Australia vs. Netherlands
Minute Commentary
A second half strike by Memphis Depay earned the Netherlands all three points and a spot in the second round of the World Cup after a hard-fought 3-2 win over a remarkably impressive and gutsy Australia. The Dutch took the lead through Arjen Robben after a run from inside his own half, but Australia got straight back into the game thanks to Tim Cahill's incredible volley. Australia showed attacking intent throughout, but were slightly fortunate to be awarded a penalty when Oliver Bozanic's hammered cross struck an arm inside the area. Mile Jedinak despatched the spot-kick, but Robin van Persie responded quickly with an emphatic finish from close range. Both teams went all-out for a win as the game neared its conclusion, but the winner when it came was a slight disappointment for Australia – the goalkeeper Maty Ryan allowing Memphis Depay's speculative effort to slip past him. Australia pushed hard for the equaliser, but couldn't create the golden chance that they really wanted. Both Tim Cahill and Robin van Persie picked up bookings that will keep them out of the last round of group games, while Bruno Martins Indi was taken off on a stretcher and may miss the rest of the tournament. In Porto Alegre it finished Australia 2, the Netherlands 3.
Maty Ryan makes a save that denies Jeremain Lens a fourth that the Dutch don't really deserve.
Australia are pushing hard for the equaliser, but two poor crosses in quick succession from Oliver Bozanic suggests that they are struggling to keep their composure in the face of what will be a defeat that all-but confirms an early World Cup exit.
Robin van Persie is withdrawn before he gets himself sent off. The captain is replaced by Jeremain Lens.
The Netherlands are trying to soak up the pressure and keep the ball for as long as possible to take the sting out of Australia's search for an equaliser. It's going well so far, but you can see the Socceroos having one more chance on the break.
Nigel de Jong has come into his own against the physical Aussies, and – moments after a strong challenge ends an Australian counter-attack – the midfielder's diving header clears a whipped Mile Jedinak free-kick. It is a backs-to-the-wall effort by the Dutch at times, which is a bit of a surprise against the lowest-ranked team at the World Cup.
Mathew Leckie runs into Daryl Janmaat inside the area and crumples to the floor. That was never a penalty, and thankfully the referee agrees.
Adam Taggart replaces Tommy Oar to give Australia another attacking option. The substitute is the top-scorer in the A League.
The goalkeeper was at fault for the third Dutch goal, but he keeps his team in with a chance of getting something from the game with a great save to deny Nigel de Jong's thunderbolt after a beautiful lay-off by Robin van Persie. The keeper did well to get there, but equally as good was the fact that he directed the save away from the waiting Arjen Robben.
Arjen Robben threads a free-kick through a large Australian wall, but the shot never looked likely to trouble Maty Ryan between the sticks.
Australia's spirit and resolve has been a stand-out feature of this match, but you would expect Holland to see out the win from here. Can Ben Halloran – a replacement for the tiring Tim Cahill – provide a spark to get the Socceroos back into it?
Maty Ryan allows a Memphis Depay shot to sneak past him and into the corner of the net to give Holland the lead. That is a real sucker-punch for the Aussies, and Maty knows it. 3-2!
Australia make a right hash of a golden opportunity to regain the lead. A ricochet gifts Oliver Bozanic the ball inside the box, but he neither shoots nor really crosses and Mathew Leckie can only chest the ball into the arms of a grateful Jasper Cillessen.
Robin van Persie is in danger of losing his cool, and the striker's latest flying challenge could very easily have earned him a second yellow and an early bath. As it is the referee shows remarkable leniency.
This group was probably the pick of the bunch before the tournament kicked off, and it hasn't disappointed. The Dutch win over Spain was a remarkable start to the competition, but Australia have played a huge part in making first the Chile match and now this one extremely entertaining affairs.
Robin van Perie pulls the Netherlands level! Memphis Depay threads a clever pass through to the unmarked Van Persie inside the area, and the striker's shot leaves nothing to chance, fizzing into the roof of the net. 2-2!
The Dutch commit too many players forward and lose the ball. Tim Cahill holds the ball up and waits for Oliver Bozanic's overlapping run, but the pass is fractionally too heavy, forcing Bozanic to cross rather than shoot, and Ron Vlaar beats Cahill to the header.
Mile Jedinak sends the keeper the wrong way and coolly dispatches a penalty that gives Australia a shock lead against the Netherlands. Who saw this coming?!
Oliver Bozanic twists and turns inside the box before fizzing a cross straight into the arm of the covering Daryl Janmaat. The referee gives himself a moment to think about it before pointing to the spot, prompting a furious reaction from the Dutch players.
Wesley Sneijder has been extremely quiet in this game – as he was in the win over Spain – but the midfielder still has bags of talent even as he heads towards the tail end of his career, and his fizzing drive is tipped around the post by Maty Ryan.
Robin van Persie catches Matthew Spiranovic in the face with a stray arm and picks up a booking that will rule him out of the final group match.
The game is back underway and Australia have the ball in the back of the net in under 20 seconds. However, the referee blows for a foul by Mathew Leckie on Daley Blind so the goal won't stand.
The whistle goes to end a fascinating first half in Porto Alegre. The tempo of the game has been high, and there have been plenty of rash challenges – none more so than by Tim Cahill on Bruno Martins Indi just before the break, with the defender having to be taken off on a stretcher as a result. The goals came in a dramatic 70-second spell midway through the half. First Arjen Robben ran half the length of the pitch after a brilliant turn to lose his marker, finishing past Maty Ryan with aplomb. But from the restart a long Ryan McGowan ball forward was met on the volley by the left foot of Tim Cahill with the best finish of the tournament so far. Both teams will fancy their chances of going on to win this one.
Memphis Depay replaces Bruno Martins Indi, which presumably means that Holland will switch to a 4-3-3 for the second half, with Daley Blind pushed further forward.
Bruno Martins Indi looks as if he has picked up a bit of a nasty injury from that Tim Cahill challenge. The defender is taken from the ground on a stretcher with his head strapped into a brace. Fingers crossed he is okay and will be able to feature again in the tournament, but the signs are not good.
Tim Cahill clatters into Bruno Martins Indi and is deservedly shown the first card of the match. That is Cahill's second yellow of the tournament and will keep him out of the final group game against Spain.
Ange Postecoglou's team are big, strong and not afraid to show it, but Holland are no wimps either. It is a pretty testing match for the referee, who has done remarkably well to keep his cards in his pocket to the extent that he has.
Australia are really up for this game now, and the Dutch will know that a defeat would put them right back in trouble ahead of what could prove to be a deciding match against Chile in the final round. The Aussies are winning the central midfield battle at the moment, and Louis van Gaal is likely to be considering introducing a bit more creativity for the second half.
Australia should be ahead! Mathew Leckie does superbly to beat his full-back and pull a dangerous cross back through the Holland area, but Mark Bresciano loses his cool at the crucial moment and blasts an unmarked shot over the bar.
It was a tight affair before those two goals lit up Porto Alegre, but the game has been a bit of a thriller since then, with both teams waking from their early slumber and committing plenty of players forward. The Dutch look the more dangerous (hardly surprisingly), but Australia are nowhere near the whipping boys that many expected them to be in this game.
If Robben's goal was special, Tim Cahill's effort was arguably the pick of the tournament's goals so far. Ryan McGowan's long ball forward was high and hopeful towards the head of Cahill, but the Australian forward was allowed to watch the ball all the way, and rather than head it decided to take it on first time with a crashing volley that flew past an astonished Jasper Cillessen before thundering in off the underside of the crossbar. What a goal!
There looked to be little danger when Arjen Robben was fed the ball inside his own half, but the Bayern Munich man dropped a shoulder to beat his marker and rode a pretty brutal foul to try and halt his run at the source. Robben's pace is well known, but his composure to stay in control of the ball right the way through the Australian half before dispatching into the far corner was even more impressive. It's another great goal to add to Holland's growing collection at this tournament.
The crowd had barely settled down after that brilliant Robben run and finish before Tim Cahill went one better with an absolute peach of a volley to pull Australia level. Wow! 1-1!
The Netherlands break the deadlock, and it is Arjen Robben who has got it with another hugely dangerous counter-attacking run and blistering finish. 1-0!
Holland have been sloppy in possession in the early stages, and the latest wayward pass sets up an attack that ends in Mark Bresciano's shot being deflected behind for a corner. That referee spots a push from Tim Cahill as the set-piece floats into the area, allowing the Netherlands to clear.
It has been an extremely tight game so far, with both teams flooding the midfield and not being able to keep hold of the ball for any extended period of time.
Australia are putting plenty of men on Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben, but that means that there is space slightly deeper for the Dutch to exploit. Daley Blind is the man taking advantage at the moment, with the Ajax full-back/holding midfielder seeing plenty of possession down the left.
Mathew Leckie bundles into Jasper Cillessen as the goalkeeper comes out to claim a wayward punt forward, and the Dutch stopper does well to drop the ball before he carries it out of his own area. That may well have been a foul had Leckie got anywhere near the loose ball, but as it is Cillessen gathers and clears.
There are plenty of tough players on the pitch, and the challenges are already flying in. Nigel de Jong is slightly fortunate to escape a booking for a tackle that saw him go right over the top of the ball, and as Holland clear the resulting free-kick it is Bruno Martins Indi who is caught by a sneaky late hit by Tim Cahill.
The Netherlands get the game underway, kitted out in their change kit of blue with orange trim. Australia are in their usual green and yellow (or 'gold', as the Aussies prefer to call it).
Tim Cahill will lead the line for Australia and will no doubt provide an aerial test for the Dutch centre-backs. Mile Jedinak will have a job to do against a combative Holland midfield. The front-three for the Netherlands will be allowed to roam and do their stuff, but there is a lack of creativity elsewhere in the team... with the exception of excellent left-back Daley Blind.
Confidence will not be a problem for the Dutch ahead of their Group B encounter with Australia later today. Holland's 5-1 demolition of the previously all-conquering Spanish was as remarkable as it was unexpected, but it would be hard to pick an opponent to pose such a contrasting challenge to Spain as today's opposition – the Socceroos. The Spanish high-line has always been vulnerable to pace and counter-attacking – which Holland highlighted so ruthlessly in Friday's spectacular victory – but Australia will sit deep, defend in numbers, and aim to frustrate the Dutch as much as they did to Chile in the 3-1 defeat. Defeat for the Aussies could see their predictable group-stage exit confirmed after just two games, whereas the Netherlands could become the first team to book a place in the second round with a win, depending on the result in the crucial Spain v Chile match that follows straight after.
