Uruguay vs. England
Minute Commentary
90' SUAREZ THE MAN FOR ECSTATIC URUGUAY
Luis Suarez was the hero who conquered the country that pays his wages as Uruguay defeated England 2-1 in the sides' crucial World Cup Group D clash. An even contest saw its first goal arrive in the 39th minute when Edinson Cavani's superb chipped cross found strike partner Luis Suarez, who swivelled to head perfectly inside the far post. England survived a spell of severe pressure just after the break and came back strongly, levelling the scores in the 75th minute when Glen Johnson's ball across goal was smashed home at the far post by Wayne Rooney, who had earlier headed against the crossbar. The momentum was with the Three Lions, but all was lost when Fernando Muslera kicked long and Steven Gerrard's 85th-minute header flicked backwards into Suarez's path. There was only one outcome. England now have to hope desperately that results go their way, but the reality is that elimination looms large. Uruguay have that man Luis Suarez to thank yet again.
90' FULL TIME URUGUAY 2 ENGLAND 1
Three blasts on the referee's whistle puts a knife through England hearts as the Uruguay bench goes wild. There's a perfunctory hug between Suarez and Gerrard, but no love is lost. Uruguay have beaten England by two goals to one.
90' LAST CHANCE
Rooney slams a shot against Sebastian Coates, and England have a last-minute corner. Joe Hart comes up, but nobody can get clean contact and a goal kick is given.
90' GERRARD OFF TARGET
Baines moves inside from the left flank and toe-ends the ball to Steven Gerrard. The England captain shoots from outside the box, but Cahill gets in the way slightly and the effort ends up a long way wide.
90' SUBSTITUTION
A desperate last roll of the dice for England sees Rickie Lambert replace Henderson.
89' SUBSTITUTION
Suarez finally makes way for Sebastian Coates as the crowd applaud in worship of their hero.
88' NO WAY THROUGH
Gerrard chips a free kick into the area, but it fails to defeat the Uruguay defence, who head away.
86' FALLEN HERO
Luis Suarez's legs have carried him as far as they can, and the striker collapses to the turf, but it's more than enough. Once again he's proved himself as one of the finest talents in world football.
85' GOAL!!! URUGUAY
The Liverpool connection goes Uruguay's way as Steven Gerrard rises for a header in midfield, only for the ball to flick backwards. Wouldn't you know it, but it spins into LUIS SUAREZ's path; the striker had gambled to gain a yard on Gary Cahill, and he makes no mistake to move in on goal and thrash a shot past Joe Hart from a tight angle.
82' CAHILL STEMS THE TIDE
Martin Caceres receives Edinson Cavani's pass in plenty of space and aims for the back post, where Gary Cahill heads the ball behind. The corner goes out to the edge of the box and is returned to the taker Luis Suarez, whose cross is again headed behind by the heroic Cahill.
79' SUBSTITUTION
Gonzalez makes way for full back Jorge Fucile in a defensive substitution for Uruguay.
78' STANDING START
Rooney passes into Daniel Sturridge's feet with the striker faced by two defenders near the goal. He stops for a second before aiming for the bottom corner with a lacklustre effort that Muslera halts with a diving save.
77' NO PENALTY
Alvaro Pereira barges Sturridge over inside the box, but got something on the ball. No penalty is awarded.
75' GOAL!!! ENGLAND
It's there! Daniel Sturridge plays a pass up the right wing to Glen Johnson, who cuts inside at speed. The right back nutmegs Christian Stuani and slides the ball across the face of goal for WAYNE ROONEY to slam home his first World Cup goal at the back post.
74' NO END PRODUCT
A brilliant turn by Daniel Sturridge takes the Liverpool man away from three defenders, creating space to shoot from the edge of the area, but he can only conjure a disappointingly weak effort that proves easy for the keeper to stop.
72' STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER
Rooney barges over Arevalo Rios as the pair await the drop of a high ball, giving Uruguay a free kick. Luis Suarez directs a long-distance effort straight into Joe Hart's waiting arms.
71' SUBSTITUTION
Roy Hodgson goes for more creativity with the introduction of Adam Lallana for Welbeck.
68' YELLOW CARD
Steven Gerrard smashes through Alvaro Gonzalez with a tackle that gets some of the ball but a lot of the man. The reward for his use of such force is a yellow card.
67' SUBSTITUTION
Oscar Tabarez makes his first change of the evening, replacing Lodeiro with Christian Stuani. That move looks designed to reduce the influence of Leighton Baines, who has had considerable joy this half.
65' WAYWARD PASS
Sturridge spins off Jose Gimenez's shoulder and knocks the ball low into the area looking for Rooney, but it's easily seized by the grateful goalkeeper.
64' SUBSTITUTION
Roy Hodgson has decided to make a change, introducing Ross Barkley for Sterling.
63' KNOCKOUT BLOW
During that passage of play Pereira was caught in the side of the head by Sterling's knee and knocked out cold. He soon comes round and insists on returning to the field against the wishes of the team doctors. That's passion to play for your country.
61' PENALTY SHOUT
Raheem Sterling skips away from Alvaro Pereira and tries to roulette away from Lodeiro inside the box, only to be nudged off balance and fall. The ref never looks interested.
59' LOW POWER
Jordan Henderson wins the ball cleanly in midfield and drives past Cavani to shoot from the left-hand edge of the box, but the effort lacks the power to ever trouble Muslera.
58' FOUL PLAY
That spell of England pressure has died down now as their opponents start to break up the play. The fouls are multiplying from both of these committed sides.
55' WELBECK AT A STRETCH
Another great ball from Leighton Baines is just ahead of Welbeck, who slides in and catches Muslera on his knee as the keeper howls in pain.
54' ROONEY DENIED
Baines wriggles free of two defenders on the left flank and locates Rooney with a low ball into the box. The striker, right in front of goal, takes a touch and sees his venomous effort well saved by the sprawling Muslera.
52' NO LUCK FOR CAVANI
England are all over the place right now. Lodeiro runs at the back line and slips a clever pass through for Edinson Cavani, who curls his shot wide of the right-hand post with only Joe Hart to beat.
51' SUAREZ MISSES
Egidio Arevalo Rios pulls off a powerful overhead kick that turns defence into attack with Suarez in acres of space on the right. Unbelievably, the striker scuffs a shot that drags yards wide of the far post.
49' CORNER ROUTINE
Luis Suarez's corner from the left is hit low and very nearly creeps in at the near post, but Hart scrambles backwards to push it away and Gerrard clears the rebound.
48' ACCIDENTAL CONTACT
Pereira collapses to the turf holding his face after running into Daniel Sturridge's outstretched arm. A free kick is given, but the refereeing team decides no intent is involved.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are out and the second half is underway, with the stakes still high. Neither manager has made any changes as yet. Can Uruguay hold onto their slender advantage?
45' THE SUAREZ DIFFERENCE
Luis Suarez was the name on everybody's lips before this game, and so far the Uruguay talisman has made the difference; the 39th minute saw Edinson Cavani slice a superb cross into the area for his strike partner to swivel and direct a perfect header past Joe Hart. Up until that point the game had been fairly even, with both teams enjoying a single gilt-edged chance; Uruguay's came when Cavani clipped Suarez's low corner over, while for England Wayne Rooney headed a Steven Gerrard free kick against the bar. The South American outfit look completely energised compared to their lacklustre showing against Costa Rica, while England are as nervous as ever. There could be changes on the way from Roy Hodgson, so stay tuned for all the action from the second half.
45' HALF TIME URUGUAY 1 ENGLAND 0
It's half time here at the Arena de Sao Paulo, where England trail Uruguay by a goal to nil.
44' TIME FOR A CHANGE?
With half time fast approaching, England still look spirited but are typically short of creativity. We might see the likes of Ross Barkley and Jack Wilshere after the break.
41' INSTANT RESPONSE
England almost hit back immediately as they did against Italy. Rooney slots a through ball between defenders for Sturridge, whose driven effort from an angle is beaten away by Fernando Muslera.
39' GOAL!!! URUGUAY
Everything that England feared has come true. Nicolas Lodeiro bustles through Steven Gerrard's challenge and plays a pass to his left for Edinson Cavani. The forward cuts inside and slices a tremendous ball into the area for LUIS SUAREZ, who peels off Phil Jagielka's shoulder and twists to direct a perfect header past Joe Hart and into the corner of the net.
36' SPECULATIVE EFFORT
Johnson knocks it short to Sturridge, who takes two paces forward and decides to try his luck from a formidable distance. Unsurprisingly the ball rises a long way above the goal.
34' FIRST MAN IN THE WAY
Gerrard is harshly penalised for what looked like a fair tackle on Cristian Rodriguez. Suarez takes the set-piece, but proves unable to clear Daniel Sturridge on the 18-yard line.
31' OFF THE BAR
Danny Welbeck draws a foul from Caceres on the left wing, allowing Gerrard to loft a free kick to the back stick, where Wayne Rooney leaps above his marker to crash a header against the underside of the crossbar.
29' LUCKY BOY
Godin thrusts an elbow into Sturridge's neck as the striker chases a through ball from Wayne Rooney. Godin, who has already been booked, is highly fortunate not to receive any punishment. Steven Gerrard bends the free kick into the box, but it presents no problems for the Uruguay defence.
27' WHAT A CHANCE
Luis Suarez surprises the defence with a low corner for Cavani, who clips a first-time effort over the bar from deep inside the box. That was a brilliant chance to take the lead.
26' CONFIDENT KEEPING
Suarez sends the ball sailing high over the area to the back post, but Hart oozes confidence in plucking it from the air just as Edinson Cavani is about to pounce.
25' TRICKY CALL
There's a controversial call from the ref as Sterling uses his body strength to send Alvaro Pereira flying as the Liverpool winger spins away. No booking, but a free kick in England's half.
22' TOO MUCH ON IT
Suarez collects Martin Caceres' pass with his back to goal and lays the ball off to Lodeiro, but the midfielder's return pass, a chip over Cahill's head, lacks the accuracy to keep it in touch.
20' NOT 100%
Although of course still very dangerous, it does look as if Suarez is holding something back. The forward isn't chasing the same lost causes he would do for his club.
17' UNLUCKY DEFLECTION
England's best move yet sees Welbeck pursue a Raheem Sterling dink into the box and pull it back for Baines. The defender turns inside and feeds Rooney, who in turn plays the ball to his right for Daniel Sturridge, who cuts inside and sees his shot deflected high into the stands.
15' BLASTED OVER
Jagielka fails to clear Alvaro Gonzalez's cross, allowing the ball to fall kindly to Cristian Rodriguez, who blasts over the bar from just outside the penalty area.
12' MOMENT OF MADNESS
Phil Jagielka does something nobody would advise and tries to step over the ball with Luis Suarez in attendance, getting his legs in a muddle to mess up entirely. Fortunately for the centre back, he manages to hack the ball upfield at the second attempt.
10' ROONEY GOES CLOSE
Wayne Rooney steps up to take the resulting free kick, curling it nicely over the wall and agonisingly wide of the left-hand post.
9' YELLOW CARD
Danny Welbeck finds Sturridge with a ball inside, and the striker heads off on a dribble. On reaching the edge of the box, he tries to dink the ball past Diego Godin, only for the Uruguay skipper to stick out a hand and stop the ball. A yellow card is Godin's reward.
7' WASTED OPPORTUNITY
Sturridge receives a pass form Glen Johnson on the right flank and plays it inside to Raheem Sterling. The youngster jinks away from two defenders and is hauled down to win a free kick in a dangerous area, but Leighton Baines wastes it with a hopeful cross that's easily cleared.
5' SUAREZ THREATENS
Luis Suarez plays a sharp one-two with Nicolas Lodeiro and races behind Baines to play a low cross into the box, where Gary Cahill's header puts it behind. Suarez's corner is also low and forces Joe Hart to palm the ball off Jordan Henderson and behind again. This time Suarez's set-piece comes to nothing.
2' DODGY KEEPER
Leighton Baines plays the ball low into the penalty area for Daniel Sturridge, who rolls Jose Gimenez but can't reach the ball ahead of Fernando Muslera. Sturridge almost gets another go at things, however, when Muslera spills the ball, but he quickly grabs it again to allay Uruguayan fears.
1' KICK OFF
The waiting is over and hearts are in mouths as referee Carlos Velasco Carballo gets tonight's World Cup Group D clash underway here at the Arena de Sao Paulo. Games don't come much bigger than this.
0' SERIOUS BUSINESS
The players are striding out of the tunnel into a cauldron of noise, mostly supplied by the multitude of Uruguay fans, and all 22 are looking serious but confident.
0' KEEPING IT COOL
Sao Paulo this evening is certainly no Manaus; the temperature is hovering around 14 degrees and feels more like an English summer evening than what you'd expect from the climate of tropical Brazil. Heat and humidity cannot be used as excuses tonight.
0' CRUNCH TIME
It can be agonising that two years of straining every sinew in qualifying comes down to these moments. But that's the beauty of the World Cup. All 22 players will be feeling an incredible mix of excitement and nerves.
0' ENGLAND LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
Roy Hodgson has stuck with the eleven players who performed well against Italy; the one change sees Wayne Rooney picked in his favoured position behind the main striker, with Raheem Sterling moving out to the left wing.
0' URUGUAY LINE-UP ANNOUNCED
First things first: nobody anywhere is surprised to see Luis Suarez's name on the teamsheet. Much more of a shock is the presence of Nicolas Lodeiro at the tip of a diamond midfield, with Walter Gargano dropped to the bench. Added to this, instead of the expected Jorge Fucile and Sebastian Coates, Alvaro Pereira and Jose Gimenez have been brought into a back line decimated by the loss of Maxi Pereira to suspension and Diego Lugano to injury.
0' URUGUAY V ENGLAND
Every so often a game comes around that has an entire country gripping, with white knuckles, the very edge of its seat. That game is today, as England go head-to-head with Uruguay in the clash that could well decide which team takes an early exit from Brazil 2014. Saturday's 2-1 loss to Italy was a significant blow both to England's morale and to their chances of progression from Group D, but the prevailing feeling from manager, players and press alike was that the team's attacking play looked more potent than it has done in years. What is more, if that attacking verve can be similarly unleashed in the next two games, England's chances of progression remain healthy. Offence will certainly be the order of the day in what promises to be a highly open encounter; Uruguay, too, need to go all-out after suffering an unexpected defeat to minnows Costa Rica in their opening match. Fans of England must steel their nerves and accept that whatever happens, it won't be a smooth ride. Join me, Luke Ostler, at 8pm for World Cup action from the Arena de Sao Paulo, Brazil.
0' SCOUTING REPORT
Viewers of Uruguay's encounter with Costa Rica, which the South Americans lost 3-1, will not hold too many concerns for England. An even first half gave way to panic after the break as Uruguay's sluggish central midfield pairing of Walter Gargano and Egidio Arevalo Rios were overrun by their eager opponents. Problems also surfaced at the back, where the shakiness of captain Diego Lugano even seemed to affect his normally stalwart central defensive partner Diego Godin. Lugano is missing today with a knee injury, but there should still be plenty for an enterprising England forward line to exploit.
0' THE SUAREZ FACTOR
It might not be going too far to suggest that Uruguay's hopes rest on the shoulders of one Luis Suarez. The team's star man, now widely acknowledged as one of the world's very best, was not considered ready to take part in the match against Costa Rica after recovering from knee surgery, but may well be pressed into action against England. Suarez will not be match fit, but even at less than 100% he remains a source of incredible danger to any opponent. No matter how organised Roy Hodgson makes his team, a moment of genius from the Liverpool striker will be enough to destroy any defence in the world.
0' THE ROONEY CONUNDRUM
Ever since England's game against Italy, the debate has raged over where, if at all, Wayne Rooney should play. The side's top scorer in qualifying worked hard for the team and provided an excellent assist for Daniel Sturridge's goal, but remains yet to score at a World Cup. The most likely outcome is for Roy Hodgson to move Rooney into a central role behind Sturridge where he can exert the most influence, but some brave calls from the manager so far in this tournament show that nothing can be taken for granted.
0' REF WATCH
Spain's Carlos Velasco Carballo, who you would have to assume is in a bad mood after his country crashed out of the tournament last night, has been selected to take charge of this crunch clash. Carballo was involved in controversy in a Champions League match between Manchester United and Bayern Munich in April when he sent off Bastian Schweinsteiger for a second yellow card following an alleged dive by Wayne Rooney. That event could come back to haunt Rooney if Uruguay's ‘dark arts' succeed in swinging the game in their favour.
0' URUGUAY TEAM NEWS
Maxi Pereira is suspended after being sent off against Costa Rica, so experienced Porto right-back Jorge Fucile is set to step in. Coach Oscar Tabarez must choose between reserve Liverpool centre back Sebastian Coates or Atletico Madrid rookie Jose Maria Gimenez to replace injured captain Diego Lugano. And in case you hadn't heard, Luis Suarez should come in for Diego Forlan up front.
0' ENGLAND TEAM NEWS
This game has come just a little too early for Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, who is still recovering from a knee problem sustained in the warm-up match against Honduras, but apart from that everybody is fit. Roy Hodgson seems likely to select the same personnel that started against Italy, albeit with the odd positional shuffle.
