Mexico vs. Uruguay
Minute Commentary
93' FULL-TIME
It's all over and Uruguay have topped Group A. Mexico's progression to the last-16 also looks all-but assured, with only a late flurry of goals from South Africa able to rob them of a deserved second place. Uruguay were excellent in the first 45, but disappointingly shut up shop and resorted to time wasting to disrupt a much-improved Mexico after the break. Both of these teams have enough to spring a surprise in the latter stages.
90' INJURY TIME
The fourth official shows three minutes of injury time. As it stands, both teams will be going through, with Mexico likely to face Argentina in a terrific second round match-up.
88' PALM-STINGING SHOT
Cavani has a pop from distance and forces the keeper to push the ball behind for a corner. The midfielder has been impressive all game for Uruguay and a goal would be a fitting reward.
86' PETERING OUT
Uruguay's stifling tactics have shut this game down, which is a shame for the neutral, but impressive by the South Americans.
83' WOULD HAVE BEEN IN!
A Mexico attacking move finds Franco in behind the defence. If the striker had controlled well on the turn he would have had only the keeper to beat from close range, but his touch was poor.
80' CAN THEY GET THEIR GOAL?
Mexico have been all over Uruguay for the last 20 minutes and fully deserve a goal. However, the light blue defensive ranks are holding firm and starting to waste time to a ridiculous extent, crashing to the floor from the slightest contact. That's not good to see.
78' YELLOW CARD
Hernandez picks up a yellow for an unintentional stray arm as players bundle in the area ahead of a corner.
76' SUB FOR URUGUAY
Pereira is replaced by Scotti, a sign that Uruguay are content to hold on for 1-0.
75' MEXICO MUCH-IMPROVED
That tactical change in the centre of the park has transformed Mexico. They are now well on top, with Franco and Giovani causing all sorts of problems in the final third. Don't forget that the winner here will avoid the winners of Group B - likely to be Argentina.
72' FRENCH FAVOUR
France have pulled a goal back against South Africa which means that Mexico now have a three-goal cushion even if this score-line remains the same.
69' A BIT TOO CLEVER
Giovani and Franco link up beautifully, but the latter opts to go for another ambitious one-two when the shot would have been a better option.
67' YELLOW CARD
You'll never see a more obvious foul than that. Fucile pulls Giovani back by his shirt before felling the Mexican with a combination of a judo trip and a rugby tackle. It's a fully deserved booking and a disappointing challenge from a player who has been exceptional on the whole.
65' WHAT.A.MISS!!!
Rodriguez has a free header just yards out in the centre of the goal, but provides the miss of the tournament as he slides his header wide of the far post! It's hard to believe that the centre-back has missed that... it's a shocker!
64' STUNNING TACKLE
Giovani is almost set clean through, only to be denied by a stunning sliding challenge by the last defender Fucile.
62' MEXICAN CHANGE
Blanco's been lagging for some time and it is no surprise to see the 37-year-old replaced by Hernandez.
60' HARSH CALL
Salcido looks to have been pulled down outside the box, but the referee gives nothing. If it was a dive then the Mexican should have been booked.
57' MEXICO CHANGE
Javier Aguirre moves quickly to attempt to nullify the threat of Forlan, bringing on Castro for Moreno.
56' A SECOND LOOKS LIKELY
Mexico are getting caught on the break time and time again and you wouldn't bet against Uruguay extending their lead at this rate.
54' HUGE SAVE BY PEREZ
The Mexico keeper denies Lugano's powerful header with a diving stop. The ball ricochets out into the area, but the defenders are alive to the danger and close down any blue shirt in space to snuff out the chance.
52' SLIP AT THE VITAL MOMENT
Another sumptuous back-heel by Franco sends Giovani sprinting clear, but the youngster slips just as he is about to pick out Blanco in the box and can't get his cross past the first defender.
50' LOVELY BUILD-UP
Blanco is picked out with a delightful back-heel, but his cross can only find a blue shirt.
48' REAL DANGER ON THE BREAK
Mexico know that they need a goal to start feeling safe again, but are susceptible to getting caught on the break, with Suarez a real threat with his pace.
46' SECOND HALF
The game at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium is back underway, and Mexico have made a change, replacing Guardado with Barrera.
45' HALF TIME
A day that looked like a walk in the park for both of these teams has turned interesting over the first 45 minutes. The goal for Uruguay just before the break leaves Mexico in a perilous position, level on points with South Africa - with the hosts 2-0 up in the other game and on the hunt for a thrashing.
44' MORE ON THAT GOAL
Cavani's excellent cross to the back stick found Suarez, and the striker showed his class, placing his header low and into the corner to make it 1-0.
43' GOOAAALLL!!!
Suarez puts Uruguay in front, and suddenly things aren't looking quite so straight-forward for Mexico.
41' HONOURS EVEN?
Both teams have shown glimpses of quality in the final third, and as it stands a draw would probably be the fair result. However, there's plenty of time for this group to get interesting!
38' IT'S GETTING NERVY
South Africa are two up against ten-man France and suddenly a defeat here is starting to look like it could send the team crashing out. The tempo has upped in the last few minutes as the message comes through from Bloemfontein.
36' PEREZ IS BACK
The defender is back on with a fetching blue bandage wrapped around his head, ala Terry Butcher.
34' NASTY BLOW
Perez is caught in the face accidentally as he goes up for a header and gets a nasty knock. He'll have to go off to get that patched up and have a change of shirt.
31' AWFUL DELIVERY
Pereira's cross into the box is wildly over-hit and goes straight behind for a goal-kick.
29' DRAMA IN THE OTHER GAME
There's a sending off in the other game, and France are down to ten men, Gourcuff's flailing elbow earns him a red. South Africa will be dreaming of a stunning turn-around in their final game, and the onus is on these teams to prevent that from happening.
27' A TAD SPECULATIVE
Cavani shoots from distance, but drags his shot well wide, and in all honesty that was a tad too ambitious.
25' AROUND THE GROUNDS
South Africa have taken the lead against France, putting pressure on these two teams to avoid a heavy defeat.
22' STUNNING STRIKE!
Guardado unleashes a beauty that beats the keeper all ends up, but smashes off the under-side of the bar and away to safety. That would have been goal of the tournament had it gone in, sensational stuff!
20' THAT'S WILD
Cavani bursts into the box and goes for a shot from a tight angle when he could have played in Forlan. The striker is furious!
18' A REAL WASTE
Victorino has a clear header inside the Mexico box, but fails to keep his diving effort down and watches as it sails over the bar.
16' VERY SIMILAR SIDES
These two teams both have a very similar style, keeping the ball well in a classy midfield line-up and using a mix of pace and experience up-front to unlock the opposition defence.
13' TOO SLOW TO REACT
Franco is picked out by Blanco, but waits for the ball to sit when he should have taken it first time, allowing the keeper to close down the space and run the ball out of play.
11' WORTH A GO
Options are limited for Suarez, so the Ajax man opts for an audacious chip... but the keeper is alert to it and claims comfortably.
8' THREAT OUT WIDE
Wing-back Salcido has been a major attacking weapon for Mexico down their left in the previous two games, and has continued where he left off, taking the game to Uruguay with pace and power down the flank.
7' NO PENALTY
Blanco goes down in the box, but it was only a slight touch and the ref waves away the penalty claims. The veteran would have been better off concentrating on getting onto Giovani's excellent cross.
6' SHOULD HAVE BEEN 1-0
Suarez's pace catches Marquez out and the striker is in on the keeper. It is at an angle, but he slides his shot wide of the far post. He should have at least made the keeper work, and that's a waste!
4' TEPID START
Neither team have really got a foothold in the game so far and it's all a bit stagnant.
1' KICK-OFF
Mexico get the game underway.
0' THE ANTHEMS
The Royal Bafokeng Stadium is packed to the rafters, and it's predominantly Mexican supporters who are making the noise. Both sets of fans belt out the anthems and now on to the important stuff.
0' HERE COME THE PLAYERS
The teams emerge in the now familiar World Cup routine, following on behind the flags and past the match ball.
0' TEAM LINE-UPS
Uruguay have made just one change from the demolition of the hosts, bringing in Victorino for Godin. Mexico have been forced to make changes, calling on veteran Blanco for his first start of the tournament in place of the injured Vela, while Guardado replaces the suspended Juarez.
0' CRUNCH TIME FOR GROUP A
It's the business end of the group stages and these two teams are in the driving seat to progress from Group A. They'll be keeping half an eye on the France v South Africa match as there could be a shock with one of those two nipping second place, but justice would be both of these teams reaching the last-16.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Vela is out with a hamstring injury for Mexico and is expected to be replaced by Hernandez, while Aguilar is the favourite to come in for suspended Juarez. Uruguay are likely to name the same side that hammered South Africa 3-0 in the last game.
0' PREVIEW
A draw would see both of these teams through to the last 16, but a win would guarantee first place in the group - avoiding a second round tie against Argentina - so expect both to go in search of three points. A heavy defeat for either side could leave the door open for South Africa or France to pip them to second place, but these have been the best two teams in the group and it will be a fair conclusion if both progress.
