  • Career Highlights: Born in Serbia to mother Radmila, a Serb, and Branko, a Croat and former Yugoslavian national team goalkeeper, Karabatic has become one of the world’s most powerful and dynamic players. Karabatic, who moved to France in 1988 when his father accepted a job as a coach, led France to its first handball Olympic gold medal in 2008 by scoring eight goals in a 28-23 victory over Iceland in the final. The 27-year-old left back has not slowed down since Beijing, helping his country win the 2010 European championships and the 2009 and ’11 world championships. He was named MVP in the ’11 tournament in Sweden - France’s fourth title at the championships - after scoring a team-best 10 times in the 37-35 overtime victory over Denmark that secured France’s spot in the 2012 London Games. Karabatic, the 2007 International Handball Federation world player of the year, has scored 703 goals in 165 national team matches since 2002. He spent 2005-09 with the German club team THW Kiel, winning three German championships as well as the 2007 EHF Champions League. Since then, he has been with the French club Montpellier HB, teaming with his younger brother Luka, a former tennis player who is also on the French national handball team. Their father Branko, who passed away May 11, 2011, was a former goalkeeper coach on Montpellier HB.
