Japan vs. Colombia
Minute Commentary
Colombia eased to top spot in Group C with a 4-1 win over Japan but tonight was all about Faryd Mondragon. The veteran stopper came on with just five minutes to go to become the World Cup's oldest ever player at 43, breaking Roger Milla's record. Earlier in the game Colombia took a 1-0 lead thanks to a Juan Cuadrado penalty after 18 minutes, against the run of play. With a second left of the first half Shinji Okazaki got onto Keisuke Honda's cross to head past David Ospina. In the second half Colombia came out and after ten minutes were back in front - Jackson Martinez grabbed his first competitive goal in five years. Japan should have levelled through Okubo, but he fired over from five yards. On 82 minutes Martinez sealed the win with a lovely finish after a superb through ball from Rodriguez. Mondragon then came on to cheers from around the ground - a truly amazing moment in a fascinating World Cup. Rodriguez rounded the goals off with a contender for goal of the competition. The Monaco man confused Maya Yoshida before chipping Eiji Kawashima with ease. Full time and it's 4-1, Colombia play Uruguay in the next round.
The referee blows his whistle to signal the end of the game, shortly after the biggest cheer of the game after Faryd Mondragon saved from Yoichiro Kakitani.
James Rodriguez, take a bow. Take a bow. What an exquisite goal this is. The 22-year-old Monaco playmaker produces some brilliant footwork to ease his way past Maya Yoshida before sending a deft flick over Eiji Kawashima. That really is a goal of the highest class - his third in three at the World Cup.
Santiago Arias tries to make it 4-1 which would really put the icing on the cake, but his effort is always rising.
What a moment we have here. Faryd Mondragon is coming on for David Ospina to become the oldest ever player in World Cup history at 43, breaking Roger Milla's previous record. He was in Colombia's squad at USA '94!
Colombia score and are going through with a 100% record! JACKSON MARTINEZ gets his second of the game after latching onto a superb through ball from James Rodriguez. He then cut inside in the area, before curling beyond Eiji Kawashima.
Colombia look tired now, as do Japan. As the leaders break, Pablo Armero can't quite get the pace on his through ball to Jackson Martinez, who busts a lung to get forward into acres of space.
Yasuyuki Konno gets forward well for Japan and gets a shot off. It's deflected but it straight at Ospina who catches it with his grateful hands.
Colombia have a chance to kill the game off but James Rodriguez's cross is a poor one and Jackson Martinez stands no chance of reaching it - wasteful really as it was a decent chance to double the lead.
How has he missed?! Yoshito Okubo really should have made it 2-2, but instead he blasts Atsuto Uchida's powerful low cross over the bar from close range after beating his man to the ball.
Keisuke Honda lines up a free kick after Guarin fouls and is booked. The AC Milan midfielder hits the ball in a Ronaldo-esque manner but it's quite central, allowing Ospina to palm away.
Eder Balanta is a lucky man to still be on this pitch. The referee obviously hasn't seen his elbow on Shinji Okazaki or he'd be brandishing a red card. It's a terrible challenge while shielding the ball. He knew exactly where the Japanese player was.
Japan have a great chance to hit back almost straight away as they work the ball down the left wing. It's crossed by Yuto Nagatomo and Makoto Hasebe just misses the ball after David Ospina flapped at it.
Well, that miss doesn't matter now as JACKSON MARTINEZ puts his side back in the lead with a lovely finish past Eiji Kawashima. It was brilliant play by substitute Rodriguez to play the ball into the path of Martinez. That's his first competitive goal for Colombia since October 2009.
Colombia really should be back in front as a free kick bounces across the face of goal and falls to Carlos Carbonero. The midfielder could only loop Rodriguez's ball in over the bar though - great chance for his first international goal.
Colombia win a corner which is played short by Rodriguez. He receives it back and plays in a superb whipped cross which is headed away. It's then floated back in but as Pablo Armero takes it down he's flagged for offside.
Colombia kick us off in the second half and have made two changes. Juan Quintero and Juan Cuadrado go off as Carlos Carbonero and James Rodriguez come on. Rodriguez should give the South Americans that boost they need.
Colombia and Japan went in level at the break after a goal in the last second of the half from attacking midfielder Shinji Okazaki. Japan found themselves behind after an 18th-minute penalty from Juan Cuadrado. Yasuyuki Konno clumsily brought down Adrian Ramos and Pedro Proenca had no option but to point to the spot. Japan had looked better up until that point and had a few chances but couldn't beat David Ospina. Colombia had a golden chance to make it two shortly before half-time but couldn't find the net. Half time and it's 1-1.
Japan are level! It's SHINJI OKAZAKI who heads into the corner of the net just as the ref blows his whistle for half time. That's a blow to Jose Pekerman's team talk for Colombia.
There will be one additional minute in Cuiaba.
A clumsy ball from Makoto Hasebe on the edge of the Colombian box allows Fredy Guarin to roam forward. This starts an attacking spell for Colombia, who get the ball into the box a couple of times with a few menacing crosses. Unforutnately for them nothing troubles Eiji Kawashima.
After a brief spell of midfield play without any real attacks, the ball is sprayed out wide to Atsuto Uchida. He lofts a cross to the far post, where Yoshito Okubo is waiting and tries an audacious overhead kick which flies a foot or so over the bar.
It's a fifth corner of the game for Japan and this time it's sent into the box by Honda. It's headed away and as Jackson Martinez tries to set up a counter, he loses the ball, before Carlos Valdes concedes a free kick in a very dangerous area.
Colombia get into a decent position and Juan Cuadrado lays the ball back to Juan Quintero on the edge of the box. He quite clearly takes a dive as he goes to dribble round his marker. Pedro Proenca opts to play on though, rather than book him.
Ospina is finally forced into action as he dives across the floor to punch wide Shinji Kagawa's low effort. The United man replicated the run and shot from Neymar last night, but Ospina was alert to the danger.
Keisuke Honda has a good reputation from dead balls, but tonight he's had the chance to test David Ospina in the Colombian goal with two hazardously-placed free kicks. Each time he's hit the wall - disappointing.
Japan immediately get back up the other end and look to grab a leveller. They win a corner after good work down the right from Atsuto Uchida. You have to say, it is a slightly undeserved lead for Los Cafeteros, but it's quite hard to comprehend why the defender lunged in when Ramos was going away from goal.
Colombia have the lead and it's the impressive JUAN CUADRADO who smashes the penalty down the middle giving Eiji Kawashima no chance of saving it. As it stands, Colombia have a 100% record and Japan are flying home.
Colombia have a penalty! Yasuyuki Konno trips Adrian Ramos after the striker had taken the ball away from him.
Despite the good start from Colombia, it's Japan who are on top after the first 13 minutes. They've had a couple of decent half-chances but nothing clear-cut. A cross from Shinji Kagawa is dealt with well before the ball is fired wide of the goal.
Japan have a chance but Colombia have men back. Yuto Nagatomo plays over a superb ball to Yoshito Okubo, who takes the ball down well. He turns in the box, twice, before seeing his snapshot blocked. The Colombians then clear their lines.
Makoto Hasebe gets away from his man before being felled by Fredy Guarin. Japan have a free kick in a dangerous position. Keisuke Honda stands over the ball.
Unsurprisingly, Colombia have started like lightning and are on the front foot, despite coach Jose Pekerman making numerous changes ahead of the game.
Japan get the game underway and have work to do. They need to win by a couple of goals and hope Ivory Coast don't win. They're in all-blue and are kicking from right to left in this first half.
The teams are out of the tunnel and line up on the pitch for the national anthems.
Full line-up: Ospina, Arias, Valdes, Balanta, Armero, Cuadrado, Mejia, Guarin, Quintero, Martinez, Ramos. Subs: Aguilar, Zuniga, Carbonero, Gutierrez, Ibarbo, Mondragon, Rodriguez, Sanchez, Vargas, Yepes, Zapata.
Full line-up: Kawashim, Uchida, Yoshida, Konno, Nagatomo, Aoyama, Hasebe, Okazaki, Honda, Kagawa, Okubo. Subs: Endo, Gonda, Inoha, Kakitani, Kiyotake, Morishige, Nishikawa, Osako, Saito, H Sakai, G Sakai, Yamaguchi.
Group C's final game sees Colombia take on Japan at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba tonight, with both sides still having something to play for. For the South Americans, a win would see them finish top of the group and face the runners up from Group D - which many thought would originally have been England - oh how we were wrong. Japan could still qualify, but their chances are extremely slim. After nearly shocking Ivory Coast, but eventually losing 2-1, and then drawing 0-0 with ten-man Greece, Honda, Kagawa and co would have to beat Colombia and hope Ivory Coast lose to their European counterparts - an unlikely outcome. They could go through even if the Ivorians draw but they'd need a two-goal win – which let's face it, is unlikely to happen against one of the tournament's better sides.
Lots of people laughed off Colombia's chances of doing anything in this World Cup when it was announced star player Falcao would miss it through injury. But Los Cafeteros have a fine array of talent up front and even had the luxury of leaving pacey Udinese striker Luis Muriel at home. Jackson Martinez of Porto, Teo Gutierrez of River Plate, Carlos Bacca of Sevilla and new Borussia Dortmund signing Adrian Ramos are the men with the task of finding the onion bag for Colombia. If that isn't enough, they have James Rodriguez in their midfield, who has been one of the tournament's stand-out players thus far.
A notable fact of this Japan side is they like to keep hold of the ball. In their two games so far - they've had much more of the play. Against Ivory Coast they had 55%, and against Greece they had an astonishing 74% - a World Cup record. But from all that possession they've scored one goal and picked up the same amount of points. Maybe holding the ball isn't the key to success for them? With players like Honda and Kagawa in their ranks, perhaps trying to pass the ball about isn't the answer.
Colombia's last two games against tonight's opponents have ended with them keeping clean sheets. In the 2003 Confederations Cup they beat them 1-0 in the group stage, before drawing 0-0 in a friendly in 2007.
Pedro Proenca will be in charge of this encounter in Cuiaba. The Portuguese official has been a FIFA-listed ref since 2003 and took charge of the 2012 Champions League and European Championship finals.
