Career Highlights: Bootsma became a surprise qualifier for her first Olympics by finishing second in the 100 backstroke at the U.S. trials last month. She placed behind Missy Franklin but ahead of two-time gold medalist Natalie Coughlin to earn a spot on the team. Though it may be a surprise to some she'll be representing the United States in the event, Bootsma seems prepared. She finished second in the 100 back at the 2011 nationals and third the previous year as a 16-year-old. Bootsma is scheduled to attend the University of California for the next swimming season.
