Career Highlights: Newlin, a native of Riverton, Wyo., will participate in his second Olympics this summer as part of the eights crew that punched its ticket to London by winning at the final Olympic qualification regatta in Switzerland in May. The 30-year-old helped the Americans finish fourth in the four at the 2011 world championships. Newlin was part of the U.S. team that took ninth in the four at the Beijing Games. Giuseppe Lanzone and David Banks - now part of the eights crew that qualified for London - joined Newlin on that boat four years ago. Newlin, a former teammate of Lanzone at Washington, transferred there from Michigan State after that university did not offer an intercollegiate rowing program. Newlin helped the Huskies finish second in the varsity eights at the 2003 and ’04 IRA Championships. US Rowing’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2006, Newlin took sixth in the eight at the 2010 world championships and fourth in that event in 2007. He was part of the crew that finished fourth in the four at the 2009 world championships after taking fourth in 2006. Newlin won silver at the 2005 world championships in the four with coxswain.
