She broke into the U.S. team at 17 and has been a fixture in the midfield as one of its offensive leaders. Despite her age, she was an important part of the team that went on to win the gold medal at the Athens Games, scoring the winning goal against Germany in the semifinals. O'Reilly continued her strong play for the U.S. at the 2007 World Cup, netting her second goal of the tournament in a 4-1 win over Norway in the third-place match. She added two more goals at the 2008 Olympics, helping the U.S. to the gold medal. O'Reilly's impressive work rate and speed were important to the U.S. reaching the final of last summer's World Cup, but the team fell on penalties to Japan. She scored a goal in a 3-0 win over Colombia in the group stage and added four more in CONCACAF qualifying for the London Games earlier this year. She had a hat trick in a 14-0 romp of the Dominican Republic as the U.S. eased through qualifying, winning all five games by outscoring opponents 38-0.
