Korea Republic vs. Algeria
Minute Commentary
Sublime in the first half, slightly less so in the second; Algeria nevertheless should feel hugely proud of their efforts this evening as they first stunned and then withheld a South Korea side, who were marginal favourites coming into this game. 3-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Slimani, Halliche and Djabou, the Africans had to withstand a much-improved South Korea after half-time, the Asian side giving themselves a great chance of getting back into it when Son scored just five minutes into the second period. South Korea continued to dominate but were hit with a body blow of a goal, the excellent Brahimi playing a one-two before tucking coolly away from inside the area. At 4-1 the game looked over, but South Korea kept things lively when Koo poked home from close range with 20 minutes remaining. Algeria looked like they were beginning to tire, but try as they might South Korea could not make up the deficit. For them that means they must beat Belgium and hope Algeria narrowly lose to Russia. Algeria just need a point to go through - something that would be an incredible achievement.
There goes the full-time whistle! Algeria have their first World Cup finals win in 32 years and - more importantly - have given themselves a great chance to qualify from Group H!
Penalty? South Korea think it is as Heung-Min Son is shoved over unceremoniously by Medjani as he shapes to shoot in the box. The South Korean bench are outraged and they might have a right to be there. I've seen them given.
South Korea corner. Ki takes it from the right, but this is a superb take by M'Bohli who charges out to gather and buy his team some extra seconds.
Do Algeria want another? They work the ball down the left but Ghilas then stays in the corner buying time, losing out to his two markers. South Korea come forward again but they know the game is up.
Esseid Belkalem comes on for Algeria to replace Madjid Bouguerra.
Still South Korea press but time's running out for them. Ji has a great chance as the ball breaks to him on the left of the area but he drives the ball low and wide of the right-hand post.
Ghilas plays a one-two on the attack but can't reach the return for Algeria. South Korea come back up the other end and win a free-kick 25 yards out in a central position. Heung-Min Son steps up to take it but can only fire it into the wall.
Another long ball from South Korea - this time from the left - creates danger as Keun-Ho Lee gets across his marker at the near post but can only volley the ball wide of goal.
Slimani has gone down by the left touchline as the clock ticks on. Algeria are on the cusp of only their second World Cup finals win - their first since their first ever match at the tournament in 1982. It's been a long time coming.
South Korea keep up the pressure and win a free-kick 30 yards out to the right of goal. It's whipped in and Algeria can only clear for a corner. However they do rather better at dealing with Son's ball in and manage to clear their lines to touch.
Shin-Wook Kim goes close at the other end with a header too; but his effort is saved by M'Bohli.
Dong-Won Ji has now come on for South Korea, replacing Kook-Young Han. Algeria could add a fifth as substitute Ghilas gets on the end of Mesbah's cross from the left, but he heads over.
Yacine Brahimi is being taken off by Algeria. A man who fully deserves an early rest, he's been superb this evening, covering every blade of grass. Mehdi Lacen comes on for the Africans, who just need to hold on for another 15 minutes or so.
Substitution for Algeria. Nabil Ghilas has come on for goalscorer Djabou. South Korea go close as a cross-cum-shot from Keun-Ho Lee is tipped over the bar by M'Bolhi. Algeria suddenly look a little nervous again! Kim gets his head to the corner but can't get it on target.
This game's not dead yet! There'd been a quiet lull but then South Korea score as a long ball from the left is taken down by Son in the area. He's thwarted, but the ball breaks to Keun-Ho Lee who squares it across the six-yard box for Koo to poke home.
Madjid Bouguerra is a lucky man as he thunders into Heung-Min Son and takes out the talented striker. It's a yellow card for the defender but definitely could've been worse. Son dusts himself down to take the free-kick, which is dealt with by Algeria.
Where South Korea go from here I do not know. They'd looked so much brighter since half-time but will be devastated by that fourth goal. They win a corner down the right through Koo, but the ball in from the set-piece is poor and Algeria clear. Keun-Ho Lee has come on for Chung-Yong Lee.
Surely that's the end of the fightback! Wonderful goal from Algeria as Brahimi draws two defenders on the edge of the box before playing a lovely one-two with Slimani, then slotting the return low past Jung with his right foot. An utter body blow to South Korea.
Thunderbolt shot from Ki! Unfortunately he finds M'Bolhi equal to it. The midfielder tees it up and lets rip with a corking shot that's heading into the top right-hand corner, only to be tipped round the corner.
Algeria almost caught napping! A quick free-kick from the right by Lee is hacked off the line by a white shirt as everyone goes to sleep. South Korea bring Shin-Wook Kim on for Park.
Lee picks up the first yellow card of the game for a mistimed challenge. South Korea are on top at the moment though, and they think they should have a penalty as a sliding Bouguerra appears to block a Yun cross with his hand. It's not given though, but replays suggest the defender was lucky there.
Algeria almost score from the restart as Halliche gets up again to head Brahimi's free-kick from the right straight at Jung. However South Korea are growing in confidence and go close as a ball in finds Lee on the right of the penalty area; he pokes it back infield to Koo who heads wide from six yards. The offside flag had gone up but Algeria could probably do with reverting to type and defending a bit more from here on in.
That's exactly how they needed to start the half. In scenes reminiscent of two of Algeria's goals, a long 50-yard pass cuts through the Africans' defence; it's brought down by Son, who twists past his man before firing between the legs of Rais M'Bolhi to score. 3-1... game on?
There have been no changes from either side at half-time, meaning that South Korea are going with the same eleven who looked so devoid of a response to the onslaught of Algeria in the first-half. Hmmmm. They have a free-kick on the left near the byline though - Ki takes it but it's terrible and cleared at the near post.
South Korean are in a big huddle out on the field as the Algerian team come out for the second period. It's the African team who get us under way agian, playing from left to right.
South Korea can go in at half-time expecting some pretty harsh treatment at the hands of Myung-Bo Hong. Gaping holes in their defence have been brutally exploited by an Algeria team who have visibly left the Asian side shell-shocked at the aggression and tempo of their play. Few could've predicted the opening Algeria would have as they battered their opponents from the off, going close on several occasions. However they got their just desserts on 27 minutes when Slimani latched onto a through ball to score - having missed two previous opportunities. Within two minutes they'd doubled their lead, as Jung woefully missed a corner, allowing Halliche to head into an empty goal. A third followed before 40 minutes had come about, another through ball down the middle allowing Djabou to score. Algeria have been seriously impressive, attacking with intent down both central and wide channels, with Feghouli and Brahimi proving constant threats on the flanks. South Korea weren't expecting this, but they must react to it - or else risk a hiding.
That's half-time. A scarcely believable 3-0 to Algeria here. South Korea have never lost to an African team in the World Cup before - they're 45 minutes from losing that streak.
South Korea already look dejected - epitomised here as Ki gets the ball in the midfield and looks up, only to see no-one making themselves available for him, the Swansea City man instead being forced out of play.
South Korea look utterly stunned - their defence is at sixes and sevens with every long ball towards their centre-backs and they again struggle to deal with a corner, allowing Slimani to get a header on goal that goes out wide.
Well who could've predicted this. It's another long ball that splits the South Korean defence and this time it's Abdelmoumene Djabou who's on hand to take advantage; Slimani controls the ball before passing to the midfielder, who fires a low shot beyond Jung. 3-0 to Algeria and they are in dreamland.
Algeria haven't let up by any means and Brahimi proves a menace as he jinks in from the left. He goes to ground in the box and half-heartedly asks for a penalty. Not given.
South Korea are probing down the right as they desperately try to get back into this match. Lee puts a low cross in but it's cleared at the near post; he wins a free-kick down the same side shortly after though. It's too near to the keeper who punches it away. Slimani is back on by the way.
Algeria are on cloud nine but worryingly for them it looks like Slimani's gone down in the centre circle. Off he comes - temporarily for now - and that would be a big blow for the Africans should he fail to reappear.
And it's two! Incredible scenes! Algeria had almost scored straight from kick-off as Brahimi's low drive across goal was saved by Jung. From the resulting corner, though, the goalkeeper ends up in no-man's land and big Rafik Halliche gets up ahead of him to head the ball into an empty net! Woeful keeping but Algeria are on fire right now.
However he makes no mistake with this one! It's route one stuff from Medjani who hits a first-time 40-yard ball over the top to Slimani who again gets between the two centre-backs, keeps his composure and guides the bobbling ball beyond Jung. He has his goal and Algeria have the lead. Deservedly so.
Fehgouli plays a lovely little dink over the top of the defence to set Slimani through - however the forward fires over. Just as well for him perhaps that he was offside by an inch.
South Korea aren't out of the woods yet. A free-kick's given on the left and Djabou's ball in is unconvincingly punched away under pressure by Sung-Ryong Jung. Back come Algeria but Medjani fires over as it comes to him outside the area.
How did Slimani not put this one away!? A brilliant early cross from Aissa Mandi on the right catches the South Korean defence unawares and the Sporting Lisbon forward gets between the two central defenders, only to hook his volley straight up in the air. Baffling.
Up the other end and Algeria create an opportunity through Djabou. It's speculative from the midfielder however, and he fires wide from outside the penalty area with his left foot.
Medjani gives away a free-kick inside his own half, but South Korea can't make anything of Ki's dangerous ball into the box.
The game has settled down a little now, with Algeria yielding a bit of ground in the last few minutes. South Korea seemed a little shocked at the early tenacity of the Desert Foxes; but they seem to have got the measure of them for the moment at least.
Son continues to look dangerous and he dances between a couple of players before winning a corner. M'Bolhi's out from his goal quickly to punch away the ball in from the right by Ki - South Korea are starting to get a foothold in the game now though.
South Korea mount their first real attack but it breaks down in the penalty area as Heung-Min Son is outmuscled and the balls runs out for a goal kick. The Leverkusen man is definitely one to watch - but he was well marshalled there.
And still the pressure continues... Islam Slimani peels off his marker at the far post from a Djabou corner from the right, but sends his free header into the side netting. He should've got that on target at the very least.
I'd have made South Korea marginal favourites for this one but they've been under the cosh since the first whistle here. Another Algeria free-kick - this time on the left - has them worried again and Brahimi's cross is met at the near post but deflected out for a corner, which South Korea then gratefully hoof clear.
This is a blistering start by Algeria! South Korea have to throw bodies in the way of another onslaught and Brahimi is unlucky not to win a penalty as he takes a tumble in the box under a challenge from Kim.
Now Algeria have a free-kick just outside the box after a foul by Chu-Young Park. Yacine Brahimi steps up to take it, but he can only cannon it off the defensive wall.
Algeria fashion the first chance of the game and they're not far away. Djabou out on the left gets the ball into the box via a deflection to his one target in the penalty area - but Feghouli does well to create an opening, only to fire wide with his left foot. Bright start from the Algerians though.
South Korea have made no changes to their side despite suggestions that Chu-Young Park might have been facing the chop up front. Algeria have brought in Sporting Lisbon's Slimani up front. We're done with the national anthems and so South Korea get us under way! They're wearing red shirts and blue shorts, playing from left to right. Algeria are wearing white shirts and green shorts.

Could Algeria become the sixth team to exit this year's World Cup? This crunch Group H match versus South Korea will decide their fate. Having drawn with Russia, South Korea will be eyeing up tonight as the more winnable of their two remaining games – ahead of a final clash with Belgium. The slightly worrying stat for the Asian qualifiers however is that they've only managed to win one of their last six World Cup group stage games – although they can draw comfort from the fact that Algeria are winless in their previous seven. With 2002 World Cup semi-finalist Hong Myong-Bo as their manager now, South Korea have a reminder of the heights their national side are capable of – a win tonight would certainly set them in the right direction.
Algeria have never gone beyond the first round of the World Cup in their three previous three attempts, and few had them down as improving on that this time out. However they competed well against the much-fancied Belgians in their opening game – taking the lead before going down 2-1 – and drew praise for their defensive performance, which was marshalled by ex-Rangers man Madjid Bougherra. With South Korea struggling to break down Russia in their opening match, Algeria will be confident of being able to hold out their opponents tonight – the trouble is they need to score themselves. With ten international goals and 21 caps, Sporting Lisbon forward Islam Slimani will be their best hope; they might struggle to get the ball to him however.
South Korea are building for the future with fourteen of their squad 25 years-old or under – however having qualified for every World Cup since 1986, they often come into the tournament with expectations from their homeland. Achieving their best result in 2002, when reaching the semi-finals as co-hosts, the Koreans were not as good in 2010 but still reached the knock-out stages. A draw with Russia in the opening match of the 2014 finals was expected, but worrying for the Koreans was their lack of guile in being able to unlock their opponent's defence – possibly not surprising given they rely on ex-Arsenal reserve Park Chu-Young for goals. However they also have a strong Bundesliga contingent in their squad – including Mainz midfielder Koo Ja-Cheol and Leverkusen youngster Son Heung-Min – and you'd think would have too much for Algeria tonight.
Hong Myong-Bo may drop Park Chu-Young, with Lee Keun-Ho or Kim Shin-Wook possibly replacing him. All of Koo Ja-Cheol, Ki Sung-Yueng and Son Heung-Min need just one more booking for a suspension. Algeria are expected to be unchanged from the team who played Belgium.
