Career Highlights:

Skobrev will turn 31 at the start of the Winter Games in his home nation, and it's understandable if he believes he's getting better with age. With a solid World Cup season under his belt _ three top 3 finishes during a stretch of three straight races _ Skobrev is confident heading into his third Olympics. He certainly has reason to be excited after winning silver in the 10,000 meters in a time of 13:02.07, bronze in the 5,000 (6:18.05) and placing fourth in the 1,500 (1:46.42) at Vancouver four years ago. All three of Skobrev's times in those events were an improvement on his performance at the 2006 Turin Games. Since his success in Vancouver, Skobrev set personal-bests in the 500 (35.90 seconds), the 1,500 (1:42.94) and the 10,000 (12:58.36) in 2011 alone. However, the 2011 European and world all-around champion still has to contend with Dutch long-distance star and gold-medal favorite Sven Kramer in the 5,000 and 10,000 in Sochi. Skobrev certainly has the ability to reach the podium again in both, as well as the 1,500. He finished third in both the 1,500 and 5,000 at the 2013 world single-distance championships on the same Sochi oval he'll skate on at the Olympics. Yet he'll be hoping for a better effort in the 10,000 after not placing in the event during that competition. His mother, Ivana, was a former speedskater for the Soviet Union. One of his country's most popular and well-respected athletes, Skobrev was named an ambassador for the 2014 Winter Games.
