Karsten-Khodotovich, who started rowing when she was 15, made her Olympic debut for the Unified Team in 1992, earning a bronze medal in the quadruple sculls. In 1996, she won Belarus’ first-ever Olympic gold medal when she finished first in the single sculls. She repeated in 2000 when a photo finish against Bulgaria’s Rumyana Neykova was ruled in her favor. Karsten-Khodotovich, the 2006 World Rowing female rower of the year, is a six-time world champion in single sculls and a three-time runner-up. She was edged out by the Czech Republic’s Mirka Knapkova by four-hundredths of a second last year. Karsten-Khodotovich, a married mother of one, nearly quit the sport after her daughter’s birth in 1998.
