Spain vs. Honduras
Minute Commentary
92' FULL-TIME
The whistle goes to bring an end to a comfortable 2-0 win for Spain over Honduras. The Spanish were on song after their opening game disappointment, but may regret not racking up the goal difference to give them the edge in the final round of matches.
89' SHORT OF THEIR BEST
Spain have played some sumptuous football, but really should have recorded a much bigger win given the chances they've created here, and will need to become far more clinical if they progress to the latter stages.
87' DENIED THE HAT-TRICK
Mendoza gets his own back on Villa after a torturous evening, sliding in to block the striker's goal-bound shot after another lightning Spanish break.
85' HONDURAS CHANGE
Jerry Palacios - one of three Palacios brothers in the squad - replaces Suazo for Honduras.
83' NOT AT THAT RATE!
Honduras give away a free-kick for pushing in the box. That's a waste of a rare opportunity to test the Spain defence.
82' ANY CHANCE OF A COMEBACK?
Honduras pile forward and win a corner. A goal here would make things extremely interesting for the last few minutes.
80' THE PACE HAS SLOWED
With Spain comfortable at 2-0 and fragmented after the changes, this game is beginning to peter out.
77' A FINAL CHANGE
The impressive Ramos makes way, replaced by Arbeloa at right-back.
76' GOAL DIFFERENCE MATTERS
Chile are leading this group on six points, but with Switzerland to play Honduras in their final game and the Spanish facing the South Americans in theirs, it is distinctly possible that the three teams will all finish on six points - bringing goal difference into play.
74' SPAIN A THREAT ON THE BREAK
Navas just over-hits his cross with Villa unmarked in the box. Honduras are getting carved open on the break.
71' ANOTHER SPANISH CHANGE
Torres is given the rest that he looks like he needs, and is replaced by Mata. Villa will now play through the middle, with his former Valencia team-mate going out on the left.
70' OVER THE BAR
Nunez takes a free-kick within shooting range, but can't keep his effort down.
68' TIMELY INTERVENTION
Ramos catches a volley cleanly on the edge of the box, but sees it deflected and loop tamely into the keeper's arms. The full-back clearly thought that was going in.
67' ALMOST THE PERFECT START
Fabregas rounds the keeper with his first touch and shoots with his second, only to see it cleared off the line by a sprawling Chavez.
66' CHANGE FOR SPAIN
Fabregas comes on to replace Xavi.
65' WHY DID HE SHOOT?!
Suazo had plenty of team-mates in space around the Spain box, but went for a shot from distance and sent it wide. That could have made it interesting!
61' HE'S PUT IT WIDE!
Villa steps up with the chance to grab a World Cup hat-trick, sends the keeper the wrong way... and promptly slots his spot-kick wide of the post. There's an almost incredulous silence around Ellis Park - you'd have put serious money on the striker bagging a third there.
59' PENALTY TO SPAIN
Navas is too quick on the turn for Izaguirre, and the defender can only bring his man down to give away a penalty.
57' THREAT ON THE BREAK
Martinez has put in an attacking performance to match his flamboyant hair. Given a roaming role in behind Suazo, he has caused Spain all sorts of problems on the break and would be a likely source if they were to find a goal against the European Champions.
55' WALKING WOUNDED
Pique is caught in the face by a stray boot and is off on the side of the pitch with blood streaming from his face. It's a nasty-looking knock, but nothing that should prevent him from carrying on here.
53' INCHES WIDE
Ramos has been given a much more attacking role since the break, and finds space to fizz in a quality shot that flies fractionally wide of the post.
51' MORE ON THAT GOAL
It was a sensational break by Spain. Xavi ran most of the length of the pitch before slipping in Navas down the right. The wide-man picked out Villa on the edge of the area, whose shot deflected off Chavez and looped over the helpless keeper. 2-0 and - in all likelihood - game over.
50' GOOAAALLL!!!
Villa bags a second to make it 2-0 to Spain.
48' DANGER SIGNS
As Honduras push forward in search for an equaliser they are leaving themselves open to Spain on the counter-attack, which is a very dangerous thing to do.
47' CHANGE FOR HONDURAS
Welcome has come on for Espinoza as Honduras go on the offensive.
46' SECOND HALF
The second 45 is underway at Ellis Park.
45' SECOND HALF
The whistle goes as Honduras press forward, and it's a timely reminder to Spain that there are still 45 minutes left for the Central Americans to spring a huge surprise. Vincent del Bosque's side have been all over this game, but have just the one goal to show for their efforts and will hope to emulate Portugal's second half surge of earlier today to put the game to bed after the break.
44' HONDURAS BREAK
White shirts break in numbers and almost catch Spain asleep at the back through the dangerous combination of Suazo and Martinez. With just a one-goal cushion there is always the chance of a sucker-punch from Honduras.
42' CLASSY INTERPLAY
Torres turns it on, jinking into space and going for a one-two with Villa that very nearly puts him into space in the box. The crowd ooh and aah, but the defender read the final ball well.
41' VILLA'S A LUCKY, LUCKY BOY
Villa has his foot stamped on at a corner in a blatant attempt to provoke a reaction, but falls for it completely and raises his hands to an opponent's face. If the ref had seen that then the goal-scorer would have had to have walked.
39' LAST-DITCH DEFENDING
Busquets finds Navas with a delightful ball, and the winger almost picks out Villa with the cross - only to be denied by the last defender Chavez.
37' YELLOW CARD
Izaguirre is booked for a nasty challenge from behind on Navas. He can have no complaints over that decision.
35' DENIED BY THE FLAG
Torres looks to have burst clean through on the keeper to make amends for his earlier misses, but the linesman denies the striker with a raised flag. It isn't the right decision, the left-back is playing him onside.
33' THEY'RE DUCKING IN ROW Z
Torres jinks inside and carves out the sort of shooting opportunity that would normally result in the net bulging, but the striker uncharacteristically balloons his shot miles over the bar.
32' TORRES GOES CLOSE
Ramos curls over a beautiful cross, but Torres' header is straight into the ground and bounces over the bar. The Liverpool striker just hasn't been at it in the opening stages and looks far from fully fit.
29' POSSESSION FOOTBALL
Spain are in complete control of possession and territory, but despite looking the likelier side to score again, do look vulnerable on the break - particularly when Martinez and Suazo get on the ball in front of the shaky Puyol.
25' DON'T RAISE THE HANDS!
Palacios has clearly not learned the lessons of Behrami's dismissal this afternoon, and catches Busquets with a swinging arm. Thankfully for the midfielder, this ref is more lenient and gives just a free-kick for the unintentional infringement.
23' ALMOST A SECOND!
Spain work another chance on the left and whip in a dangerous ball. It falls to Navas on the far side of the area, but the winger opts to control rather than shoot first time. It looks like the chance has gone begging, but the Sevilla man instead whips in a beautiful cross that almost finds Xavi unmarked five yards out. If it had been anybody other than the smallest player on the pitch then that would have been 2-0.
20' MENDOZA'S NIGHTMARE
The Honduras right-back is in for a torrid evening in Johannesburg on the evidence of the opening 20 minutes. He is turned inside-out again by Villa and can only hack down the new big-money Barcelona signing. Mendoza needs help from his midfielders... and quickly!
18' MORE ON THAT GOAL!
Villa has been scintillating out on that left flank for Spain, and did brilliantly to beat four Honduras defenders on a slaloming run in from the touchline before curling a shot into the top corner, via the fingertips of the goalkeeper. It's a wonderful, wonderful goal, and a fitting way for Spain to open their World Cup account.
17' GOOAAALLL!!!
Villa opens the scoring for Spain with an absolutely magnificent strike.
16' WONDERFUL LINK-UP
Martinez's dinked pass very nearly picks out Suazo, but Casillas is alive to the danger and just reaches the ball before the striker.
14' CALAMITY CASILLAS?
Honduras launch a break through Palacios, and Mendoza whips in a cross. It should be dealt with comfortably by the Spanish captain, but he inexplicably kicks clear through a body of players and is lucky to see the ball fall away from a white shirt.
13' TOO HOT TO HANDLE
Villa is all over the Honduras right-back Mendoza, and skins him again to work room for a shot inside the area. His run may have been top drawer, but his shot was far from it and flew well wide.
10' AND THAT'S A BAD MISS...
Pique and Ramos are both left unmarked from a Xavi free-kick towards the back post. The former should have got to it, but mistimed his jump, and the latter couldn't keep his header down from just yards out.
9' COULD HAVE BEEN A PENALTY
Ramos goes down in the area amidst Spanish claims for a penalty. The ref gives nothing, but replays suggest that there was a foul on the full-back. If Italy got a spot-kick for the 'foul' on De Rossi yesterday, then that should have been given.
7' YELLOW CARD
Turcios is booked for knocking the ball away after fouling Navas in a dangerous area of the field.
6' OFF THE BAR!
Villa is given space a long way out and pings in a beauty of a shot. It beats Valladares all ends up, but doesn't quite dip early enough and cannons back off the bar. What an effort though, stunning strike!
4' WHAT IS HE DOING?!
Martinez tries a fancy juggle as he attempts to clear the danger near his own corner flag, but mucks it up and almost presents Spain with a clear sight of goal inside the opening five minutes. Quite what he was thinking there is anybody's guess!
3' TOO CLOSE TO THE KEEPER
Navas' cross is too close to the keeper and Valladares claims with ease.
2' EARLY ERROR
Suazo controls the ball on the edge of the box, but handled in the process and the referee - Yuichi Nishimura from Japan - is quick to spot the infringement.
1' KICK-OFF
Spain get the ball rolling in a game that they are huge favourites to win. Can Honduras spring a massive surprise? We'll know in roughly two hours.
0' THE ANTHEMS
The two teams belt out their respective anthems and both look totally fired up. Defeat for either side here would leave their World Cup fate in serious jeopardy going into the final round of games. For Honduras that would be a disappointment... but for Spain it would be one of the greatest World Cup underachievements of all-time.
0' THE TEAMS EMERGE
The intimidating Ellis Park is packed to the rafters for this game, and the capacity crowd welcome the teams onto the field with a cacophony of noise, only heightened by the sizeable vuvuzela orchestra in attendance.
0' SURPRISE SELECTION
Vicente del Bosque has surprisingly kept both Alonso and Busquets at the heart of the Spanish midfield, meaning no place for Fabregas. Fernando Torres does come back in, replacing the injured Iniesta, while the lively Navas replaces Silva on the right. Honduras stick with the same shape from their opening game, but do welcome back fit-again star striker David Suazo.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Fernando Torres is likely start up front alongside David Villa, while Cesc Fabregas could also replace the injured Andres Iniesta. Honduras are keeping their cards close to their chest over team selection, but could pack an already defensive side with another holding midfielder in an attempt to shut down the Spanish.
0' PREVIEW
Euro 2008 champions and favourites for the title prior to the tournament, Spain slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat by Switzerland in their opening game and will be looking to make amends against Honduras. The Central American side did well to limit Chile to just one goal in defeat in their first game, but will need to improve significantly if they are to get a result against one of the most creative teams in world football.
