Burned out from competition, Hammer put her bike away for two years until she was inspired to return after watching former teammates take part in the 2004 Summer Games. Since her return, Hammer won UCI world championships in 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011 while competing in the individual pursuit, team pursuit and omnium. In 2006, she broke an 11-year-old national record when she won the individual pursuit in 3:32.865. With a world title in 2007, Hammer became the first American woman to post consecutive titles in 20 years. The next year, Hammer made her Olympic debut, ending up fifth in the individual pursuit but not finishing the points race. She won bronze in the omnium at the 2012 world championships. Her overall effort in the six-race event was highlighted with a second-place finish in individual pursuit. She is married to U.S. Olympic track cycling coach Andy Sparks.
