Career Highlights: Considered one of the world’s best time trial racers, Martin hopes he remains healthy enough to compete in the Summer Games. One of the favorites to claim Olympic gold this summer, Martin broke his jaw and cheekbone after he collided with a car during an April training run near his home in Switzerland. “The lights went out," said Martin, who was unconscious for about 15 minutes and cannot remember the accident. The injuries, however, did not stop the German from hopping back on the bike in early May. Martin gained prominence in 2011 when he beat heavily favored Swiss star Fabian Cancellara to win his first world championship in the time trial event. The victory came after Martin finished third _ behind Cancellara _ in each of the previous world championship races. Martin, who won the 20th stage of the 2011 Tour de France, won 12 races in 2011. Though his style of racing is a perfect fit to contend for a Tour de France title, Martin has his sights set on winning gold in his Olympic debut this summer. Born in communist East Germany, Martin and his family escaped prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
