Career Highlights: American middle distance runner Bridget Franek will be competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Olympics. A U.S. junior silver medalist in 2006, she won bronze in the NCAA outdoor championships in 2008 before going two better in 2010 by winning the title. An outdoor bronze medalist while still at the college level, Franek was runner-up in the national championships in both 2011 and 2012. Second in the U.S. Olympic trials to Emma Coburn, Franek only has an outside chance of a medal in London. Kenya’s Milcah Chemos Cheywa and the Ethiopian pair of Sofia Assefa and Hiwot Ayalew are the standout favorites for the three podium positions, having posted nine of the 11 fastest times in the world this year.
