Winthrop names Kevin Cook women's basketball coach

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) Winthrop has named assistant coach Kevin Cook to replace women's basketball coach Marlene Stollings, who left this week for the same position at VCU.

Cook spent the past year on Stollings staff. He was on the staff of the WNBA's Houston Comets during a run when the team won four league championships and made the playoffs nine of 10 seasons.

He has also been an assistant at Kansas from 1983-93 and associate head coach at the University of Houston from 1995-97. Cook spent the past four seasons as head coach at Gallaudet University.

Winthrop athletic director Tom Hickman was glad to have someone with Cook's experience and talent already on staff.
