Belgium vs. Algeria
Minute Commentary
A second half comeback earned Belgium a crucial win in the opening game of Group H. A foul by Jan Vertonghen and clinically finished penalty by Sofiane Feghouli gave Algeria the first-half goal that they wanted in order to sit deep and frustrate the Belgians… and frustrate them they did. There was so little space in the final third for Belgium to work with that they were forced to resort to pot-shots and hopeful punts forward in a lacklustre first 45. Marc Wilmots responded by bringing on Dries Mertens for Nacer Chadli at the break, and – as Algeria's well-drilled defence continued to hold firm – Wilmots also introduced the pace of Divock Origi and aerial presence of Marouane Fellaini with plenty of time left on the clock. Fellaini was the man who found the crucial equaliser, heading home Kevin de Bruyne's pinpoint delivery, and Mertens made it two goals from the substitutes with an emphatic finish after Eden Hazard had found him in space on the counter-attack. In truth it was the right result on balance, with Belgium playing all of the decent football, but Algeria will fancy their chances against Russia and South Korea on the evidence of today's well-organised performance. In Mineirao it finished Algeria 1, Belgium 2.
Belgium's players and supporters celebrate a hard-earned win as the final whistle goes in Mineirao.
Marouane Fellaini loses his footing at just the wrong moment after taking a Divock Origi dinked pass down on his chest inside the area. That was a lovely bit of skill by the instantly recognisable midfielder, and it is a shame that he couldn't stay on his feet long enough to get the shot away.
Nabil Bentaleb shows his inexperience as he clips the heels of Eden Hazard with a challenge that didn't need to be made. Belgium can't make the most of the resulting set-piece, but they've found their va-va-voom in the second half after those changes by Marc Wilmots added some pace and creativity in the final third. Algeria are out on their feet.
Marouane Fellaini is a fantastic man to have on the bench, and the midfielder's aerial threat has played a huge role in dragging Belgium back into this game. The Manchester United midfielder almost bags his second of the night, but Rais M'Bolhi palms over the bar before flapping the resulting corner clear.
Dries Mertens puts Belgium into the lead! The relief is palpable in the Belgian ranks as they pile on in celebration down in the corner. Kevin de Bruyne's interception allowed Eden Hazard some space to attack on the break, and the Chelsea man showed a cool head to switch the ball to the unmarked Dries Mertens. Thankfully for Belgium, Mertens had the pace and finishing ability to burst into the area and smash past Rais M'Bolhi. 2-1!
Belgium know how much they need a win today, and the reaction of first Vertonghen to some Algerian time-wasting and then Dries Mertens for (what he sees as) a questionable free-kick decision gives away the tension in their ranks.
Algeria have a big decision to make. Do they try to hold on for a point now that Belgium have their tails up, or do they mix it up and go in search of regaining the lead? First impressions are that they will opt for the former.
Marouane Fellaini has pulled Belgium level! The Europeans have done very little creatively on the floor, so it is no surprise that the goal comes from the aerial route. Kevin de Bruyne is left in acres of space to bend in a cross, and Fellaini does brilliantly to flick a back-header over the keeper and into the net. 1-1. Game on!
Marc Wilmots has responded quickly to the state of the game, and the introduction of Marouane Fellaini is the last of his three changes. Moussa Dembele makes way.
Jan Vertonghen dives into a tackle out on the touchline and is pinged by the referee, which is a needless risk considering that he's already on a booking.
Divock Origi comes on for Belgium, replacing the disappointing Romelu Lukaku. This has not been the ideal game for a big target-man, and Marc Wilmots is probably saving his striker for later matches whilst also introducing more creativity to the attack.
Carl Medjani's header flies inches wide of the Belgium goal as Algeria go extremely close to adding to their lead. The Belgians could hardly have dreamt of a worse start to their World Cup campaign.
Algeria have shown little attacking intent in this game, but on their first attack of the second half they very nearly find Sofiane Feghouli in space inside the area, only for Vincent Kompany to make a terrific clearing header.
Belgium made a change at the break, with Dries Mertens replacing Nacer Chadli, and the new man has immediately made an impact. His run and driven cross almost picked out Romelu Lukaku, and it has been a feature of the second half that Kevin de Bruyne is finding plenty of space in his new central role.
The whistle goes to end a very disappointing first 45 minutes for Belgium. There was so much hope for the star-studded Belgians ahead of the tournament, but they will need to sharpen up quickly if they are to avoid defeat against a disciplined and defensively excellent Algerian outfit. A piece of slack defending from Jan Vertonghen gifted Sofiane Feghouli the chance to put Algeria ahead from the spot, and with the lead the Africans have sat back even deeper to shut down the space for Eden Hazard and co. More tempo and maybe a few changes are needed for the second half for Belgium, whereas Algeria will be looking to keep it tight for the remaining 45 minutes.
Belgium have noticeably sped up their passing in the final third, and it is allowing Eden Hazard some space to work in before his markers can react. That's more like it. More of the same in the second half please.
Eden Hazard finds himself in some space for the first time in the game and feeds Nacer Chadli inside the box, but Chadli gets the ball stuck under his feet and can't quite connect properly with a shot that is well-saved by Rais M'Bolhi.
Nacer Chadli goes for goal from miles out, and the midfielder's effort bounces harmlessly wide of Rais M'Bolhi's net. Belgium are looking nervous, and there's a sense that too many of their players are trying to deliver something spectacular on the World Cup stage rather than staying patient and unlocking Algeria with a quicker passing game.
Jan Vertonghen was teed up for a pile-driver, but his effort rose over the bar, over the wall, and continued to rise as it headed towards the fans behind the goal. It was well struck by the defender, but maybe a bit more guile was needed.
Toby Alderweireld tries to join in with the attack from distance and is taken down within shooting range. Kevin de Bruyne and Jan Vertonghen are standing over the ball.
Belgium are really struggling to find space in the final third, with Algeria defending so deep that it is shutting Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku out of the game. Maybe Marc Wilmots will want to switch it at half-time. He has options, with Marouane Fellaini, Adnan Januzaj and Kevin Mirallas offering a variety of different approaches to unlocking the Africans.
Nabil Bentaleb was caught be a stray arm from his club colleague Moussa Dembele moments ago, and the youngster puts an elbow back in on Dembele in the next challenge between the two. It's a deserved booking, but that could have been more if the referee had seen it clearly.
Belgium are back in control of the game, but are still yet to create anything. Algeria are quick to ensure that there are ten players behind the ball as much as possible, and the wall of white-shirted defenders is proving tough to break down.
Sofiane Feghouli slots home the spot-kick and Algeria have a shock lead.
Jan Vertonghen is caught slightly out of position and pulls back Sofiane Feghouli inside the area. It's a penalty to Algeria and a yellow card for Vertonghen.
Moussa Dembele tees up Axel Witsel for a shot from distance, and the holding midfielder very nearly nets the first thunderbolt of the tournament, forcing Rais M'Bolhi into a smart save. Romelu Lukaku can't quite manage to latch on to the rebound.
Riyad Mahrez goes for goal from a narrow angle when he really should have held on to the ball and waited for support. Algeria aren't going to have many attacking platforms on the evidence of the opening quarter of an hour, so are going to need to show more composure than that.
There has been very little space for Belgium in the final third, and Daniel van Buyten sums up their frustration by striding out from the back and going for goal from miles out. It is comfortably blocked and Algeria clear.
Neither of these teams have managed to give the local fans much to shout about... so the supporters decide to make some entertainment of their own with a very loud and boisterous Mexican Wave.
The Africans have done superbly in the opening minutes of the game, controlling the midfield battle and looking pretty secure at the back so far.
Belgium haven't managed to string together a decent number of passes yet, with Algeria looking the more composed and less nervous of the two teams.
Algeria get the game underway and keep the ball for the opening minute in an attempt to deny Belgium the opportunity to get a feel for their first World Cup football for well over a decade.
The teams emerge from the tunnel in Mineirao and belt out their respective anthems. Group H is ready for kick-off.
The starting line-up for Belgium today is oozing with quality. The only weakness in the squad is that there are no natural top-quality full-backs, but with Tottenham Hotspur's Jan Vertonghen and Atletico Madrid's Toby Alderweireld switching out there it completes a formidable defensive four ahead of arguably the world's in-form goalkeeper in Thibaut Courtois. Romelu Lukaku will lead the attack in the absence of the injured Christian Benteke, while Eden Hazard will provide the spark in a midfield packed with top level players. It's a phenomenal line-up on paper. Will they deliver?
Algeria will look to the likes of Faouzi Ghoulam, Saphir Taider and Nabil Bentaleb to provide the quality that they have shown in Europe's top leagues this season, but defensive solidity and pace on the break will be the key to them upsetting Belgium today.
Belgium have been tipped as dark horses for this tournament for so long that they seem to have transcended that title. One look at the team-sheet and it isn't hard to see why the Belgians are being so heavily tipped for this and future international titles. However, Africa's highest-ranked team at the tournament will be no pushovers in the opening game of the only group yet to play at Brazil 2014 – Group H.
