Cameroon vs. Croatia
Minute Commentary
90' CAMEROON 0-4 CROATIA
Croatia cruised to a 4-0 win in Manaus against a miserable Cameroon outfit who rarely looked a threat after Alex Song was sent off for an idiotic elbow in the back of Mario Mandzukic in the first half. Ivica Olic had opened the scoring for Croatia before the red card, and a Mandzukic brace and a strike by the superb Ivan Perisic secured a win that keeps Croatia's hopes of progressing to the knockout stages very much alive. Niko Kovac's side now go on to a crunch match against Mexico in the final round of Group A fixtures, while Cameroon's World Cup is over even before their meeting with the hosts. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in a Cameroon dressing room that seems to be falling apart at a frighteningly rapid pace, whereas (in stark contrast) Croatia's talented squad look united and confident of reaching the second round. In Manaus it finished ten-man Cameroon 0, Croatia 4.
89' OFF THE BAR!
A dipping Benoit Assou-Ekotto cross is met by Benjamin Moukandjo, but the forward's header bounces up on to the crossbar. That's the closest that Cameroon have come, and the spirit in the camp is summed up by a clash between the two players after the event in which Assou-Ekotto looked as if he tried to head-butt his own team-mate! Bizarre.
87' ALMOST A FIFTH
Mateo Kovacic finds himself in acres of space inside the Cameroon half, but his final pass makes it harder for Ivan Rakitic than it needed to be, and the former Sevilla captain can't quite get his dinked shot on target.
85' HARD TO TAKE
Cameroon's fans would have hoped for much more than they have been given in this World Cup. The 1-0 defeat to Mexico on the second day saw a lifeless display in a crucial match, but this has been much harder to watch ever since that needless and brainless Alex Song red card. Croatia have played at a canter for much of the second half, carving out chances whenever they feel like it.
80' CHAMPAGNE FOOTBALL
Croatia are pulling it all out of the bag now. Darijo Srna drifts a raking pass over the top of the Cameroon defence with the outside of his foot, but Charles Itandje comes charging off his line to head clear and deny Eduardo.
77' CHANGE FOR CROATIA
The outstanding Ivan Perisic goes off after a performance that will have alerted a number of clubs across Europe to his potential. Ante Rebic comes on in his place.
75' A SUBLIME TURN
Luka Modric dinks the ball over the head of Benjamin Moukandjo and sublimely turns into space. All the Cameroon midfielder can do in response is haul Modric to the floor, which does nothing to ease the pressure on his defence.
72' GOOOAAALLL!!
Mario Mandzukic bags his second of the night – Manaus is witnessing a rout! Eduardo is given so much time to line up a shot inside the box, and even a strong Charles Itandje palm can't save Cameroon as Mario Mandzukic follows it in to tuck home the rebound.
71' AND ANOTHER CHANGE
Sammir is replaced by the highly-rated Mateo Kovacic in midfield, which won't weaken Croatia one bit.
68' CHANGE FOR CROATIA
The tireless Ivica Olic is given a rest, with the Brazilian-born Eduardo coming on in his place to add yet more fire-power to the Croatian attack. Niko Kovac smells goals, which could really help his side if they end up relying on goal difference for a qualification place.
66' IMPRESSIVE RESOLVE
Cameroon haven't given up and are still pressing for the unlikeliest of comebacks. Vincent Aboubakar has been very lively, but his latest shot is nowhere near worrying Stipe Pletikosa between the sticks.
61' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Danijel Pranjic's corner is met by a thumping Mario Mandzukic header, and that really is game over. What a miserable evening for Cameroon!
60' PULLING THE STRINGS
Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic were being forced to defend deep for long periods of the first half, but the two playmakers are now free to show off their immense talent in the acres of space left by the departed Alex Song. It is only a matter of time before one of them gets an assist.
58' OVER THE BAR
Darijo Srna is a genuine set-piece specialist, but even he can't get the ball up over the wall and back down again from such close range. Charles Itandje is relieved to watch the shot fly over the bar.
56' A DANGEROUS POSITION
A wonderful Luka Modric pass threatens to put Ivan Perisic through on goal, but the winger's first touch forces him to cut back. Even after the heavy first touch, Perisic still has the quality to spin and draw a foul from his marker, earning Croatia a free-kick right on the edge of the area.
54' A GLIDING RUN
Ivan Rakitic is a joy to watch, with his blonde locks flowing behind him as he glides through challenge after challenge deep into the Cameroon half. Rakitic lays it off to Ivica Olic, which is where the beautiful football comes to an end.
51' A DECENT HIT
Dany Nounkeu tries to do a Tim Cahill with a first-time volley on an angle, but (unlike Cahill) the full-back can't quite keep his shot down.
49' SHOULD BE THREE
Croatia are rampant, and Mario Mandzukic really should make it 3-0 as he bursts clean through on goal, only to take too long and allow the defenders to get back and rush him into chipping a shot wide. That was a glorious opportunity, but you get the sense that it won't be his last.
47' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Ivan Perisic scores a superb goal to make it 2-0 to Croatia and surely wrap up the win. The winger burst forward down the left, leaving the substitute Dany Nounkeu for dead, before fooling Charles Itandje and shooting into the far corner rather than squaring for Mario Mandzukic. It's a terrific goal by a terrific player.
46' SECOND HALF
The game is back underway. Cameroon made a change at the break, bringing on Dany Nounkeu for Aurelien Chedjou.
45' HALF-TIME
An Ivica Olic tap-in and a moment of madness from Alex Song have given Croatia a golden opportunity to keep their World Cup alive. Both of these teams went into the game knowing that only a win would be enough to prevent them exiting the tournament at the first hurdle, and they both started well. But Croatia's quality shone through as Ivan Perisic picked out Olic to slot home an early goal. Cameroon threatened to get back into it through Vincent Aboubakar and Stephane M'Bia, but the European side were already well on top when Alex Song elbowed Mario Mandzukic in the back off the ball to earn himself a straight red card and leave Cameroon facing an almost impossible task in the second half.
44' A BIG ASK FOR CAMEROON
The conditions were always going to be a test for Cameroon in tonight's game, especially against a team as comfortable in possession as Croatia, but now that they are missing one of their most experienced midfielders it will take a monumental effort for them to come from behind and get a result.
39' RED CARD!
Ivan Perisic is furious as play is pulled back as he tears into the Cameroon half, but it all becomes clear as the referee shows a red card to Alex Song. The midfielder elbowed a player off the ball as he struggled to get back to cover that counter attack, and the referee had no choice but to send him off.
35' SHOULD HAVE DONE BETTER
Charles Itandje gives away a needless corner, but Ivan Perisic fails to make him pay as the midfielder hammers an unmarked header well over the crossbar.
32' MBIA TAKES TOO LONG
Cameroon have threatened in patches, particularly on the break, but will need to show greater composure than Stephane M'Bia manages as he delays a shot from a tight angle for so long that Dejan Lovren has time to saunter over to him and make a block.
26' A TOP-DRAWER MIDFIELD
There are few, if any, midfields in the competition with as much quality as Croatia's. The Luka Modric/Ivan Rakitic combination combines composure, vision and workrate, and the two will face off against each other in next season's Clasicos after Rakitic was confirmed as a Barcelona signing this week.
24' IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY
There was a lot of pressure on Croatia going into this game, but so far they have stood up and delivered. With Mexico now on four points, the group looks likely to come down to the final match between the two... as long as Croatia win this game. Cameroon are struggling to deal with the phenomenal midfield of Croatia at the moment, so a win seems likely, particularly with the heat likely to take its toll as the game progresses.
20' MODRIC RECEIVES TREATMENT
Luka Modric has picked up a knock, but the Real Madrid midfielder looks as if he'll be fine to continue.
16' A GOLDEN CHANCE
Charles Itandje makes a real hash of what should have been a routine save, but Ivan Perisic can't react quickly enough and fails to turn home from five yards. That should have been 2-0, but the way the game is going it won't be long until Croatia do manage to extend their lead.
14' CROATIA FIND ANOTHER GEAR
The Europeans took their time to find the pace of the game – which is maybe understandable given the heat and humidity in Manaus – but have really got into their groove now. Cameroon are struggling to cling on, and Darijo Srna is being left in acres of space down the right every time Croatia attack.
10' GOOOAAALLL!!!
Ivica Olic opens the scoring with a close-range finish after Ivan Perisic's clever pass put it on a plate for the wide man. That's exactly the start that Croatia would have been looking for.
9' END-TO-END
Both teams have looked lively so far, and only an excellent last-ditch tackle by Stephane M'Bia denies Ivica Olic a clear run on goal.
5' TERRIFIC START BY CAMEROON
The Africans were extremely poor in their opening defeat to Mexico, but look like a different animal in the opening minutes of this encounter. Vincent Aboubakar has been extremely lively up top.
1' KICK-OFF
The game is underway in Manaus. Mario Mandzukic does return for Croatia as expected, but Cameroon are without Samuel Eto'o (although that may not be such a bad thing in truth, with the striker often being at the centre of problems within the squad).
0' ALL SET FOR KICK-OFF
How do you follow that?! Spain's defeat to Chile and elimination from the tournament after just two games isn't just the shock of this World Cup... it is arguably the biggest shock in international football history. Croatia and Cameroon have a tough act to follow, but this is a winner-takes-all clash, so expect a good game.
0' THE CHEEK OF IT
The bad mood of the Croatian squad got a whole lot worse over the weekend, with some cheeky pictures making their way into the papers of a number of the players showing how comfortable they are in each other's company (very!) by enjoying a skinny-dip in their private hotel pool. In a furious reaction to the hinie…ous crime of the photos not only being taken, but also published, Croatia banned all further interaction with their nation's media ahead of today's game. Niko Kovac will make at least one change, with striker Mario Mandzukic aiming to show all that he's got as he returns from suspension, and Kovac could also change things in midfield by freeing up Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic to wave their magic wands further up the pitch. That sort of naked ambition may be exactly what Croatia need to break down the Cameroon defence, but Kovac will hope that his midfielders don't get too cocky and leave their ageing defence over-exposed. There will be no more… I promise!
0' CAMEROON V CROATIA
A couple of questionable refereeing decisions have left Croatia bottom of Group B and in danger of crashing out of the World Cup early, despite impressing in the tournament opener against Brazil on Thursday. The Croatians came to the World Cup as favourites to progress to the second round along with the host nation from this group, but defeat today would be enough to confirm their departure from the competition. A positive for the eastern Europeans will be that today's opponents, Cameroon, were hugely disappointing against Mexico on Friday and will need to improve massively if it is not to be they who become the first African nation to fail to reach the second round.
