Martini is back for her second Olympics hoping to erase the painful memory of 2010. A heavy favorite to win gold in Vancouver, Martini was disqualified after a spectacular crash on her final run ejected brakeman Remy Logsch. Although both Logsch and Martini were able to walk off the track under their own power, it was a bitter finish for Martini, who had won five gold medals that season. She has been competing in the sport since 2000, finishing second in the World Cup overall standings four times. Also on her resume is a third-place finish in the 2012-13 World Cup and four medals - two silvers and two bronze - in the world championships. Like many German bobsledders, Martini competed in luge from 1992-2000 before switching sports. She works as an officer in Germany's federal border police force. Her former teammate and best friend Yvonne Cernota died after her sled catapulted off course during a training session in Germany in March 2004. Cernota had served as Martini's brakeman a month earlier at the 2004 worlds on the same course.
