  • Career Highlights: Prendes will make his Olympic debut in London after qualifying with Nick LeCava, Anthony Fahden and Will Newell at the final Olympic qualification regatta in May. The crew finished ahead of the Netherlands by 0.14 seconds after being in third place at the 500-meter mark. Prendes, who was born in Matanzas, Cuba, and went to high school in Miami, graduated from Princeton in 2011. He helped the Tigers win championships at the Eastern Sprints and Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championships as a sophomore and junior. After a difficult end to his college career - Princeton finished fourth at the Eastern Sprints and fifth at the IRA - Prendes was honored with the university’s most prestigious male student-athlete award, the Williams Winston Roper Trophy. He began competing in the sport in 2001 with the American Barge Club; a decade later, he finished 13th at the 2011 world championships after taking third in the lightweight four the previous year at the U-23 championships.
