Ivory Coast vs. Japan
Minute Commentary
90' DAWN OF DROGBA INSPIRES IVORIANS
The second half introduction of Didier Drogba sparked a brilliant comeback as Ivory Coast battled back from 1-0 down to beat Japan 2-1 at the Arena Pernambuco, Recife. First Wilfried Bony, who had missed several previous chances, buried a glancing header from Serge Aurier's cross, and two minutes later the same player crossed for Gervinho to head home. Drogba was not directly involved in the goals, but his very presence created the confidence that ensured his teammates finally found the target. Japan had taken the lead early on when Keisuke Honda smashed home a superb opener, although both sides enjoyed several excellent opportunities as the game progressed. Ivory Coast looked comfortable after scoring the second, but before their goals they appeared decidedly shaky. Colombia will fancy their chances against them, but for now the glory is with Sabri Lamouchi's side, who join their South American opponents on three points.
90' FULL TIME IVORY COAST 2 JAPAN 1
The full time whistle rings out in Recife, where Ivory Coast have come from behind to beat Japan 2-1.
90' MAN DOWN
Now Ya Konan is helped from the pitch, which is unfortunate as Ivory Coast have used up all of their substitutions. With only moments remaining, it shouldn't matter anyway.
90' TIOTE THE TIME-WASTER
Cheick Tiote has been stretchered from the field, but all present suspect that the Newcastle midfielder's injury concerns are solely about running down the clock.
90' FOUR MINUTES
It's been confirmed that four minutes of stoppage time are to be played, a development that will encourage Japan but almost certainly will prove not enough to bring them back from the brink in this game.
89' COUNTER CULTURE
A lightning-quick counter leads to Salomon Kalou scampering free on the right wing and heading for goal, eventually unleashing a shot from an extremely tight angle that the goalkeeper manages to push away from danger.
86' SUBSTITUTION
Alberto Zaccheroni's third and final roll of the dice sees Kagawa retire to the bench, to be replaced by Yoichiro Kakitani.
85' DRAG FOR DROGBA
Didier Ya Konan glances up in midfield and drifts a long pass over the heads of the defence for Kalou to chase. The forward checks back inside his marker and plays a square ball to Drogba, who drags his shot wide from the edge of the box when it looked easier to hit the target.
82' DROGBA CLASSIC
A Yoshida foul gifts Ivory Coast a free kick just outside the penalty area. It looks tailor-made for Didier Drogba, who bends the set-piece over the static wall to force a diving save from Kawashima.
80' JAPAN STILL PRESSING
The Blue Samurai haven't given up yet. Keisuke Honda continues to probe Ivory Coast's defences; on this occasion he turns on a sixpence to set up Shinji Kagawa, whose snapshot from the edge of the box is deflected off Zokora's back and through to Barry.
78' SUBSTITUTION
Bony, who may just have scored the winning goal, makes way for Didier Ya Konan.
77' SNATCHED EFFORT
Toure snatches at a loose ball bouncing around on the 18-yard line to arrow a shot comfortably wide of the left-hand post.
75' SUBSTITUTION
The stricken Boka is replaced by Constant Djakpa.
73' BOKA INJURED
Arthur Boka is sadly stretchered from the pitch after picking up an injury. That's most certainly the end of the Ivory Coast man's night, and let's hope not the end of his tournament.
70' PENALTY DENIED
Okazaki controls Honda's pass inside the area, but his touch is loose and Kalou pops up to flatten the Mainz forward. The ref is uninterested, and strangely the Japan players choose not to protest what looked like a decent shout for a penalty.
67' SUBSTITUTION
Yoshito Okubo replaces Osako for Japan.
66' GOAL!!! IVORY COAST
The game has been well and truly turned on its head inside the space of two incredible minutes. Gervinho plays a one-two with Wilfried Bony and then passes to Serge Aurier, who again supplies a superb cross from the right flank. This time it's GERVINHO who meets the ball at the near post with a downwards header to the near post; Eiji Kawashima gets down to the effort but can't prevent it from crossing the line.
64' GOAL!!! IVORY COAST
Serge Aurier receives a ball out to the right and delivers a tremendous cross from deep. WILFRIED BONY, as if inspired by the presence of Didier Drogba, gets a cross his marker to dive and flick a perfect header inside the far post with Eiji Kawashima helpless.
64' YELLOW CARD
Masato Morishige is shown a yellow card for a late and unnecessary challenge, meaning that both Japan centre backs now occupy the referee's notebook.
62' SUBSTITUTION
Cometh the hour, cometh the man. The crowd go wild as Didier Drogba takes to the pitch, with Serey Die the man to make way. Immediately the Ivory Coast totem sets up Gervinho with a deft backheel, but as usual the latter fails to find the target.
60' JUST WIDE FROM KALOU
Salomon Kalou shows a burst of pace to make his way inside from the right wing and shoot low from 30 yards, the effort finishing up mere millimetres wide of the left-hand post.
58' YELLOW CARD
Didier Zokora is booked for protesting over-zealously about the refusal of that penalty appeal.
57' NO PENALTY
Yaya Toure drives into the penalty area with a trademark surging run, only to be felled by a combination of Yoshida and his own feet. That could easily have been given as a penalty, but Enrique Osses says nothing doing.
54' YELLOW CARD
Shinji Okazaki is just too quick for Bamba, who sticks out a leg to bring his opponent crashing to the turf. A yellow card is the defender's reward.
54' SUBSTITUTION
Hasebe, who only recently recovered from injury, is replaced by veteran Yasuhito Endo in the game's first change.
51' INTO ROW Z
Space opens up for Hotaru Yamaguchi, who elects to go for goal from a long way out and ends up blasting a shot high into the stands.
50' STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER
Hasebe moves inside from the left flank and sends Die the wrong way with a drop of the shoulder, but the Japan captain can only shoot straight at Barry.
48' WHAT A MISS
Wilfried Bony buried header after header in the Premier League this season, but he misses an absolute sitter as Die puts it on a plate for the 25-year-old. At least Ivory Coast look capable of getting back into this game.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are out and the second half is underway, with neither side having made any changes as yet.
45' THE HONDA DIFFERENCE
A moment of magic from Keisuke Honda has proved the difference so far as these two sides ripped chunks out of each other in a hugely entertaining first half. The miniature playmaker controlled a low ball into the box with his right foot before smashing a left-footed effort into the top corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance. Atsuto Uchida came close soon after that with a close-range effort that Boubacar Barry beat away, but their opponents created and spurned their own opportunities. Wilfired Bony and Salomon Kalou were wasteful with decent chances, while Yaya Toure and Arthur Boka sent free kicks sailing over the crossbar. Japan deserve their lead, but this game is finely balanced and could easily tip Ivory Coast's way. Stay tuned for all the action from the second half.
45' HALF TIME IVORY COAST 0 JAPAN 1
It's half time here in Recife, where Japan lead Ivory Coast by one precious goal to nil.
45' TOO TIGHT FOR BOKA
Boka, who is seeing plenty of the ball in attacking areas, evades two defenders to shoot from a tight angle. The left back strikes it well but is unable to trouble Kawashima at his near post.
43' NOWHERE NEAR
Arthur Boka overlaps on the left wing and finds the space to send an impressive cross into the area. Kalou meets it at the near post with a diving header, but gets it all wrong to miss by a country mile.
42' KALOU SOLDIERS ON
There's an injury worry for the Elephants as Salomon Kalou clutches the back of his knee following a stretch for the ball, but the former Chelsea man is soon back charging around the pitch.
39' BONY OFF TARGET
Serey Die, faced up by Yuto Nagatomo, elects to cross towards the lurking Bony. The striker volleys for goal, but can't get his body shape right and his effort loops way over the bar.
36' END TO END ACTION
There's chances at both ends as the action shows no sign of letting up. An Ivory Coast corner is cleared only as far as Boka, who fizzes in a 30-yard drive that Eiji Kawashima can only parry. Wilfried Bony pounces on the rebound but is immediately flagged offside. Honda then slaloms his way through midfield to go for goal from just outside the area, with only a desperate Souleymane Bamba block diverting the effort away from goal.
34' QUICK THINKING
A quick turnover of possession sees Serge Aurier find Bony with a forward pass, the striker in turn locating the sprinting Gervinho with a through ball. The former Arsenal man bears down on goal but is foiled by Maya Yoshida, who does well to stick with his opponent all the way.
31' SURPRISE ATTACK
Arthur Boka fools everybody in the stadium by taking the free kick ahead of Toure, sending a wicked curler over the defensive wall and only just over the bar.
30' AN OPEN AFFAIR
From a cagey start, this has exploded into a wonderfully open game. Gervinho again finds space through the middle and weaves his way through, only to be felled by Yuya Osako's barge. Another chance to go for goal for Yaya Toure.
27' THE HAND OF JAPAN
Toure gallops forward with the ball at his feet and almost makes it all the way to goal, only to find his final ball to Gervinho blocked by Makoto Hasebe's hand. Toure howls for a penalty, but the arm was by the defender's side and it would have been harsh. Moments later Salomon Kalou plays a deft one-two with Toure but can only steer his 20-yard shot into the stands.
24' TOURE'S FRUSTRATION
Yaya Toure stands over the resulting free kick with a look of utmost concentration on his face, but it's all for naught as the midfielder's effort sails yards over the bar and his expression quickly changes to frustration.
23' YELLOW CARD
Maya Yoshida resorts to a clumsy late challenge to halt Serge Aurier's enterprising forward run, earning the Southampton defender the game's first booking.
21' JAPAN LAY IT ON THICK
Japan look rampant now. First Atsuto Uchida dribbles into the box at speed and drives in a shot that Boubacar Barry is forced to beat desperately away, before a cross from the right by Honda nearly drops under the beleaguered keeper's crossbar. In the end Barry takes a step back to push the effort skywards.
19' MULTIPLE SCORER
That sweet strike means that Honda becomes the first Japanese player to score at more than one World Cup.
16' GOAL!!! JAPAN
Japan had been looking more threatening over the last few minutes, and the pressure makes its mark. KEISUKE HONDA controls a low cross into the penalty area with his right foot and rips a shot into the top corner with his left before the defence can even react. What a superb opening goal.
14' SAVED BY THE CLOCK
Cheick Tiote crashes into Shinji Okazaki as the Japan player rises high to win an aerial ball. That looked a painful one, and Tiote is surely saved from a booking only by the number on the clock.
12' SUPER SUPPORTERS
As has been the trend at this World Cup (and many others before it), there are some superb sights in the crowd. Ivory Coast have what appears to be a 20-man choir and dance troupe on their side, and the enthusiasm is seriously infectious. It's just a pity that the rain is now coming down in sheets.
9' LIMITED AMBITION
The structure of this game has already emerged blinking into the sunlight. Ivory Coast have had all of the ball, while their opponents appear content to sit back in their own half and burst out on the counter-attack when the chance arises. If that's all Japan plan on doing it'll be a shame, as they certainly possess the ability to play this game on their own terms.
6' BONY THREATENING
Ivory Coast cut through their opponents with speed and precision as Gervinho collects the ball and slots it behind the defence for the marauding Wilfried Bony. The Swansea striker swivels on the spot to lash a first-time effort into the side-netting.
4' FIRST ATTACK
Yaya Toure strides forward and threads a ball through the midfield to Salomon Kalou, who tries to find Gervinho with a looped cross to the back post. Masato Morishige gets across to nod it behind. Kalou takes the corner from the left, but it comes to nothing as Japan clear away.
1' KICK OFF
We're underway here at the Arena Pernambuco in Recife.
0' THE BIG MAN IS BACK
Ivory Coast fans will be overjoyed to see Yaya Toure's name on the teamsheet. Let's just hope the big man is fully fit and not risking further injury.
0' LINE-UPS ANNOUNCED
Sabri Lamouchi has sprung a couple of surprises with his line-up, the biggest of which is the omission of Didier Drogba in favour of Wilfried Bony. Didier Zokora stands in for Kolo Toure in central defence, while Serey Die starts in midield. Japan have included both Hotaru Yamaguchi and Makoto Hasebe, with Manchester United's Shinji Kagawa starting as playmaker.
0' KEEPING UP WITH COLOMBIA
A resounding victory for Colombia over Greece earlier means that Group C has an early frontrunner. In terms of the entertainment factor that can only be a good thing, as both of tonight's participants will know they need a win to keep up with the South Americans. Besides, anything less than a brilliant game would be an anomaly by the standards of this brilliantly exciting World Cup.
0' IVORY COAST V JAPAN
The Ivory Coast have been threatening to make a big noise on the world's biggest stage for some years now, but – with their golden generation of players reaching the twilight of their careers – this could be their last chance to deliver. Group C has dealt the African side, who have never previously made it past the group stage, a decent hand, but two losses from three previous meetings with tonight's opponents Japan show that this game will be anything but easy. The Blue Samurai have won their last five matches under the guidance of Italian coach Alberto Zaccheroni, so they should be bubbling with confidence going into this encounter. In fact, with both teams very much attack-minded, we should be in for an entertaining night. Join me, Luke Ostler, with all the action from the Arena Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil.
0' REF WATCH
Chilean referee Enrique Osses is the man to take charge of tonight's encounter. The players had better be on their best behaviour for this one since, in 2005, the experienced official sent off 21 players in just 16 Chilean domestic league games. He should at least be in a good mood following his country's victory over Australia last night.
0' TOURE ON A NATION'S MIND
As with so many of the nations at the World Cup, Ivory Coast's focus in the build-up has been very much on the fitness of a star player. Midfield powerhouse Yaya Toure has been struggling with a thigh injury since the end of the Premier League season, and coach Sabri Lamouchi has admitted that the Manchester City man is not 100% fit going into this game. Such is his influence, that little detail may well not prove a barrier to selection.
0' MENTAL BLOCK
Japan defender Maya Yoshida has admitted to a minor mental issue with this fixture. The Southampton centre back came up against Ivory Coast forward Gervinho, then of Arsenal, in his Premier League debut in 2012, a game that finished an embarrassing 6-1 to the Gunners. Gervinho scored two, with Yoshida at clear fault for one of those strikes, but the 25-year-old, now with added experience under his belt, is determined not to let that happen again.
0' ONE TO WATCH
For the heart and soul of Japan's team, look no further than Keisuke Honda. The AC Milan midfielder oozes class and will damage opponents with his passing if given time and space. That might just be the reason Sabri Lamouchi is willing to risk the not-quite-fit Yaya Toure.
0' IVORY COAST TEAM NEWS
Several members of Ivory Coast's squad are not at full fitness, but there is some good news in the form of Kolo Toure's recovery from malaria. Veteran totem Didier Drogba is likely to edge out stiff competition from Wilfried Bony to start up front.
0' JAPAN TEAM NEWS
Skipper Makoto Hasebe is available after recovering from a knee problem, but could be kept out by in-form Hotaru Yamaguchi, while the defence has been buoyed by the return from injury of Maya Yoshida and Atsuto Uchida.
