down to Colombia 2-1 in their previous match – Gervinho in particular outstanding – and a point here should be well within their reach.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Both sides are missing players through suspension - Greece's Kostas Katsouranis was sent off against Japan, while Didier Zokora has picked up two bookings for Ivory Coast. Veteran Georgios Karagounis could step up to the starting line-up in what could be the 37 year-old's last ever appearance for his country. For Ivory Coast, Kolo Toure and Didier Drogba may well be recalled; winger Didier Ya Konan is a doubt after missing the defeat by Colombia because of a knee injury.
