Winter Games Athletes
Szabados' talents not only helped Team Canada capture the gold medal at the 2010 Olympics, but they've also led to her competing in men's leagues during her career. The goaltender shut out the United States in the finale of the Vancouver Games, helping Canada win its third straight gold. That type of success has been common for Szabados, who began playing in boys' leagues at the age of 15. When she was 16, Szabados became the first female to play in the Western Hockey League and participated in four exhibition games. She then was named the top goaltender of the all-male Alberta Junior Hockey League after her stint in the WHL. Szabados made her debut for Team Canada in 2006 before playing collegiately at Grant MacEwan University in Alberta. Her time in the WHL made her ineligible to play in the NCAA.
