Career Highlights: Inspired by his older brother's experience in the triple jump, Silnov ventured into high-jump competition and quickly became a star. He won the Russian under-23 indoor title in 2005 and was asked to join an elite group of Russian jumpers training under coach Yevgeniy Zagorulko. He won gold in the 2006 European championships with a record jump of 2.36M, the same height he cleared for his gold-medal winning jump at the 2008 Olympics. Silnov's post-Beijing career got off to a rocky start when he suffered an Achilles' injury that sidelined him for nearly a year, but he returned to competition in early 2010. He won silver in the 2012 World Indoors in Istanbul, and should have a good chance to defend his Olympic title in London.
