Career Highlights: Bantamweight Luke Campbell is a contender for boxing gold in his weight-class. Born in Hull in the north-east of England, Campbell won the English amateur title in 2007 and retained his crown in 2008. After missing out on qualification for the Team GB squad for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, he resisted offers to turn professional in favour of working towards Olympic gold in his country’s home Games in 2012. The 2008 European Amateur title at the championships in Liverpool proved a huge step forward, and - after sitting out the 2009 season as he recovered from injury - he won the 2010 Four Nations Challenge title. The highlight of Campbell’s career to-date came in 2011 as he reached the final of the World Amateur Championships, missing out on gold to Cuba’s Lazaro Alvarez. His world medal puts the youngster amongst the leading contenders for bantamweight gold in his nation’s home Games. World number one and two Yankiel Leon and Detelin Dalakliev will be the favourites to reach the final in London, but Campbell has beaten Dalakliev and will fancy his chances of at least claiming a medal.
