At just 18 years old, Shiffrin is the baby of the U.S. ski team, but she just might be the Americans’ best shot at gold in Sochi when she makes her Olympic debut. She already has a world title to her name, winning gold in the slalom at the 2013 world championships at the age of 17, and she proceeded to back that up by capturing the discipline’s World Cup season title - finishing fifth in the overall standings right behind Olympic teammate Julia Mancuso. So far this season, she’s proving that success was no fluke. Shiffrin leads the slalom standings once again and is in the top 10 in overall World Cup points for 2014. After winning four World Cup slalom races a year ago, she’s already topped three podiums in 2014 while adding the first second-place finish of her career in giant slalom to further establish herself in both technical events. With seven victories and 14 podiums in a very brief career, Shiffrin seems poised to take the reigns as the United States' next elite female Alpine racer.
