Minute Commentary
90' ODEMWINGIE TAKES HIS CHANCE
Peter Odemwingie's 29th-minute goal was somehow all that separated the sides in a match that featured countless chances, the game finishing 1-0 to Nigeria in their World Cup Group F meeting with Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Stoke striker finished from close range after Emmanuel Emenike bustled past Emir Spahic and pulled the ball back for his opportunistic teammate to score his country's first World Cup finals goal since 1998. A combination of brilliant midfield play and shaky defending from both sides produced opening after opening, with both goalkeepers distinguishing themselves. Edin Dzeko in particular just could not score; the striker had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside in the first half and hit the post in the final minute of stoppage time. Bosnia have showed us some superb football in this World Cup, but goals decide fates and in this case they've seen a good team eliminated. Nigeria now need a draw against Argentina to guarantee qualification, but they'll go through anyway providing Iran fail to beat Bosnia.
90' FULL TIME NIGERIA 1 BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA 0
The referee finally blows his whistle to sink Bosnia-Herzegovina's ship. Despite another superb showing, they're going home early from Brazil 2014.
90' OFF THE POST
Dzeko gets one final chance to save his country's bacon with a close-range effort, but it slams back off the post via a flick off the goalkeeper's left boot.
90' NO JOY FOR DZEKO
It just isn't going to be Edin Dzeko's day. The towering striker jumps abover his marker to head Miralem Pjanic's dinked cross from the right down and straight into Vincent Enyeama's arms, when anywhere else would've seen the effort hit the back of the net.
89' OMERUO SAVES THE DAY
Tino-Sven Susic is hauled down to win his side a free kick in Nigeria's half. Misimovic's set-piece sails over the penalty area and is picked up by Susic, who returns it to the box, where Kenneth Omeruo heads decisiveley away from danger.
86' TIME RUNNING OUT
Time is running out for Bosnia, who would be desperately unlucky to come out of their two games so far with nothing to show for their excellent efforts. Can they summon one last push here?
83' SHOTS, SHOTS AND MORE SHOTS
The shooting never lets up in this game. Onazi pulls off the shoulder of Spahic and sidesteps Besic before arrowing in a low shot, which is infused with power and forces Begovic to gather it at the second attempt.
81' YELLOW CARD
Ogenyi Onazi's umpteenth effort is well saved by the diving Begovic, and John Obi Mikel picks up a booking for blatantly blocking the highly impressive Miralem Pjanic as Bosnia threaten to break upfield.
79' OVER FROM UZOENYI
Nigeria win a free kick 30 yards from goal. It's Ejike Uzoenyi who takes it, arcing a poor attempt way over the wall and way high and wide of the net.
77' ENYEAMA STANDS FIRM
A drop of the shoulder takes Besic away from Ogenyi Onazi to move inside from the left flank, and the youngster forces Enyeama into a diving save at his near post.
75' SUBSTITUTION
Ejike Uzoenyi is sent into battle in place of Babatunde.
74' GOALDEN CHANCE
It looks like Michael Babatunde really was hurt; he's now been receiving treatment for several minutes. In the meantime, Ibisevic leaps above the pack to head Zvjezdan Misimovic's corner from the left sadly over the crossbar. That was a golden chance to score.
71' CALM DEFENDING
Sejad Salihovic is afforded too much space and time and takes advantage with a cross towards Edin Dzeko, who crouches to flick the ball on for Ibisevic. There's no joy for the pair, though, as Kenneth Omeruo nods the ball calmly back to the goalkeeper.
70' MIRACULOUS RECOVERY
Babatunde tries to skip past Muhamed Besic down by the left touchline, losing the ball and also taking a bang to the leg as the Bosnian swipes through the challenge. Babatunde is hauled off the pitch by Begovic so play can continue, but he returns to the fray in a matter of seconds.
67' IBISEVIC BORN SLIPPY
Vedad Ibisevic's first meaningful contribution comes in the form of a swivel on the spot and an instant effort, but the substitute slips as he turns and can't help miskicking.
65' SUBSTITITUTION
Nigeria's first substitution arrives in the form of Shola Ameobi, who replaces Musa. The Newcastle man makes an immediate impact with a deft pass to Emmanuel Emenike, who careers forward with defenders trailing in his wake. Nigeria's focal point hammers in a shot from a tight angle, but Asmir Begovic will not be beaten.
64' SUBSTITUTION
Safet Susic throws caution to the wind by making his third and final change, bringing his namesake Tino-Sven Susic on for Haris Medunjanin.
61' DOUBLE CHANCE
Nigeria spurn a pair of gilt-edged chances to double their lead. First Babatunde jinks past a series of challenges and fires in an effort that Begovic can only parry, with Emir Spahic reaching the rebound before any opponent, before Odemwingie touches the ball on for Emenike, who is thwarted at point-blank range by the sprawling keeper.
58' SUBSTITUTION
Bosnia don't wait too long to make their second switch; this time Sejad Salihovic replaces Lulic.
57' SUBSTITUTION
The hero of the first game, Vedad Ibisevic, is finally introduced in place of Izet Hajrovic.
55' THE POWER OF BABATUNDE
Onazi plays a short pass to Michael Babatunde, who spots a gap and belts a shot towards goal. It's straight at Begovic, but the power behind the shot bounces it back off the Stoke keeper. Mensur Mujdza is in the right place at the right time and manages to hack the loose ball away.
54' FINAL BALL FOLLY
The all-seeing Pjanic releases Senad Lulic with yet another through ball to send him to the byline. Again, though, the final pass is behind the disappointed Dzeko, who still waits for the goal that looks destined to arrive.
51' SNEAK ATTACK
Hajrovic rolls the ball into Edin Dzeko's feet. The diligent striker holds it up for a moment near the six-yard box with his back to goal, only for Efe Ambrose to nick the ball away with a sneaky left foot.
48' INTO ROW Z
Pjanic bisects the defence with a great through ball to the overlapping Izet Hajrovic, who crosses low towards Edin Dzeko. The ball is behind the striker, but he tries a flicked effort anyway, and it flies almost vertically into the stands.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are back out and the second half is underway, with neither manager having made any changes at the break.
45' ODEMWINGIE BREAKS THE DEADLOCK
Peter Odemwingie took advantage of Bosnia-Herzegovina's leaky defence with a simple 29th minute tap-in after Emmanuel Emenike had powered past the helpless Emir Spahic, but it's a miracle that no other goals have been scored in this incredibly open match. Each side has peppered the opposing net with shots, most frequently supplied by Ogenyi Onazi for Nigeria and Edin Dzeko for Bosnia while goalkeepers Vincent Enyeama and Asmir Begovic have stood firm. The unfortunate Dzeko even had the ball in the net in the 21st minute, only for the goal to be wrongly ruled out for offside. The Super Eagles might decide to shut up shop at some point, but until that happens there are surely more goals to come from this thrilling encounter. Stay tuned for all the action after the break.
45' HALF TIME NIGERIA 1 BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA 0
Dzeko smashes another shot several yards wide, and the referee deems it a good time to end the half. Nigeria currently lead this match by a goal to nil.
45' A STRIKER'S TACKLE
Pjanic wriggles past a feeble attempt to defend by Peter Odemwingie to create a yard of space on the right-hand side of the area. He makes good use of it to find Dzeko with a pull-back, but the latter can't find the target with his first-time shot.
42' OLE OLE
The Nigeria fans have started with the ole's as their team settle into a comfortable passing rhythm. Problem is, their shaky defence means any turnover of possession could prove hazardous.
40' NOWHERE NEAR
Haris Medunjanin has a crack from a fair distance, the shot never looking likely to hit the target.
39' WEAK LINK EXPLOITED
Spahic, who is looking vulnerable, is beaten far too easily by Musa's run. The CSKA Moscow man shoots from a tight angle, but Begovic is far too canny to allow such an effort to trouble him.
38' EMENIKE RETURNS
It looks like Emmanuel Emenike just wanted a water break; after leaving the pitch, supposedly for treatment, he trots straight back on as if nothing had happened.
36' MAN (SITTING) DOWN
Emenike suddenly sits down in the middle of the pitch with no cause evident and invites the medical staff to come and take a look at him. It would be a shame if the Nigeria man were injured, as he's been a real bright spark so far tonight.
33' DZEKO ON THE MOVE
Great movement from Dzeko takes the him away from Joseph Yobo as a cross drifts in from the right, but it's slightly too far in front of the striker and ends up running out for a goal kick.
32' HEADS UP BOSNIA
Bosnia had been creating chances for fun prior to conceding that goal, and must not lose confidence. Already they're knocking the ball about with freedom, so it shouldn't prove too much of an issue.
29' GOAL!!! NIGERIA
Emmanuel Emenike receives the ball out on the right wing and leaves Emir Spahic on his backside with a barrelling run that takes him all the way to the byline. The forward spots PETER ODEMWINGIE in the middle and pulls the ball back for the Stoke man to score with a simple tap-in. 1-0 to Nigeria.
28' NOBODY THERE
Miralem Pjanic takes aim from 25 yards, forcing Enyeama into a diving save. The beleaguered keeper can only parry it away, but no Bosnia player is on hand to bury the rebound.
27' WILD EFFORT
Ogenyi Onazi finds Emenike with a forward pass into the box. The striker uses his strength to hold the ball up and return it to his benefactor, who takes a wild swipe to miss the goal by a country mile.
24' DZEKO DENIED AGAIN
This time it's Pjanic who sends Dzeko sprinting beyond the back line with a perfectly-weighted slide-rule pass. There's no offside flag, but the forward is denied by a good save by Vincent Enyeama, who stands up tall to block Dzeko's fierce drive.
23' PAPER DEFENCE
The chances keep on coming, with neither defence looking capable of preventing their tormentors from getting efforts in on goal. This time Izet Hajrovic cuts in from the right, evading two defenders to drag a low shot into the arms of Enyeama.
21' GOAL DISALLOWED
Moments after Ahmed Musa sees a well-struck effort saved at the other end, Senad Lulic plays a through ball for Edin Dzeko to stick the ball in the back of the net with consummate ease. The Manchester City man's celebrations are cut short by the offside flag, but he looked in line. That's a poor decision from the linesman.
19' CURLER FROM MISIMOVIC
Toni Sunjic rises high to connect with Pjanic's corner, but can't direct his header goalwards. Zvjezdan Misimovic is on hand to pick up the scraps, bending a shot high and wide from just inside the box.
17' TOO MUCH ON IT
Bosnia break upfield at speed through Miralem Pjanic, who looks for Dzeko with a searching through ball, but the pass is overpowered and runs harmlessly through to Vincent Enyeama.
14' SUPER EAGLES TAKING FLIGHT
Nigeria are really cranking up the pressure now. Onazi is the latest to try his luck with a venomous 20-yard effort that has Begovic scrambling to his right to save, but they need to take their chances while the going's good.
13' MUSA OFFSIDE
An enterprising passing move by Nigeria, who are enjoying a decent spell, ends with Odemwingie forcing a save from Asmir Begovic, but Musa had been flagged for offside in the build-up.
11' FOREIGN TERRITORY
John Obi Mikel finds himself in a most unfamiliar position near the opposing goal, but shows that he remembers what to do with a dangerous low strike that's not far from hitting the target.
9' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
A stray arm from Odemwingie gives Zvjezdan Misimovic a chance to send a free kick into the penalty area, and the midfielder obliges with a poor effort that fails to clear the first man.
8' BRILLIANT BESIC
Besic, who has started this game in brilliant form, glances up 25 yards from goal and curls a delicious shot narrowly over the bar. This boy, Bosnia's youngest ever player, looks a real talent.
7' ODEMWINGIE GOES CLOSE
Peter Odemwingie takes the resulting free kick, sending a decent attempt bending over the wall and a yard wide of the right-hand post.
6' YELLOW CARD
Emir Spahic gets it all wrong with a pass that falls straight to Emmanuel Emenike. The forward sets off towards goal, and Haris Medunjanin takes one for the team with a cynical challenge to halt his opponent's advance. As expected, Medunjanin is awarded a yellow card.
3' POWERED WIDE
Ahmed Musa's corner from the right is hit low and deflects kindly for Ogenyi Onazi on the edge of the box. The Nigeria man goes for goal with a powerful effort through a packed area that swerves wide of the right-hand post.
1' EARLY THREAT
Bosnia threaten immediately as Muhamed Besic powers up the right wing and crosses low towards Edin Dzeko. In the end the ball is too far behind the striker, and Joseph Yobo steps in to clear.
1' KICK OFF
Nigeria get us underway here at the Arena Pantanal to loud cheers from the crowd. As with every game at this World Cup, the atmosphere is superb.
0' PLENTY TO PLAY FOR
With Argentina having just about scraped a win over Iran earlier today, it's now looking likely that the winner of this game, should there be one, will be going through with Lionel Messi and co. More than a little bit at stake then.
0' BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
Safet Susic has made a couple of changes; Senad Lulic moves to left back, with Toni Sunjic coming in to start at centre back, while Haris Medunjanin is picked on the left wing. Ermin Bicakcic and Sead Kolasinac drop to the bench, and there's no place for Vedad Ibisevic, who scored Bosnia's lone goal against Argentina.
0' NIGERIA LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
Nigeria have made changes to the side that drew with Iran; Joseph Yobo replaces the injured Godfrey Oboabona, while Peter Odemwingie starts in attack after impressing as a substitute in that game and Michael Babatunde comes in for Victor Moses. Kenneth Omeruo and Ahmed Musa have been declared fit to play.
0' NIGERIA V BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA
Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina have the chance to seize some initiative in Group F as the two sides clash tonight in Brazil. The African outfit disappointed in their opening 1-1 draw with a well-organised but unambitious Iran, but the form book shows that it was hardly a massive surprise; Nigeria have now failed to win in their last nine World Cup matches. Bosnia had a much more impressive first outing, playing well and ending up extremely unlucky to lose to much-fancied Argentina. If the two teams each take their first-match form into this game, there'll only be one winner, and if that winner is indeed Bosnia the World Cup debutants will fancy their chances of qualification, with Iran to play in the final group game. Join me, Luke Ostler, at 11pm for all the action from the Arena Pantanal, Cuiaba.
0' REF WATCH
New Zealand's football team may not have made it to the finals, but the country is proud to be represented by referee Peter O'Leary, who takes charge of tonight's Group F clash. O'Leary, who officiates in Australia's A-League and holds a day job as head of biology at Tikipunga Hgh School, becomes the second Kiwi to take charge of a World Cup match.
0' PICKING UP THE PIECES
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi freely admits that the country's opening game against Iran was a disaster: “The boys were nervous and unsettled - you don't do that at this stage”, he admitted. "It happens in football. We really didn't perform as expected but we have to move on. I wanted a win but we must take a draw. We must do better to get a win against Bosnia".
0' BOSNIA MAKING HISTORY
This is the first major tournament in Bosnia-Herzegovina's short history, the national side only having been recognised by FIFA since 1995, so plenty of emotions are tied up in this campaign. Several of the players lived through the war-torn early 1990s that saw their nation emerge from what was once Yugoslavia, so the spirit of struggle already lives with them. Expect no less than 100% fight from Bosnia this evening.
0' ONE TO WATCH
Followers of the Barclays Premier League and the Bundesliga will already be familiar with Bosnia's Edin Dzeko. The powerful striker ended the season in fine form for Manchester City and has a fine goalscoring record for his country; he proved unable to force one home against Argentina, but Nigeria's ropey defence should provide the ideal opportunity for Dzeko to open his World Cup account.
0' NIGERIA TEAM NEWS
Coach Stephen Keshi is troubled by mounting injury concerns, the most serious of which has seen defender Godfrey Oboabona ruled out with an ankle injury. Ahmed Musa, Kenneth Omeruo and Reuben Gabriel are all struggling for fitness and will face late tests.
0' BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA TEAM NEWS
Coach Safet Susic has no injury concerns heading into tonight's match, but striker Vedad Ibisevic is pushing hard for a starting berth after coming off the bench to score the side's only goal against Argentina.
