  • Career Highlights: Gurmeet Singh is an Indian athlete from a small village in Uttarakhand who competes in the 20km race walk event. He was inspired by his cousin Sukhbir Singh, who is also an athlete, to take up the sport. His first medal came at the age of 15 when he won the silver medal on his debut appearance at the Junior Nationals in 2000. His first international success came at the Junior Asian Championships in Brunei where he finished fifth. At the 2008 Federation Cup, he clinched the gold medal. He followed this up with another gold at the 2009 National Games. Singh secured his place for the 2012 London Olympics at the 18th Dublin International Grand Prix of Race Walking. He clocked 1:22:07 to better the London Games qualifying ‘A’ standard of 1:22:30. He has been training at the Sports Authority of India Centre at Bangalore in preparation for the Olympics.
