Winter Games Athletes |
Holland is no stranger to riding on snowboarding's biggest stage, but he’s had to overcome some recent ailments in order to reach his third Winter Games. Just a few weeks after sustaining a collarbone injury during training that required surgery, Holland appeared to be in Olympic form when he captured his seventh X Games gold medal in late January. Holland, who became a regular on the slopes at the age of eight, began his run of gold medals in snowboardcross as a 28-year-old at the 2006 X Games. That year, he would place 14th at Turin in his Olympic debut. Holland hoped to make the most of a second chance in 2010, but fell just shy of a medal when he finished fourth in Vancouver. Now the elite veteran is heading to Russia as a contender once again, though nothing short of a medal will do this time. He is looking to become only the second rider to win gold in the event, as American Seth Wescott won’t be there to defend his back-to-back victories - a string which began with the sport's inaugural appearance on the Olympic program in 2006.
