Australia vs. Serbia
Minute Commentary
95' NOT ENOUGH
You have got to wonder what Australia could have achieved in this tournament but for red cards in their first two games. What they lack in technique and skill they make up for with sheer drive, determination and perseverance. As for Serbia, in two games - their first and last - they didn't show enough attacking intent or willingness to commit and they have paid the price and they will look back and know it. An entertaining, if frustrating, game ends 2-1 to Australia and Germany and Ghana progress from group D.
94' FULL TIME
The game comes to an end with both these sides out and the score 2-1 to Australia
93' OVER - AND OUT
Pantelic fires over from close range but he is offside again. Surely that spells the end of their bid to snatch progression to the next round?
90' HANG ON A SECOND
Looking at the maths, if Serbia score they pip Ghana to second place in the group on goals scored. Has the message gone out to the side? They only have seconds left to save their World Cup...
89' ALL OVER
No matter how this game ends now, surely neither side will make the last-16. Pride is all there is left to play for.
87' END TO END
It is end-to-end now as Pantelic finds the net again but is flagged offside - why was Zigic preferred from the start?
84' GOOAAAALLLL!!!!
Serbia finally get something and the jabulani ball played it's part - Tosic's shot moving all over the place; Schwarzer spilling the ball and Pantelic following up as two of Antic's subs combine to nick one back.
81' STILL FIGHTING
Australia are surely doomed to bow out of this World Cup here tonight but at least they are still fighting hard. Unlike Serbia who have been toothless this second half.
77' ANTIC STUNNED
Raddy Antic looks on in disbelief but he can't complain too much... his side lacked the intent against Ghana and paid the price and the same is happening here. It's almost like they don't believe in themselves - they are not prepared to get hold of the opposition and pin them down with bad intentions.
75' THE RAMIFICATIONS
With Germany 1-0 up, Australia need goals to get above Ghana... another two to be exact from either themselves or Germany. Never say never...
74' GOOAAAALLLL!!!!
Wow. Australia are two ahead... The defence back off from Holman and he fires a superb shot low into the bottom left hand corner giving Stojkovic no chance. What a turnaround.
71' OUTSIDE CHANCE
Serbia were hit by a sucker punch there and they only have themselves to blame. They have been efficient as opposed to threatening and unless they show some purpose they are sunk.
69' GOOOAALLLL!!!!!
What a header from Tim Cahill who latches on to a Wilkshire cross and has out-jumped Nemanja Vidic to arrow a header into the bottom corner.
68' ZIGIC OFF
Antic took his time on this one... the towering and somewhat lumbering striker is replaced by Marko Pantelic
66' DOUBLE CHANGE
Brett Holman and Scott Chipperfield enter the fray in place of Mark Bresciano and Carl Valeri respectively.
65' GOOD CHANCE
Bresciano draws a great diving effort from Serbia keeper Stojkovic but Cahill can't get on to the rebound. Australia are enjoying their best spell of the game so far.
63' CHANGE
Zigic stays on and somewhat bizarrely it is Krasic who goes of, replaced by Zoran Tosic
62' GOAL...
... but not in this game - Germany have taken the lead against Ghana thanks to Mezut Ozil. The Germans are in pole position now.
60' LOST THEIR WAY
Much as happened with Ghana, Serbia have lost their way against this tough, tight Australia side. A substitution cannot be far away for Raddy Antic and Zigic must be a prime candidate.
57' ANOTHER YELLOW
Ninkovic goes into the ref's book for a studs-up challenge on Wilkshire and while the keeper is worked from the resulting free-kick, Australia need more quality if they are to make a breakthrough.
55' JUST WIDE
Again, Australia fail to deliver at a set-piece but the ball breaks back to Culina who smashes a good shot just wide of the upright from distance. A touch from a team-mate there and that could have been a goal.
53' JUST OVER
Ivanovic was released on the left and put across a good ball for Zigic but the big striker can only fire over having brought the ball down. His days in this game could be numbered.
49' ANOTHER BOOKING
Ninkovic looks a decent little player and he wins his side a free-kick, drawing Wilkshire into the foul when he beat the full-back for pace. The Australian earns a booking for the challenge.
46' FREE-KICK
Australia win an early free-kick for a foul by Vidic on Cahill but Bresciano somewhat wastes the chance, hammering the ball low into the box. The resulting corner comes to nothing. If Australia are going to get anything out of this game they need to do better from these set-pieces.
46' SECOND HALF UNDERWAY
Australia kick off the second half
45' NEED SOMETHING MORE
Australia have dug in and done what is needed to keep a clean sheet and have a go when they can. There's not a lot more this team look capable of. Serbia have it all in their hands... they have had the chances, the possession, the cutting edge but there wasn't enough of it. If they do not score they are unlikely to make it out of this group and they are only giving Australia hope. They need to show attacking application and some commitment. They look too content to be the better side without being the side in front.
45' HALF TIME
The half comes to a close with the score 0-0
44' AUSTRALIA HAPPY
Australia will be happy if this game carries on like this indefinitely. For all their flair and slick passing, Serbia are lacking bite and killer instinct.
42' SERBIA PRESSING
Serbia start to zip the ball around with pace again, trying to break down the two banks of four by using width. The tactic works when they try it - they're just not trying frequently enough.
39' HUSTLE AND BUSTLE
Australia take it straight back up the other end of the pitch and create a half chance that Ivanovic heads out for a corner. It's not always pretty but the Antipodeans are still in this game...
37' JUST OFFSIDE...
Krasic finds the back of the net after a sublime through ball from Stankovic but he mistimed his run and was flagged for being a yard offside.
34' JUST WIDE
Serbia look for width and create a chance as a consequence, Krasic again involved, whipping in a ball from the right and finding the giant Zigic who puts a fairly woeful header wide.
31' STALE, MATE
These two sides are now prodding and poking at each other and it is suiting the Australians who will hope to do this all day and then take their chance when one arrives.
27' ON TOP
Serbia are certainly playing the better football here and are on top - creating the best chances - but without putting too much concerted pressure on the Australia goal. They need to apply themselves better and be bolder in attack.
24' WELL SUPPORTED
Both sides - but especially the Aussies - have some great support in the stadium. Not that you can hear them over the inevitable drone of the Vuvuzelas...
22' STRONG HAND
Good save from Mark Schwarzer who gets out a big strong hand waist high to deny Ivanovic - who really should have done better. Another chance goes begging...
19' GOOD DEFENDING
Beauchamp does not look dazzled by the step-overs of Jovanovic and as the Serbia winger tries to go round him, the Australian defender makes a good, clean challenge winning the ball easily.
18' YELLOW CARD
Lukovic is the first player in the referee's book after an agricultural challenge on Wilkshire
17' EVEN BATTLE
This will be a tense affair throughout it would seem - and the same will be true across the group with Germany v Ghana still goalless.
12' WHAT A CHANCE
Straight from the Australia corner, Krasic is sent clear and manages to get one-on-one with the keeper, but Schwarzer does well to 'stay-big', as they say in goalkeeping parlance, forcing Krasic wide - and he shoots over when he really should have scored.
11' AUSTRALIA CORNER
Carney gets a decent ball in and it is headed behind for a corner. Wilkshire's delivery was not what was needed however and Serbia break.
10' FIGHT
What Australia lack in skill they more than make up for in fight and determination. Serbia might well dominate possession in this game but they will not have an easy time of it.
9' CORNER
Serbia win a second corner and the delivery was better than on the first occasion but Australia deal with it well.
8' SET-PIECES
You feel that Australia's best chances will come from set pieces while Serbia will be dangerous from open play with their pace on the flanks and the big man, Zigic, in the middle.
5' GOOD EFFORT
Krasic again cuts in from the right as Serbia counter attack but rather than going down, he bears down on goal and smashes the ball on target but it is too easy for Schwarzer at his near post. The youngster perhaps should have pulled it back there.
3' GOOD TEMPO
Serbia have some good composed early possession and there is a good tempo to this game already.
1' GET UP
Krasic is no doubt a superb talent and he cut inside from the right and pelted at goal only to fall over as soon as he felt the touch from a defender. Never in a million years a penalty...
1' AND WE'RE OFF
The third and final group game for these sides gets underway...
0' THE ANTHEMS
Both sides have a look of steely determination as the anthems ring out. With all four teams in this group in with a shout of making the last-16, it should be a tense affair. With all both of these sides needing three points, however, this should be fearsome game full of attacking intent.
0' SERBIA TEAM
Raddy Antic has made two changes in defence, ditching Aleksandar Kolarov and Neven Subotic and replacing them with Ivan Obradovic and Aleksandar Lukovic respectively. The team: 1-Vladimir Stojkovic; 6-Branislav Ivanovic, 5-Nemanja Vidic, 13-Aleksandar Lukovic, 17-Milos Krasic, 10-Dejan Stankovic, 16-Ivan Obradovic, 22-Zdravko Kuzmanovic, 18-Milos Ninkovic, 14-Milan Jovanovic, 15-Nikola Zigic
0' AUSTRALIA TEAM
Australia recall Tim Cahill after suspension and he will be asked to support striker Josh Kennedy while Michael Beauchamp comes in for the suspended Craig Moore. The team: 1-Mark Schwarzer; 2-Lucas Neill, 6-Michael Beauchamp, 4-Tim Cahill, 9-Josh Kennedy, 8-Luke Wilkshire, 23-Mark Bresciano, 5-Jason Culina, 16-Carl Valeri, 7-Brett Emerton, 21-David Carney
0' EARLY TEAMS NEWS
Australia duo Harry Kewell and Craig Moore both miss out due to suspension, but Tim Cahill is available again after completing a one-match ban. Cahill is expected to replace Kewell, while Mark Milligan or Michael Beauchamp will come in for Moore at the heart of the Socceroos defence. Serbia defender Alexsander Lukovic is banned and with six players facing suspension if they pick up another yellow card, coach Radomir Antic may be tempted to rest a few of his stars.
0' PREVIEW
Serbia's shock 1-0 win over Germany means they will reach the last 16 if they beat Australia in Nelspruit. The Socceroos had a man sent off in each of their first two matches and have picked up just a single point.
