Sigfridsson is making her Olympic debut, and the expectations couldn't be loftier since Sweden has won the last two Olympic golds under retired skip Anette Norberg. Sigfridsson, though, has been a force on the international stage since winning silver at the 1997 world junior championships. She's reached the podium in eight of nine international tournaments. However, winning a medal in Sochi may require beating rival Eve Muirhead and Britain. Sigfridsson and Muirhead have competed for various championships, including two in 2013. Sigfridsson won the European championships with a 10-5 victory over Muirhead’s Scotland team after falling 6-5 in the finale at worlds. They locked horns in two other European championships, with Sigfridsson winning in 2010 before losing to Muirhead a year later. One of her most devastating defeats came in the gold-medal match at the 2012 world championships, losing 7-6 to Switzerland after skip Mirjam Ott converted a two-point final end. Like Muirhead, Sigfridsson will have to contend with Ott in Sochi. Sigfridsson is a strong candidate to lead Sweden to a fourth medal in five Olympics, but anything short of gold could be seen as a disappointment.
