Career Highlights: Emma Coburn represents America’s strongest chance at a medal in the steeplechase in London. The NCAA outdoor champion in 2011, Coburn also picked up gold in the USA outdoor championships that year before competing at the World Athletics Championships, finishing 13th in the steeplechase final. The junior national record holder, Coburn will still be in college when she competes in London. Having defended her title at the USA Outdoors in 2012, she won the Olympic trials to seal her place at the Games alongside college teammate Shalaya Kipp and the silver medalist from the last two national championships, Bridget Franek. The American trio will be hard pressed to reach the podium in London. Kenya’s Milcah Chemos Cheywa and the Ethiopian pair of Sofia Assefa and Hiwot Ayalew are the standout favorites for the three podium positions, having posted nine of the 11 fastest times in the world this year.
