Ghana vs. United States
Minute Commentary
90' USA 2-1 GHANA
The USA delivered the ultimate smash-and-grab to beat Ghana 2-1 in this crucial Group G clash. Clint Dempsey scored inside the opening minute to give the USA the platform they wanted to defend deep and frustrate Ghana, which they did successfully for much of the game. Ghana were the better side throughout, excellent in possession and constantly delivering crosses into the American box, but it took until deep into the second half for the Black Stars to show enough quality and composure to find a goal – Andre Ayew finishing after Asamoah Gyan's genius back-heel. If any team looked likely to snatch a winner at that point it was Ghana, but Fabian Johnson chased down a lost cause to win a corner for the USA with five minutes left on the clock, and John Brooks was left unmarked to powerfully head home from Graham Zusi's set-piece. Matt Besler and Jozy Altidore both went off with hamstring injuries for the USA, which will be a concern for later in the tournament, but they have given themselves a chance ahead of Sunday's massive game against Portugal. For Ghana, their chances of reaching the knockout stages have taken a huge blow. In Natal it finished Ghana 1, USA 2.
The final whistle goes to spark wild celebrations on the USA bench and amongst the vast numbers of travelling American fans.
Ghana are camped inside the USA final third... as they have been for much of the game, but poor decision-making sees Sulley Muntari shoot wildly over from distance when there were plenty of options in the box. Ghana have only themselves to blame if they lose this game.
Sulley Muntari has been poor today, and he goes in with a rash challenge on Clint Dempsey after his own poor control gave possession to the American. The referee has little choice but to brandish the yellow.
There will be five minutes of added time. Five!
Ghana have pressed all game for their equaliser, but didn't do enough to shut down John Brooks from that corner and look to have paid the price. Time is running out for another comeback... but this is Brazil 2014, so you never know!
John Brooks grabs an unlikely second for the USA! What a suckerpunch for Ghana, but what a header by the defender. Fabian Johnson did well to win a corner from a lost cause and Brooks met Graham Zusi's corner with a well-directed header down and past Adam Kwarasey. 2-1!
Ghana have been the better team for almost the entire game, and now that they have found the equaliser you fear that the USA may struggle to prevent them from going on and snatching a winner.
The USA's brave resistance is finally broken as Andre Ayew slams home a great finish after a delightful back-heel by Asamoah Gyan wrong-footed the entire defence. 1-1 and game on!
The USA finally have an attack of note, but it just won't sit for Fabian Johnson to have a shot. Clint Dempsey takes control of the move, but his effort is comfortably saved by Adam Kwarasey.
Both teams make changes. Graham Zusi replaces Alejandro Bedoya for the USA, while Albert Adomah comes on for the sparky but frustrating Christian Atsu in the Ghana midfield.
The Ghana attacks are relentless now, but nobody can get on the end of Kwadwo Asamoah's brilliant cross from the left as America cling on again.
Mohammed Rabiu goes off to be replaced by the familiar figure of Michael Essien. The midfielder missed the 2010 World Cup through injury and age has diminished his immense talent since then, but he still remains a footballer capable of dominating even the best opponents on his day… it is just that his day arrives with less frequency than it did during his pomp.
The scoreboard still reads 1-0 to the USA, but the Africans are completely dominant now and look more and more likely to force an equaliser. In truth, America have done very little in attack since the opening minute, and in midfield it has been the white shirts of Ghana who have controlled the game. Jurgen Klinsmann's coaching skills mean that the USA won't mind sitting deep and defending in numbers, but there's only so long that they will be able to hang on before Ghana get a really gilt-edged opportunity.
Asamoah Gyan is becoming more and more involved, and only a brilliant block by Geoff Cameron denies him from close range. From the resulting corner Kevin-Prince Boateng tries a first-time volley that he can't keep down.
Jermaine Jones is given time and space within shooting range, and his shot is powerful enough to force Adam Kwarasey to spill out. Nobody is following up to compete for the rebound.
Again Christian Atsu goes for goal, and again he shoots off target. The youngster has a lot of talent, but this hasn't been a great game for him.
Jordan Ayew makes way for Kevin-Prince Boateng, who is exactly the sort of player that Ghana have needed to unlock this USA defence. He has the spark and quality on the ball that the Black Stars have been lacking in the final third.
Asamoah Gyan leaps like a salmon to get on the end of a Jordan Ayew cross, and only a great save by Tim Howard denies Ghana the equaliser. The USA are clinging on.
Asamoah Gyan is picked out unmarked in the box, but he can't keep his header down. It is all Ghana now, but they still can't quite carve out the chance they need to force an equaliser.
Sulley Muntari goes for goal from distance, but for once it is a dangerous effort. Tim Howard looked very concerned as Muntari's fizzing drive curled inches wide.
Christian Atsu has looked lively all game, but his final choice has been consistently poor. Again he chooses the wrong option, shooting well wide when well-placed to find a team-mate on the edge of the area.
Daniel Opare shows a pair of jet heels to keep a Ghana attack alive, but Jermaine Jones does well to put in a timely tackle, and it is Jones again who blocks the resulting cross.
The game is back underway, and the USA have made a change. John Brooks is on, with Matt Besler going off. Besler looked to have a slight hamstring niggle towards the end of the first half, which would explain the change.
45' GHANA 0-1 USA
Clint Dempsey's strike after just 33 seconds has given the USA a 1-0 lead in their crunch clash with Ghana in Group G. Dempsey nutmegged his marker before sliding a shot past Adam Kwarasey and in off the far post to record the fifth-fastest goal in World Cup history... but from that moment on the USA have been second best. Ghana are a quality side, with clear attacking threat through Christian Atsu and the Ayew brothers behind Asamoah Gyan, but the USA defence has been faultless in the air and has protected the 1-0 lead - allowing the Americans a platform to play on the break. However, a hamstring injury for Jozy Altidore will rule the striker out for the rest of the tournament and has denied them their most obvious outlet on the break for the remainder of this game. Ghana will look to up the pace with which they move the ball in the second half and continue to attack the USA's vulnerable left flank, but greater composure is the key if the Black Stars are to get back into this game against a well-organised USA defence.
The whistle goes to send USA in at half-time with a 1-0 lead.
Jordan Ayew is picked out unmarked inside the area at the end of a Ghana break, but he makes a poor connection with the shot to give the USA a huge let-off. That should have been the equaliser.
Sulley Muntari goes in with a horribly rash challenge on Jermaine Jones, who catches the Ghanaian with his studs on the follow-through. Both players escape a booking, but Muntari should have got one for the initial lunge.
The USA break and Aron Johannsson threads a lovely ball out wide to create a chance that Clint Dempsey can't quite get on the end of. And, after Johannsson miscues with an effort from the edge of the box, Ghana launch a break of their own. Asamoah Gyan does brilliantly to keep the ball in, but Christian Atsu's resulting cross drifts over everybody in the box and out for a goal-kick.
Ghana are controlling the game, yet aren't creating many clear chances. The crosses are coming in from far too deep to cause the USA defence much trouble, and the Black Stars aren't really getting in behind the American back-line. Jurgen Klinsmann will be very happy with the way this is going.
33' OUCH!
Clint Dempsey goes up for a header and is caught by the shin of an off-balance John Boye directly in the nose! There's plenty of claret on the face of the American as a result, who receives lengthy treatment from the physios in an attempt to stem the flow. That looked very painful, albeit unintentional, but he will be fine to continue once he's cleaned up.
Asamoah Gyan twists into space on the edge of the box and forces Tim Howard to make a comfortable save low down to his left.
Mohammed Rabiu goes up for a challenge with Kyle Beckerman and is adjudged to have caught him with a stray arm, earning the midfielder a booking. That's a little harsh.
Kyle Beckerman fouls Kwadwo Asamoah, but the referee allows play to run and Christian Atsu curls a shot narrowly wide. Ghana would probably have rather had the free-kick there.
Ghana are having so much luck down their right, and almost work a goal from another attack down that side, only for Matt Besler to slice Daniel Opare's cross over his own bar. That could have gone anywhere, but Asamoah Gyan was waiting behind the defender so he had to get a touch.
A deep corner picks out John Boye at the back post, but the defender's effort never looked like troubling Tim Howard in the USA goal.
Jozy Altidore leaves the field on a stretcher and on comes Aron Johannsson.
Jozy Altidore tries to beat John Boye to a long punt upfield, but the striker pulls up with a hand on his hamstring and immediately signals to be replaced. That's his tournament over, which is such a shame for the big man.
A wayward cross finds its way through to Jozy Altidore, but the striker directs his finish towards the near post, allowing the two covering defenders to combine and make the block. If Altidore had gone far post it would have been 2-0.
Ghana have responded brilliantly to that early sucker-punch and are dominating the game now. A deep cross by Daniel Opare causes panic in the USA defence, but it is just too high for the leaping Asamoah Gyan.
Christian Atsu is slid in behind the American defence, once again down that right side, but Tim Howard comes steaming off his line to win the race to the ball.
Christian Atsu fails to hold his run and is caught offside down the Ghana right, but that is where all the space is for both teams and the Africans are clearly trying to switch the ball out there early in an effort to isolate the American full-back. Jurgen Klinsmann needs to respond quickly and get some cover over on that side before Ghana make them pay.
We've had our dud game in Iran v Nigeria, and now Brazil 2014 looks to be back on track. It has been a sparkling start to this game, with both teams playing open and attacking football full of pace and aggression. The USA are having plenty of joy down the left, with Jermaine Jones overlapping Clint Dempsey, but defensively there's some vulnerability down that side too.
John Boye was skinned by Dempsey for the goal, and his game doesn't get much better as his attacking header drifts harmlessly wide of Tim Howard's goal. In fairness to the defender he was given plenty to do by a very poor Sulley Muntari delivery.
Ghana switched off from the kick-off, but credit to the USA for starting with such a high tempo. They are finding plenty of space down the left, which is where the attack that led to the goal came from.
What a start! Clint Dempsey weaves his way into the penalty area before drilling a shot in off the far post. It's 1-0 to the USA after just 30 seconds!
USA get the game underway.
The two sets of players emerge from the tunnel and belt out the anthems – ably assisted by a packed Arena das Dunas. We're all set for kick-off.
There is plenty of quality in the Ghana line-up, but the surprise news is that both Michael Essien and Kevin-Prince Boateng have been left on the bench. The USA will again be looking for the trio of Clint Dempsey, Alejandro Bedoya and Michael Bradley to play off Jozy Altidore – who himself will be hoping that he doesn't carry his club form into the international game after a poor season at Sunderland.
Ghana have knocked the USA out in the last two World Cups. The Black Stars won 2-1 in the final group game in 2006 to go through at America's expense, and four years ago it was an extra-time strike from Asamoah Gyan that sent Ghana into a quarter-final against Uruguay… which ended in heart-breaking fashion for the Africans.
Germany were hugely impressive in their 4-0 win over Portugal earlier today, but Portugal look vulnerable as the second favourites to progress. There is a chance for either USA or Ghana to join Germany in the latter stages, but they must start with a win in this game before going on to play the two highly-rated European sides.
The USA kick off their World Cup campaign against Ghana in Natal tonight, with both teams eyeing qualification from arguably the closest thing Brazil 2014 has to a ‘Group of Death'. A rainy season deluge that flooded streets and caused the evacuation of a number of buildings in the city has failed to dampen the spirits of the fans travelling to this early Group G fixture, and hopefully the game itself will live up to the big build-up and not succumb to the conditions. The USA arrive at the tournament in high spirits after qualifying well, but Ghana will be hoping to repeat their impressive World Cup showing of four years ago and make it into the latter stages once again. If either of these nations want to progress from the group then this game is a must win!
