  • Career Highlights: Sania Mirza is the best Indian tennis player in the international women’s arena. She played her first event in the ITF Circuit in 2001, and has won three career singles titles and one doubles title at the same circuit. She turned pro in 2003 and since then has been a regular on the tour. She achieved a career high singles ranking of 30 and is among the Top 10 in doubles. She is the third Indian woman to feature in a Grand Slam though her only singles title came in Hyderabad. She was also part of the Indian Olympic tennis team in 2008. Her only Grand Slam win was the 2009 Australian Open mixed doubles title with Mahesh Bhupathi. A career-threatening injury forced her out of action for a few months affecting her game and leading to her fall in the singles rankings. She considers Steffi Graf to be her idol. In 2004, she received the Rajiv Gandhi Award from the Indian Government; and in 2006, was awarded the Padma Shri for her contribution and achievement in tennis.
