Though she won't be one of the favorites in Sochi, Meyer will have some momentum after winning her first career World Cup gold medal Jan. 26. She overcame heavy favorite and eventual overall winner Kaillie Humphries of Canada in the second run. That race also doubled as the women's European Championship, earning Meyer and brakeman Tanja Mayer a gold medal. The pair struggled at the start of this World Cup season, finishing 12th, ninth, 11th and 10th in the first four races before placing third in St. Moritz on Jan. 11. This will be the second Olympics for Meyer, who finished a disappointing 10th in 2010. Her best finish in the world championships was sixth in 2012 and she placed ninth in 2013. She is familiar with the track in Sochi, finishing fifth there in February 2013.
